jdauriemma··on I hope distributed is not the new default
RE: traveling to socialize with distributed coworkers:

As a person with three children and a working spouse who's busier than I am, and as a person managing a distributed team, the notion of convening my colleagues in one area for a team-building event is stressful. I recently have been given budget to do so and have been volun-told to organize such an event. Many of my direct reports are eager to meet up in-person. I value their happiness so I will to oblige them. And I'm not going to lie, it sounds like fun - I really do like the people I work with. However, being away from my family for days is a hardship for my children and my spouse, who already has enough stress and is unaccustomed to being the day-to-day caregiver. Since those are the people I value most highly, it's hard for me to justify the time, expense, and effort involved with traveling for the sole purpose of socializing with my coworkers.

jdauriemma··on New on Reddit: Comment search, improved search results relevance, search design
You might be surprised at how small the Reddit team is
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: Do people at Google not use Gmail? Why don't they improve it?
Strictly speaking, it does have attachments. The <img> tag's `src` attribute can point to a remote resource or a resource attached to the email. This is an example of the latter.
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: Best practices for editing remote code locally?
Clipboards can be a hassle, for sure. Can you help me understand the impact of dotfiles / ssh key management not being a "first class concept?" How much of a time / productivity hit do you take? Thanks so much for helping me understand.
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: Best practices for editing remote code locally?
I think they were commenting on the portability of terminal-based applications and describing remote editing as a use case. You may think it's "bad" but it's also ubiquitous, resource-efficient, and free. Can you explain to this non-Windows user why vim+tmux is painful in Windows (with or without WSL) in a local or remote setting?
jdauriemma··on Daniel Gross: Why Energy Is the Best Predictor of Talent
I am begging anyone in this comment section who hires people: do not ask candidates about their favorite movies in the interview process in an attempt to identify talent.
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: What bits of fundamental knowledge are productivity multipliers?
This is fascinating, thanks for sharing. Did you use upwork or a similar platform?
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: What bits of fundamental knowledge are productivity multipliers?
Can you elaborate on how this "virtual worker" works in practice? I'd love to learn more.
jdauriemma··on How to work with me
Thanks for sharing this! I'm sure your team will benefit from the clarity with which you outlined your values and working style. Camille Fournier wrote a piece on "manager READMEs" that, if nothing else, is worth considering. I'm less opinionated about the practice, but I definitely am glad I read her article:

jdauriemma··on No news is good news
There’s a lot of virtue to be found between complete abstinence from the news and drinking from the firehose.
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: Do you contribute to open source projects?
Open source / free software and its ethos are more relevant than ever today. Cloud services, automobile software, and IoT devices are just a few examples of how computing is increasingly opaque to end users.
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: Do you contribute to open source projects?
Yes
jdauriemma··on Plain Text Sports
Adding `https://` will get you the HTML, but there's very little plain text to parse. The markup's layout depends on CSS.
jdauriemma··on Plain Text Sports
This is great! I wonder what needs to happen in order to get `curl plaintextsports.com` to Just Work, similar to `curl wttr.in`.

EDIT: After inspecting the HTML, I think Plain Text Sports is a bit of a misnomer. With that name, I might have expected a lot of <pre> tags in the markup, but there are no none to be found. Instead, CSS is used for the layout, even line breaks. So, Hypertext Sports?

jdauriemma··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
There was something on the HN front page recently that asserted that the goals of education and capitalism are (paraphrasing from memory) fundamentally at odds with one another. I thought that statement captured the state of things perfectly. All the hand-wringing over “alternatives” to universities will accomplish little if this underlying conflict is not resolved.
jdauriemma··on Have we simply stopped the process of innovating new things that solve problems?
The telephone is basically just talking
jdauriemma··on Things you don't need JavaScript for
It filtered out people who didn't know how to use HTML and CSS to render a modal, which is a very specific and not-widely-used HTML/CSS technique.
jdauriemma··on Things you don't need JavaScript for
If a software developer needed to implement such a feature given those constraints, they could gain the necessary knowledge with a two-minute internet search. Knowledge and information are common and easily acquired, critical thinking and creativity are not. I strongly recommend an interview process that screens for the latter, not the former.
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
But if the price keeps falling for electricity generation, isn’t there some sort of break-even point where you overcome the increased distribution costs?
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
Forgive me but I’m not understanding the example. Would you mind explaining why this comparison is valid for renewables but not fossil fuels?
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
That’s interesting and pretty outrageous
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
Makes sense, thanks for that perspective
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
Thanks! Hopefully that means that, if renewables keep getting cheaper, then the economics will keep getting better.
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
Let’s stipulate that I don’t know why broadband bills are getting more expensive, if you don’t mind.
jdauriemma··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
Can someone ELI5 why renewables are more expensive for consumers where I live? In Pennsylvania my electric utility allows me to choose my supplier. Invariably, the renewables are more costly than the fossil fuels. What gives? Is this just a regional phenomenon?
jdauriemma··on Ask HN: What is the most unique website you’ve come across on the internet?

jdauriemma··on A career ending mistake
Try not to consider career planning as being in the same category as task management. Instead, have a broad vision and keep a look out for opportunities that might bring you closer to that vision. Opportunities present themselves all the time; it's up to us to have the attention to notice them and the judgement to know when (not) to take them.

I laughed out loud at this, because you are 100% correct.

jdauriemma··on Why do startups hire so many people?
Truly a useful question and a great answer. A nit I’d pick with the respondent regards the so-called force-multiplier of the five-or-so founders. Productive founders are a typical feature of funded startups but their productivity can be attributed not just to their hustle but, crucially, to the nature of greenfield development. It’s way faster for anyone, regardless of how many “x’s” they have, to grind out an MVP from scratch than it is to ship features while maintaining a product that is used by real customers in production. Series A+ startups must necessarily slow down their pace-per-person, it’s an eventuality. This need not have anything to do with hiring “bozos” (eyeroll) or some of the other dismissively-mentioned roles.
jdauriemma··on 70% of startups offer remote work options as hiring heats up, YC data shows
For starters, consider creating work environments where people aren't working 60 hours a week.
