jdelsman··on Linode is down in Fremont, CA
I have already opened a ticket to move to their Dallas location. Many people have told me it is the best. Wish I knew this upon first signing up with them...

jdelsman··on Stay away from This* (thiswebhost.com)
You are assuming he's a grown man.
jdelsman··on I’m sorry, but were you actually trying to remember your comical passwords?
Unfortunately, DropBox doesn't work in China. I have resulted to using a USB thumbdrive, but that's not as elegant. Can't use VPN at work, either, which sucks.
jdelsman··on Google Buys Motorola For $12.5 Billion
Yeah, I agree. I contract at Motorola in China, and it is extremely regimented. The Chinese are very good at it, though. Coming from a startup culture, I can tell you it is hard to believe the two cultures are going to sit well with each other. There are going to have to be some changes.

I think its convenient how the software structure is already on Gerrit (http://code.google.com/p/gerrit/), and we all use Google Apps for email, etc.

1Password on the Mac is great. I actually also have the iPhone application, and I can't imagine what I'd do without it now. Well, especially since now all of my passwords are random for the most part. I'd definitely recommend it.

The only downside is that they don't have a version for Linux. Oh well.

jdelsman··on Why U.S. Broadband is So Slow
Seriously? Move to China, then we'll talk about slow broadband...
jdelsman··on Facebook Wins “Worst API” in Developer Survey
This is like free user testing info for building APIs. Companies should take note, especially ones building APIs right now (like me)
jdelsman··on Google+ is the fastest website to ever reach 25 Million visitors
Maybe for you, but I have an update about every hour or less -- during non-peak times, even! (I am in China; most of my friends are in the US)
jdelsman··on Google+ for iOS is out
Interesting. Using this app, I'm able to use Google+ in China. However, going to plus.google.com doesn't work. Does this use a different communication method we & China aren't aware of?
jdelsman··on Rails 3.1 HackFest
Would anyone be interested in participating together in Beijing, China?
jdelsman··on Do You Really Need a College Degree to Get a Programming Job?
No, you don't.
jdelsman··on Google backs gay marriage
Get rid of "marriage", and this whole mess would be a moot point. :) But, anyway, go Google!
jdelsman··on 7 Principles Of Clean And Optimized CSS Code
It's not uncommon for files for enterprise sites to exceed 30KB. Ours is about 45KB, but we have some work to do on it. Oh, and we call customizations for our other clients, too. Keep in mind, that this is an uncompressed file, which does need pruning, rollups and compression.
jdelsman··on Web Design Pattern
Wow, are there more of these?
jdelsman··on Backslapping Ruby’s average performance once again
Taking the other side for a moment, I think things like EC2 and S3 could help mitigate some of the costs of scaling RoR apps like this. Thought out prior to making rash decisions like buying dedicated servers from Joyent at a high cost, you could possibly save your company quite a bit of cash.

However, I do agree that Ruby (and Rails) needs to get its act together. Sure, its never going to be the best, but the ease of development and deployment and (etc.) makes it very, very hard to turn down.

BTW: 25 servers to service up to 400 images per second is inaccurate. It only took them 8 asset servers to serve that amount of images. Even so, that is pretty ridiculous. I would have to say that they didn't spend time optimizing their asset servers, or anything else other than Ruby. I think it could be done better.
