jeanloolz··on I Put 4M Suns in a Black Hole over New York [video]
What an epic video! Great presentation, phenomenal explanation. What a truly great work.
jeanloolz··on Korean researchers' neural AI chip: 625 times less power draw, 41 times smaller
Sounds like some company out there is trying to position themselves to get their share of the hard-to-believe 7 trillion AI chip investment!
jeanloolz··on Mistral: The 9-Month-Old AI Startup Challenging Silicon Valley's Giants
Well, you made a worthwhile comment that triggered an interesting discussion, which luckily I had some knowledge about. I simply brought up new information to you. I don't perceive anything wrong.

I work in data and I'm french, so Mistral.ai has been on my radar a little more maybe. I was familiar with this memo before Mistral even released their first model. It was discussed a lot in France as this was the base for their first seed round that gave them 100 million euros in investment.

More here if you're interested: https://philippeoger.com/pages/ai-scene-in-europe-last-week/

jeanloolz··on Mistral: The 9-Month-Old AI Startup Challenging Silicon Valley's Giants
Their strategic memo created in April/May last year present a founding team of 6 people actually: https://philippeoger.com/documents/1/mistral.ai-strategic-me...

The memo in itself is a very good read.

jeanloolz··on AI is making critical health care decisions, but is unregulated
It is regulated in Europe via the AI Act, effective in 2026 (iirc).
jeanloolz··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
Obsolete if you don't take cost in consideration. Having 10 millions of token going through each layer of the LLM is going to cost a lot of money each time. At gpt4 rate that could mean 200 dollars for each inference
jeanloolz··on Bitcoin is dead, but it was a good try
I used the word account but should have used the term wallet, fair point.
jeanloolz··on Bitcoin is dead, but it was a good try
> I want Bitcoin because I’m tired of my wealth being stolen through inflation.

I actually heard this many times but never understood the math behind this statement. Today is the day I dare asking. Do you mind explaining me like I'm 5 years old?

jeanloolz··on Bitcoin is dead, but it was a good try
Bitcoin from a privacy standpoint is not good for various reasons. First, if you make a transaction with someone, that person now knows your account and can easily find out your bitcoin balance, all due to the blockchain being public for everyone to see. Second, if the bitcoin account you are using was created on a website similar to coinbase, kraken, binance etc, your personal ID is completely tied to your bitcoin wallets created in those platforms. Of course there are ways to circomvert those but in a general sense and at its core Bitcoin is just terrible for privacy.
jeanloolz··on Brave Leo now uses Mixtral 8x7B as default
The creators of the model actually have their own platform where you can access this model and others via API: https://console.mistral.ai/
jeanloolz··on AlphaGeometry: An Olympiad-level AI system for geometry
Chess never faded away. It actually has never been as big as it is today.
jeanloolz··on Analysing the Twitter User Exodus to Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads
I have a similar experience. I never used my twitter account for over 10 years, but strangely I have been the most active I have ever been in the last 12 months (due to interest on AI as well). Maybe this is where the AI/ML community is the most represented.
jeanloolz··on Many AI safety orgs have tried to criminalize currently-existing open-source AI
Thinking the same thing. I mean who would benefit the most from making open source models illegal? Sure looks like a lot like regulatory capture to me.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: What are good books/blogs to read for a first time CTO?
Managing Humans: Biting and Humorous Tales of a Software Engineering Manager
jeanloolz··on Disappointed with the Mistral AI console.
In all fairness, the platform is in beta so I'm not surprised it's still lacking some features. From what I gathered on their discord, it looks like token usage is coming really soon. I'm not sure about 2FA though.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: Netflix doing mass layoffs today?
I hope they get a good deal.
jeanloolz··on Mistral "Mixtral" 8x7B 32k model [magnet]
Can you point me to a function calling fine tune mistral model? This is the only feature that keeps me from migrating away from openai. I searched a few time but could not find anything in HG
jeanloolz··on I used AI to make an app to help me with my ADHD
Thank you very much. I will check that out immediately
jeanloolz··on I used AI to make an app to help me with my ADHD
Your comment made me realize that I may have ADHD... I'm 42. I completely relate to parent comment too. Can someone point me to liturgies on the condition, I would like to understand a bit more? What is the process to get a diagnosis?
jeanloolz··on Joint Statement on AI Safety and Openness
Leaving AI to a handful of companies is in my opinion the fastest route for inequality and power concentration/centralisation, and this is in a way an AI disaster we should be worrisome. Power corrupts, great power greatly corrupts, this is not entirely new.

From where I stand, it looks like the pandora box has already been opened anyway. The era of hugginface and/or Llama2 models is only going to grow from there.

jeanloolz··on 30-year fixed mortgage rate just hit 8% for the first time since 2000
Fixed rate is really common in Europe, definitely not a US thing.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: Who is using small OS LLMs in production?
7B or 70B?
jeanloolz··on Command line functions around OpenAI
Signed up and subscribe with spanish card without any issues.
jeanloolz··on Tell HN: Fired after 7 years during maternity leave paperwork filing
The fact that the company is reputation.com is the biggest irony ever.
jeanloolz··on Ask HN: Best LastPass alternatives for corporate password management
I migrated from lastpass to 1password just a year ago. Could not be happier with their service.
jeanloolz··on Four thousand weeks
What a phenomenal quote.
jeanloolz··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
Thanks for sharing this. First time I read it, and the accuracy of Yishan's predictions, made back in April, are incredibly spot on. Phenomenal analysis as well on the difference between censoring ideas versus censoring behaviours. Great read.
jeanloolz··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
We all do it already with consent, using our phones.
jeanloolz··on Digging 10 miles underground could yield enough geothermal energy to power Earth
I am very skeptical of the claims made on their website. Basically heals (almost!) everything, for the price of 1200 euros. It has all the properties of a scam product.
jeanloolz··on We've hit 1M monthly active users
To me, in term of audience and scale, mastodon is to Twitter what hacker news is to Reddit. Smaller, less toxic, easier to moderate.
