jeanloolz··on Chess is just poker now
Anecdote: the creator of the biggest poker site ever made (Pokerstars) is also the creator of the chess.com platform.
jeanloolz··on 1Password delisting forum posts critical of their new Electron based 1Password 8
Happy paying customer here as well. I would looooove to have email protection/relay service included to 1password. The synergy is real between those 2 services, and I would love to see it happening.

EDIT: was unaware of it of 1password integration with Fastmail. This is actually possible.

jeanloolz··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Was contacted by Facebook recently for a data engineering position and was told I had to grind some leetcode to prepare for the interview process. I just could not be bothered and I can not be the only one who made that decision. My guess is that companies relying on leetcode style interview are also missing on some very capable engineers who just don't want to grind leetcode outside working hours.
jeanloolz··on Last Day of IKEA in Moscow
I feel exactly the same way and while #IStandForUkraine, my pessimistic side of me thinks that pushing Russia to extreme isolation is not going to have the expected result in the long run neither. This is an absolute tragedy.
jeanloolz··on Skillsoft Buys Codecademy for $525M
I learnt coding with Codecademy back in 2013. I was 32 years old with a career in marketing. Their Python class was the perfect introduction to coding in general and I got hooked instantly. I took my first job as a software developer 6 years ago after an intense 2 years of self learning following the codecademy class . I'm now senior data engineer in a pretty big company in Europe. I feel blessed for discovering Codecademy.

A big thanks to them. I owe them my new career.

jeanloolz··on Creating personalised data stories with GPT-3
Mount Everest, as far as I know is near 8850 meters high, which in feet is probably around 30000. The article snippets you took seem right to me, the author math checks out.
jeanloolz··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
I feel exactly the same about the column limit (PEP 8 advocates for 79 chars). It forces me to organise my code better one line at a time, and I'm convinced it makes the reading faster.
jeanloolz··on AWS S3? Cloudflare R2? We think we know what's coming next
What the fuck does WTF means?
jeanloolz··on Three ex-US intelligence officers admit hacking for UAE
Similar experience. I discovered this podcast earlier this year and got completely hooked. Had to listen to them all.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: My country may be in the midst of a coup – how should I get prepared?
Really depends which metric you're looking at when measuring safety to be honnest. Granted US have some of the richest and safest places in the world, they also have plenty of other places straight from a 3rd world country. The US approach to health is terrible compared to many other countries. Homicide rate is much higher. If you think USA is politically safe, January 6th would like a word with you.
jeanloolz··on @ggreenwald on Tucker Carlson NSA spying claims
It baffles me that Tucker Carlson is taken seriously by a large chunk of US population. This is not the first time he pulls this sort of stunt.
jeanloolz··on Google Workspace for everyone
Excel is certainly superior for analysis etc, but there are plenty of use cases where Google sheets is superior to excel, for instance http api to interact with your sheet. Depends what you're trying to achieve really.
jeanloolz··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
> copying it

"it" could refers to the feature, not the code. That sentence is clearly ambiguous, the meaning slightly change based on what it refers to.

jeanloolz··on Excel Never Dies
I have extensive experience with both and the main benefit Excel has over Google Sheets (in my opinion) is the amount of rows you can handle all at once. With Excel you can manipulate 200k rows easily. The same can not be said with Google sheets due to the fact that it remains a cloud based tool. I found Google sheet to be enough though in 90% of my cases (may change depending on what you usually work on). The scripting ecosystem google sheets has is amazing (apps scripts and various python libraries) and is much stronger compared to Excel.
jeanloolz··on Beirut Port Explosion
That is some serious level investigation and presentation. The video is insanely visually informative. The 3D rendering matched with the mobile videos of the bags got my jaw dropped.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: Films that made you see the world differently?
Amour was so brutal to me but it really touched me. I highly recommend this movie.
jeanloolz··on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tests positive for Covid-19
He will be most likely fine but this shows the extent of this pandemic for sure and should encourage people in UK and anywhere else to take it seriously.
jeanloolz··on Show HN: Visual SQL
I would love to be involved with that book. I'm a data engineer myself and I have built SQLBucket, a python library I have been told is similar to getdbt.com (although I'm not familiar with DBT, the similarities have been mentioned to me on various occasions).

Shameless plug: http://github.com/socialpoint-labs/sqlbucket

jeanloolz··on Ask HN: How do I escape webdev?
I actually learnt programming 7 years ago with the codecademy Python class after a career in marketing. I'm now a confirmed Data Engineer. I feel blessed.
jeanloolz··on Domain Logic and SQL (2003)
I agree completely. I love SQL just as much. I built a little framework based on SQL and jinja last year.

Shameless plug: https://github.com/socialpoint-labs/sqlbucket

Just changed job though, and the data engineering team I just joined is literally banning raw SQL and enforcing scala instead... I'm a bit sad.

jeanloolz··on Sheetfu – Python library to interact with Google Sheets V4 API
As far as I know, Gspread does not handle data other than cells values. Sheetfu can however, you can get or set notes, and colors for example. Pygsheet also can do that.

Sheetfu contains the Table module which gives you the possibility to interact with your sheet as it it was a database table (as close as we can get to ORM-ish approach).

jeanloolz··on Sheetfu – Python library to interact with Google Sheets V4 API
Author here: Sheetfu original goal was to port the Google Apps Script API for spreadsheet (made in javascript) to Python, so you'll see a lot of common ground between those 2 libs.

You could probably achieve the same with both Pygsheet and Sheetfu, the interface is a bit different. Sheetfu, however, contains the Table module, which completely abstracts the coordinate system for a more ORM-ish syntax.

jeanloolz··on How Google Could Collapse
I'm not too sure about the conclusion of the article. While it's true that ad blockers have been adopted by users, advertising revenue from Google is about to get a 15% growth this year compared to last year.

Regarding Cloud computing, although I have no numbers to back this up, I'm pretty sure Google Cloud will also grow nicely in the next decade.

From an AI perspective, they're clearly leading that field over amazon, without a doubt.
