jdeaton··on Google pays ‘enormous’ sums to maintain search-engine dominance, DOJ says
GPM to YTM wasnt wasn't a rebranding, its a completely different (and much worse) product.
jdeaton··on On Device Learning
Have you heard of the molecule dopamine?
jdeaton··on Googling 'cancer genetics conferences' only returns ads
no?
jdeaton··on Does my data fit in RAM?
I've done this though the data in the table was split across DataFrames in many concurrent processes. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/49438954/python-shared-m...
jdeaton··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
Perhaps the root of your loneliness comes not from the flaws of others but from within. Have you considered that it's source is actually your feeling of superiority to everyone around you, not their lack of (what you perceive as) ability?
jdeaton··on The big six matrix factorizations
That is fascinating. Do you have an example of this which you can point to?
jdeaton··on The big six matrix factorizations
This is a fantastically clear outline of this topic. Thank you!

> The terms “factorization” and “decomposition” are synonymous and it is a matter of convention which is used. Our list comprises three factorization and three decompositions.

I can't tell if this is a joke: right after saying that these two words mean the same thing in this context, they are then used to categorize the methods.

Edit: This is the kind of content that proves the "dead internet theory" is wrong.

jdeaton··on Emacs for Professionals
> since all the information you need to know is in a single place, it is much easier to use than a web search engine like Google. So step #1 is learn how to use the manual page browser and search engine.

Concerning the author doesn't see the irony asserting a tool is easier to use than google search immediately before listing a dozen keyboard shortcuts to know to use it.

jdeaton··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
I've been disappointed after following scientists/engineers who's work I respect to find that they consistently tweet cynical, negative takes on inconsequential topics. For better or worse it really degrades my respect for them intellectually and has been one of those "don't meet you heroes" moments for me.
jdeaton··on Overengineered Japanese Mechanical Pencils [video]
Cool! I just bought one of these (the shake one) and while checking out I accidentally didn't un-check the "sign me up for your newsletter box". Instead of automatically starting to spam me– they actually sent me a confirmation email asking if I really wanted to sign up for their newsletter– how considerate! Bravo Jet Pens for avoiding that dark pattern.
jdeaton··on A modern self-referential weight matrix that learns to modify itself
I'm having a hard time reading this paper without hearing you-again's voice in my head.
jdeaton··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
Looks absolutely disgusting.
jdeaton··on What happens if you try to download and install Firefox on Windows
On my pixel youtube links also open in the browser but still there is a popup every time I open a chat in messages that contains a youtube link. I literally go and delete the youtube links people have sent me to stop it.
jdeaton··on What happens if you try to download and install Firefox on Windows
On Android if you disable the youtube app then apps like messages start complaining with popups if you receive a youtube link "you need to enable the youtube app in order for this app to work correctly"
jdeaton··on Finding Waldo in π
Do the digits of pi contain all digits of any rational approximation of e? Is the same true in reverse?
jdeaton··on Introduction to K-Means Clustering
After having implemented k-means ~5 times in undergraduate classes, it was interesting to learn that k-means is just a special case of expectation maximization.
jdeaton··on Ask HN: What ML platform are you using?
I put together a linux box with a 2080ti a few years ago and have been using it consistently for personal ml research ever since. Ive found it well worth the investment and learned that the ease with which I can jump into hacking on a project is key, which is why this works so well for me. I can just ssh in at any time and start experimenting with models. Even if its not technically economical when you do the math, the ease, reliability and fact that I know my models arent being billed per hour helps encourage me to experiment often, which is kwy to learning.

As for software, I do everything with jax and tensorboard for viewing experiments. Jax is a phenomenal library for personal ml learning as its extremely flexible and has relatively low level composable abstractions.

jdeaton··on Show HN: All desktop software calculators are wrong, so I had to build my own
I still use the python repl in a terminal for my desktop calculator. Its a good choice since usually im already in the terminal anyways.
jdeaton··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team
I cant tell if this is a joke. Have you ever looked at a production java codebase once
jdeaton··on Google Search Is Dying
> Early adopters aren’t using Google anymore.

What are they using now?

jdeaton··on This needs some heavy checking... (line 1029)
goto usage in systems programming is actually much more prevalent and less of an anti-pattern/smell than in other contexts. This is because you often need to ensure every resource acquired during the function is cleaned up along each branch that the function could exit through. Because in systems programming you'll often do an operation, check if it succeeded and exit if not. The goto resource cleanup pattern avoids you having to duplicate the clean-up-partially-acquired-resouces at every early-return statement.
jdeaton··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Wikipedia
Can you make a chrome extension that does the reverse of this? Make "modern" webpages on rest of the web look like wikipeidia?
jdeaton··on Freqfs: In-memory filesystem cache for Rust
My thought exactly.
jdeaton··on An error message if you put more than 2^24 items in a JS Map object
The actual mistake here was trying to do bioinformatics in javascript.
jdeaton··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
Great feature! This will help me stop using twitter!
jdeaton··on Reflections on 10k Hours of Programming
> If you have to write a comment that isn't a docstring, it should probably be refactored.

Yikes. Can't read past that.

jdeaton··on New exotic matter particle, a tetraquark, discovered at CERN
I wonder if the sophons from Trisolaris would have blocked this discovery.
jdeaton··on Concise algorithms written in Julia
Gross.
jdeaton··on Quantum Computer Datasheet [pdf]
Anybody know what the difference between Virtual Z and Physical Z are?
