If he writes code he's an engineer.

Mostly jaded on our industry and attempt to help younger engineers realize what they are getting into.
If he writes code he's an engineer.
I stayed in that role longer than I should have and cost myself a lot of growth and money by not switching jobs every 2 to 3 years like I do now.
It's a warning that if your livelihood or something is really important to you, you should not build it inside google or apples walled garden. Or if you do, know that for any reason they choose they can kick you off. Unfair as that is.
Welcome to capitalism. Go host your own stuff if you don't like their rules.
In the future, fully control the accounts yourself or don't build in someones walled garden and then complain when they ask you to leave.
When we get the full story it's usually less black and white. Quick skim over the thread and it sounds like they let an ex-employee have access to one of their accounts and he committed multiple violations? Was he spamming? Was he uploading malicious content to the store?
Also, don't build on others platforms if you want to control your destiny. You can't have it both ways.
They may still "control" css and xml (not sure the exhaustive list) but I don't understand why those haven't been moved to WHATWG as well.
And I'm a software engineer, I solve business problems with code. If I decide to to write some code that doesn't help the company I would probably be fired or at least put on a PIP
They can also want to help people, have a ton of empathy and be literal saints. But that's their personal motivation and not what the job actually is.
No emotions come into this.
(this is not to say you can't have friends at work, but the company is not your family and will drop you the day you aren't productive any longer)
Also, not speaking for others but I enjoyed it because it's a great example of the hacker mindset and their willingness to write a blogpost to share it with others made my day slightly better.
I also wish there was a metal spike to put closed issues on as mentioned in another comment, lol. Just makes sense.
Show him Cypress or your preferred choice for integration testing and see if writing simple integration tests piques his interest. It's close enough to engineering that he should get a feel for what the job is like while being "relatively" easy to learn in a few weeks.
The rancor this protest has caused in certain tech circles has really shown that we believe we're somehow different or better than the rest of the world.
In the real world 1 specific region has violated the norms the rest of us have agreed to ... you don't get to indiscriminately kill innocents while taking their land and has accted appropriately by cutting them off.
In the tech world we are screaming about how the people in that region are getting inconvenienced by the free tools we provide because we are supposed to be above "politics"
Asking google to take down someones opinion about a business would be violating that persons first amendment right (assuming they are American). Unless you could prove libelous intent. (which luckily is very hard to prove and doesn't cover someone disliking your business)
How do we or google know if he was disgruntled vs fired, how do we know if he didn't come in as a customer after he was fired and was treated like shit?
I'm imagining the situation where in your world where every business who got a bad review would be calling google. Imagine the number of bullshit calls they would get? And how much all of us would have to pay to support that?
If you want a real person to help you, pay for it. Plenty of companies are willing to sell you a service contract, even google, if you're willing to pay.
Vote with your dollars (even if the original poster preemptively tried to say why that won't work ... it's the ONLY thing that ever has in my experience)
Also, anecdote incoming, the largest budget I've ever had on a software project was for a "Defense" project. I'm aware that I'm a hippocrit btw and have made a ton of money from our industry and have now got to a point I am lucky enough to pick my projects to avoid questionable ones.
My point was, tech isn't trying to make the world better, we're trying to make a buck and solve interesting problems (some of which objectively make the world worse). Let's be honest with ourselves more.
Being threatened is never ok but dissent and different opinions are good and should be encouraged. And just to show you my point this thread comes off as a naive kid excited he's found like minded people who won't change his world view. I don't think we should be celebrating that.
HN is an advertisement product for a venture capitalist fund. None of this is being run for the benefit of humanity, or to provide a safe space for us techies to opine. It's to make a buck, which is fine ... but let's not kid ourselves about it's intent.
And I enjoy it too obviously or I wouldn't be here, but at this point i enjoy it because I get to show that not all techies share the same mind.
Also, if you feel warm and welcome, ignore me. That's the beauty of the internet, you get to pick and choose what you consume. Just don't only pick the things you agree with or that make you feel safe, that road leads to trouble.
Also if you're going to delete my comments just delete my account. I'm done ignoring my industry will gladly enable dictators and pretending we are neutral. We are complicit and we need to take a stand... Or maybe we all just want to collect our fat paychecks while inventing more ways to kill people. Shrug.
Anything short of literally killing Russians, including a embargo is fair game.
Disagree? Go explain it to the Ukrainian father burying his daughter. I don't want to hear it.
Connection being the authoritative right sees Soros as the analog to the Koch bros.... not quite understanding we don't like capitalists anymore than the right likes socialists. But hey Soros === bad, leftist === bad so to the top of HN it goes. (please prove me wrong)
Edit* To expand I think it was and we are naive if we believe we aren't making political statements with a lot of the choices we make.
I'm saying if the Russian people showed that they disliked Putin in large enough numbers this would end. (either with him ousted, or him having to kill too many people to hide).
Also you are making a FANTASTIC argument for why American/EU imperialism is about to come back in a bad way.
Apparently once a dictator takes over there is no other choices but to just let him do whatever they want, the country is lost and must be "saved" from itself since it's populace can no longer resist.
