jedimastert··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
> no small number of users choose Apple because they do not trust Google

Unfortunately, it probably actually is a small number comparatively. Or at least I would need to see some sort of real data to say anything different.

I feel like people who distrust Google probably wouldn't trust Apple enough to give them their data either? Why would you distrust one but not the other?

jedimastert··on Show HN: Terminal UI for AWS
That was my first thought too, it looks like it was directly inspired by k9s according to the bottom of the readme.
jedimastert··on Show HN: Terminal UI for AWS
It looks like the first commit was just a squash and merge, I probably would never trust a public commit history as some kind of source of truth anyways. I'm curious what your issue is?
jedimastert··on Exe.dev
The exact text on mobile is

> ssh exe.dev

> The disk persists. You have sudo.

I've seen enough of these kinds of services in my lifetime that I also immediately knew what it was, for example sdf.org, which is one of the OG services, and various "tilde" services like tilde.town.

jedimastert··on Deliberate Internet Shutdowns
That particular section I have to Wikipedia article seems to have gone through a bunch of anonymous edits back and forth around the content of this citation

jedimastert··on Deliberate Internet Shutdowns
> Starlink-style connectivity

Note that one of the higher-profile deliberate internet shutdowns was Starlink itself shutting down internet connectivity in Ukraine.

jedimastert··on Atomic time source failure at NIST Gaithersburg campus
> I am astonished that NIST does not have multiple clocks over multiple distributed sites with robust ability to detect and bypass individual failures.

Is this sarcasm? I can't tell.

Per the email:

> Servers at the Boulder and WWV/Ft. Collins campuses are independent and unaffected.

jedimastert··on The Free Software Foundation Europe deleted its account on X
Can you find me some notable examples?
jedimastert··on The Free Software Foundation Europe deleted its account on X
I don't think twitter allows someone to take over an account after it's been deleted
jedimastert··on How to Synthesize a House Loop
I think the creator of the video you've linked has had a couple videos go viral, which may be part of it
jedimastert··on Advent of Code 2025
The inputs are part of the validation that you did the question, so they're kind of a secret.
jedimastert··on Show HN: Explore what the browser exposes about you
I'm unaware of how other platforms work, but for Google you can just see what buckets have been associated with your account:

https://myadcenter.google.com/controls

I'm not sure how that would work from an ad-buying perspective, from what I understand you essentially choose which buckets you'd like to show ads to? Like I don't think ad-buyers get the whole dossier for the person they're showing ads to, the platform just decides "from what you've told us, this person seems likely to like your ads"

jedimastert··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
The US is not even close to the first modern country to move away from single cent coins, and there are many examples of others that don't have "hyperinflation", for example the Netherlands, Italy, and Canada.

People have been talking about getting rid of the penny for decades.

jedimastert··on XSLT RIP
Wow, what an absolute blast from the past.

The page styling is harkening back to the style of some EARLY early personal amateur niche sites. It reminds me of like Time Cube <https://web.archive.org/web/20150506055228/http://www.timecu...> or like Neocity pages, even TempleOS in the earlier days. T

It's really taking me back, I'm actually getting a little emotional...

jedimastert··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
That's a fair point
jedimastert··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
Samsung still makes regular fridges too, although I'm confused by the fact that you put water-dispensing/ice-making and screens together.

I have a Samsung Bespoke, for example, and you can 100% turn the ice-making off and just use that part of the freezer for more freezer space. No screen, the from it blank because all the water dispensing stuff is on the inside and I think (?) you can get one without it

jedimastert··on Ask HN: How would you set up a child’s first Linux computer?
I don't want to police someone else's parenting, but even with supervision I would be deeply cautious against exposing kids to LLMs from a developmental standpoint. Even adults have a hard time not anthropomorphizing LLMs, a kid under a certain again would essentially be unable to not view an LLM as a person, which could have some SERIOUS ramifications down the line.
jedimastert··on Public Montessori programs strengthen learning outcomes at lower costs: study
> If you care enough to send your child to a Montessori school

Think you mean to say that if you are well be enough to send your child to a private school...I try not to pull out the "privilege" card but good grief.

jedimastert··on Twake Drive – An open-source alternative to Google Drive

That's what I thought was well, like a Morse code detector tied to the lock on the door or something lol
jedimastert··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I'm unaware of any organization that doesn't give the same number of vacation days based on religion and region- or company-wide holidays...
jedimastert··on Show HN: I built a simple ambient sound app with no ads or subscriptions
It's kinda funny these things exist to me. I actually used to keep a window AC unit when I could have upgrade to something much nicer because the noise helped me sleep.
jedimastert··on ICE bought vehicles equipped with fake cell towers to spy on phones
More than zero.
jedimastert··on Fire destroys S. Korean government's cloud storage system, no backups available

It's funny that you mention that...

jedimastert··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
As a side note, that's the same stuff that just sat on shelves and went back instead of going to starving kids all over the world because Trump and Musk and Co. decided that USAID was a "waste of money".

jedimastert··on Founder sentenced to seven years in prison for fraudulent sale to JPMorgan
Oh don't worry, the judge absolutely LIT UP JPMorgan in the judgement. This is only a taste

> Still, the judge criticized the bank, saying “they have a lot to blame themselves” for after failing to do adequate due diligence. He quickly added, though, that he was “punishing her conduct and not JPMorgan’s stupidity."

jedimastert··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
I would also push back against the whole "this is just being perceived in public" thing, because you're not consenting to being perceived by the entire planet, you were consenting to being perceived by the people present and in the community. Like if there's a bully in the community, the community can do something about it or you can at least avoid them. Like you are consenting to interacting with a culture of like-minded people, and you know they're like-minded because they all showed up to the same event to do the same thing. That is not true of the open internet.
jedimastert··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
I mean the whole point of privacy is you not knowing... It kind of defeats the point if you need a reason, because the reason is probably...private
jedimastert··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
Back in my day shakes first there were places where someone could do things that would normally be mildly embarrassing because they were in a supportive community. In this example, it could be playing pretend and possibly saying goofy things or falling over and tripping or getting your butt handed to you by someone half your age or something.

When I was young, it would have been playing open mics as a teenager. I wasn't amazing but it's really important to play publicly in order to grow as a musician, and that means kinda sucking in public. I would not have become a musician if I didn't have that supportive community.

In this day and age, if I were to do that, someone would probably live stream it or film it on their phone and put it on YouTube, then It would get found by the kind of awful kids that like to make other people feel awful for no reason, then they would have found my like Facebook or social media or something, I'd catch shit at school, and I never would have touched an instrument again.

So yeah, save your highlight reels for someone else, thanks.
