jcrben··on Mexican billionaire Salinas says his banking business may embrace Bitcoin
The vast majority of miner profits come from "mining" new bitcoin, mostly using fossil fuels. These are then sold on the open market.

There's a reason that in GAAP accounting, when a company issues new shares (dilution), it is recorded as a loss to the equity stockholders in the income statement.

I see you didn't bother to respond to the point that people have always been better off saving than consuming.

Bitcoin's cost is wealth destruction. That energy could be used for something with a real payback - housing, infrastructure, healthcare, technology - but is instead burned with nothing to show for it but extra carbon emissions and some landfilled junk gear.

Have fun destroying the planet.

It's not deflationary. The supply will increase for the next hundred years at least. The odds favor that this inflation, coupled with a lack of capital return, will underperform real investing.

The proper comparison for "investing" in bitcoin is investing in stocks, many of which ARE deflationary by decreasing their shares outstanding every year.

People are no more incentived to save by bitcoin than they are by real investment. To reiterate, it's been sound money mgmt to defer consumption and invest for the past few hundred years at least.

The payment to bitcoin miners comes from bitcoin holders. At current prices it is billions of USD per year, paid out by inflation to burn fossil fuels. I'd rather get paid on my investment than pay.

Drinking. In my case I'm trying to alkalize my urine to address IC / BPS... but if you just want the dental benefits you can treat it like a mouthwash

Yep. Altho I've been using LivFresh which contains edathamil [1] and has no baking soda.

The benefit of it being in your water is that you get that constant little flush of it

Weird teeth-cleaning trick that I discovered from suffering from interstitial cystitis / painful bladder syndrome (IC / BPS): toss a bit of baking soda in your water, such as 1 teaspoon per liter. It makes it alkaline. My teeth got whiter and felt better (less of a film feeling).

Baking soda is used as a cooking ingredient and shouldn't be too risky, but don't go overboard... bit of discussion on the IC / BPS aspect in the two citations below (including risks):

jcrben··on Ask HN: How do you deal with chronic illness?
Hey, got the same thing, diagnosed late 2018 at 33. So far I'm one of the lucky ones: a good biologic (Entyvio) + partial or exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) got me to manageable. But I have a habit of trawling the scientific literature and eventually discovered https://www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085(19)39702-1/... (Tu1716 – Highly Bioavailable Curcumin (Theracurmin®) for Crohn's Disease: Randomized, Multicenter, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial). I bought the Theracurmin product on Amazon and I feel like it was a game-changer and pushed me over the edge into deep remission, altho some foods can aggravate me.

I was lucky in that I got sick reasonably into my career, with enough resources and lack of dependents to step back and do nothing but focus on health. I believe that was key to achieving deep remission. But that type of focus doesn't necessarily lend itself to career success.

It's cliche, but you really do need to be your own advocate. "Step therapy" really does mean that you get started on old, less effective drugs first unless you fight it. And particularly in IBD, EEN is rarely used or recommended in the US relative to Europe despite good evidence https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29398336/ and clear potential as an additive effect on anyone's treatment.

PS utilized your devops tools and advice before I got Crohn's and it was critical, thanks!

jcrben··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
Yeah. I'm optimistic that the the relentless long-term competitive march to improved customer experience will include better fraud protections on debit cards. Reduced expenses as technology helps us identify fraud will also help.

I haven't used a debit card in years to maximize benefits (altho I sometimes use cash when required by small businesses), but the Capital One debit card advertises $0 Fraud Liability https://www.capitalone.com/bank/debit-card/.

jcrben··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
Wish you could disintermediate credit card fees. I'm sort of hopeful that credit card surcharging might grow (https://www.cardx.com/) and start competition on those costs.
jcrben··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
I focused on property & casualty but yes, the statute usually applies to health insurance, and I think the ACA further codified it as a requirement.

While I haven't done a deep dive recently, I doubt health insurance administrative expenses and profit are the main driving factor in health insurance costs. Losses (utilization multiplied by price) are the main driving force. You can look up rate reviews at https://ratereview.healthcare.gov/ and probably view the entire filings on the state DOI website, altho these filings are usually not really as accessible as they should be.

jcrben··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
Close, but not quite. Most states have a statute which says "rates shall not be inadequate or excessive". Pretty much all rate filings I've seen include a return on equity (ROE) in their analysis, and states review that in light of above statute.

States have pretty broad powers and I could see them forcing a disgorgement if they felt so inclined.

jcrben··on Launch HN: Savvy (YC W20) – Give employees tax-free cash for health insurance
I spent a few years as an insurance regulator (albeit on the P&C side) and I was following these regulations. I'm glad that you are out there evangelizing this, but I think in the long-run you may have to figure out how to provide additional value or you may be disintermediated. We are already at the point where we need to wring every little bit of unnecessary cost out of healthcare.
jcrben··on Launch HN: Savvy (YC W20) – Give employees tax-free cash for health insurance
As someone with a chronic illness, thank you for this. I don't want my employer to be responsible for my insurance. I want portability and privacy. I want more than just the options my employer decided to pick.

If this becomes a trend, we could see the individual ACA marketplace strengthened. Right now part of the problem is that they are missing a lot of the healthy people in the group market, which is partly why the big insurers have left the market - for example, the California exchange is missing UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and so on.
