Contemplating life after X-Windows and Mosaic.

You should spend some time w/ FreeBSD.
jeberle··on Windows-NT vs. CP/M
It had better boot fast. CP/M makes you reboot every time you swap a disk.

Note, you could make the same case for an IBM PC with two 5.25" drives (DOS).

jeberle··on Okay. So what are you going to do about it?
A former boss of mine had a simple rule: you can't complain unless you can suggest an alternative. It was a great source of ideas.

26. $ ~<Ctrl-Z> # suspend current SSH session

Very useful.

One of the core freedoms in the US is the freedom to travel. You don't have to request "travel papers" from the Central Office to freely move about the country and beyond. Likewise, "liberty" is synonymous with travel. Vote well & write your representatives. This is not good for the country's ideals.

jeberle··on Things I wish I knew the day I started Berklee
Certainly one of these things should have been that the school was founded by Lee Berk, who thought the name "Berklee" was good in light of UC Berkeley!
jeberle··on Pong written in both flash and HTML5. Left side is flash, right side is HTML5.
CPU was pegged. I'll blame the flash side.
jeberle··on Ask HN: What do you want to tell Microsoft?
- Drop the shiny, translucent Aqua-wanna-be thing. Windows should look serious, a la NT 3.51/Win2K. It's been downhill since then. If you want to copy someone, take some style hints from NeXTStep, or these guys: http://www.ableton.com/live-session-view.

- Hard deprecate the backslash. Forward slashes have been OK in code since forever. The GUI should display & accept slashes.

- Incorporate bundles into Explorer & the Windows loader (again, like NeXT). This would eliminate thousands of brittle file references in the reg db.

jeberle··on There is a Horse in the Apple Store
Had he been paying attention, he would have noticed there's also a man in a kilt.
jeberle··on 36 Hours in Silicon Valley
"Swing by...", Channing & Emerson in Palo Alto for the Lee De Forest memorial plaque (not far from the HP Garage). His work preceded all the other sights mentioned.

You might also want to spare 30m for a quick tour of the Stanford campus. About as far from NY as you're going to get, and a SV linchpin.

jeberle··on The Stock Market Is Still for Suckers
Looking back to 1971, for any 20 year period the S&P 500 netted a gain. For the last 20 years, that gain was 6% per year. OK, but not what I would term "crushing" performance.

For the last 10 years, the S&P 500 is down 2.5% on an annual basis. You could have done better w/ govt bonds & CD ladders.

I think the 20 year plan assumes a greater will power than the greater investing community possesses.

jeberle··on HTML5 Reset
Yeah, you're probably right, and it is a pretty ugly page.
jeberle··on HTML5 Reset
This is what's great about the web. Not only is the code in plain text and freely shared, but when you give it away, everyone just complains about it.
jeberle··on Which programming language is fastest?
Also notice, time is plotted on a log scale.
jeberle··on Western civilization runs on the mainframe
Mainframes are very good at their jobs. Where do you think virtual machines, NoSQL databases, SQL databases, etc., got their start -- about 40 years ago?

Page at a time remote interfaces anyone?

jeberle··on Which NoSQL Platform is Right For You?
The survey doesn't include BerkeleyDB? Half the packages are either built on it or are knock-offs. VSAM KSDS, anyone? Booyeah!
jeberle··on MenuetOS - An OS written entirely in assembly
Kids stuff. Try doing that on a Z80. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SymbOS
jeberle··on Go's Declaration Syntax
You might compare the results with SPECS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Significantly_Prettier_and_Easi... -- an alternate syntax for C++. I find its productions clearer than those of Go's.
jeberle··on Every programming languages are just sequence, selection, iteration
I happily accept the mad flourishes of Robert Martin. They fortify his arguments and help engage the audience. Good education has an element of entertainment and emotion. It's a part of how we learn, or at least, how we learn best.
jeberle··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
Gray text on a light gray background is very hard to read. See for yourself: http://www.fastnlight.com/contrast.html Black text on a white background please, or make the gray text/gray background style something I can turn off. Thanks.
