jdminhbg··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
> Some games (founding companies) are non-zero sum. Some (like employing Americans vs non-Americans) are zero sum.

Not even wrong

jdminhbg··on Is air travel getting worse?
> Business is representing an ever increasing % of travellers

Is it? I thought that trend reversed in 2020.

jdminhbg··on Is air travel getting worse?
> Just a lot of googling

I'm not sure I've ever seen this as a pejorative for doing research to come up with sources for data before.

jdminhbg··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Understood, but it's also the case that people frequently cite Stoller as if he's a legitimate analyst like a New York Times or Wall Street Journal reporter with skills and editors, and he doesn't actually understand any of the subjects he's trying to report on. I'll dial the snark back.
jdminhbg··on 'Starter packs' have played a central role in Bluesky's rapid growth
Bluesky is basically "Twitter as it was years ago," so if you didn't like Twitter then, you won't like Bluesky now.
jdminhbg··on In a milestone for Manhattan, a pair of coyotes has made Central Park their home
Coyotes aren’t native to the northwest, they moved in after European settlers extirpated the wolves. They almost surely are less damaging to natives though.
jdminhbg··on Cloudflare to introduce pay-per-crawl for AI bots
Do you see what the issue might be with the parenthetical there?
jdminhbg··on America’s incarceration rate is in decline
Boomers were essentially statistically indistinguishable from Millennials in the 2024 presidential election: https://www.businessinsider.com/how-generations-voted-trump-...
jdminhbg··on Few Americans pay for news when they encounter paywalls
> Too bad crypto fees make this as untenable as credit cards.

Nah, you can send USDC for less than a tenth of a penny now: https://tokentool.bitbond.com/gas-price/base

The issue is getting people to actually get over the hump of deciding to send money to someone.

jdminhbg··on Tesla launches robotaxi rides in Austin
I didn’t say nobody should try to solve the problem using lidar, I just said humans are an existence proof that it can be done. Lidar gives you more data, but maybe that data will turn out to be overkill. We’ll find out.
jdminhbg··on Tesla launches robotaxi rides in Austin
> I'm curious what gives you such blind faith that Tesla's vision-only tech will work out.

Obviously, only vision and hearing are required for driving. The question isn't "can it work," the question is "which approach will be economically viable on what time scale, and is there a winner-takes-all dynamic that excludes the approach that comes second."

jdminhbg··on College baseball, venture capital, and the long maybe
Do you feel the same way about drama or music? If not, why not?
jdminhbg··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
> I think the purpose of the change was to "increase revenue"

Yes, but in a specific way: they were trying to offset the tax cuts they wanted so they could pass it via the reconciliation process and avoid the Senate filibuster. They didn't actually care about this revenue and the assumption from most people was that the specific carve-out would disappear in some future bill.

jdminhbg··on Tesla seeks to guard crash data from public disclosure
This mostly just demonstrates that the reporter doesn’t know what they’re talking about. ADAS is a term of art that encompasses everything above dumb cruise control, including things like adaptive cruise control or collision detection.
jdminhbg··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
> Replacing every song or album I have ever purchased with AI generated facsimiles

The error here is that the quote from the article says "the median artist" and you have never purchased a song or album by a median musician.

jdminhbg··on I salvaged $6k of luxury items discarded by Duke students
Somewhere there is a line between setting an unopened box of high-end sneakers on the street and putting a rusty mattress frame on the street, and dumping like the latter situation is illegal.
jdminhbg··on Show HN: AI Baby Monitor – local Video-LLM that beeps when safety rules break
> When does it ever happen that a kid too small to be safe by himself has to be let alone, with a camera to record him?

Nap time? Overnight?

jdminhbg··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
I haven’t seen one on each floor, either, but that’s still not as convenient as one in the room that’s yours so you can run it while you’re out to dinner or overnight while you sleep. It’s shared so you have to plan around it.
jdminhbg··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
I have never stayed in a hotel room that had a washing machine.
jdminhbg··on First American pope elected and will be known as Pope Leo XIV
Boris Johnson was also born an American citizen, but renounced it before coming prime minister. Not technically head of state (the queen was), but close enough.
jdminhbg··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
It's been a nice kind of fig leaf, but constitutionally the president is the AG's boss, so it doesn't make any sense for the AG to investigate the president. There's an entire branch of government given this power in the Constitution, they've just decided they don't want it.
jdminhbg··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
> the once independent Attorney General

This has never been the case; JFK appointed his little brother AG. The problem is that the Congress should be investigating and prosecuting the president but will not.

jdminhbg··on Waymo and Toyota outline partnership to advance autonomous driving deployment
> Adaptive cruise control could do that too.

No, it could not.

jdminhbg··on Only Teslas exempt from new auto tariffs thanks to 85% domestic content rule
No, OP is referring to the fact that the companies that are big enough to be subject to the EU DSA's rules about platforms are all American. So any fines handed down for violations of the DSA are exclusively to American big tech firms. The rejoinder is that the rules apply to everyone, it just happens that the companies that are subject are American.
jdminhbg··on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law
You’re missing a third option there, which makes it not extortion.
jdminhbg··on Raspberry Pi Lidar Scanner
His opinions aren’t much different in interviews I’ve heard since, although of course that doesn’t mean he’s completely unbiased now.
jdminhbg··on College Towns: Urbanism from a Past Era
> high capacity accommodations

I like city density myself, but you do have to remember that "high capacity accommodations" in this case means "sharing a room with a stranger and a bathroom with twenty."

Thank you, very helpful.
jdminhbg··on 4chan Sharty Hack And Janitor Email Leak
I think "normalfag" is a backformation from "normie"; at any rate, "normie" is itself 4chan slang that entered norm... ie... usage one way or another. "Based" was coined by Lil B but absolutely entered wide usage via being adopted as a meme by 4chan.
