jcpst··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
> I find it's an incredible waste of time, and I hate it.

Then maybe it is a waste of time?

I’ve been a dev for 10 years, mentored juniors, led massive projects, interviewed hundreds of candidates and don’t even remember ever going to leetcode.com until reading this comment.

I think hacker news is the only place I’ve ever seen the word “leetcode”.

But maybe I just live under a rock or something. Just making the point that maybe it is just a waste of time.

jcpst··on Ask HN: Any AI-based Code Assistants for web CRUD apps?
That’s been my experience. Also, if I’m doing CRUD, and I’ve already written code for one resource, it will give me completions in the style of that first one.
jcpst··on Ask HN: Any AI-based Code Assistants for web CRUD apps?
This is what I use github copilot for.
jcpst··on I Am Sitting in a Room (1969)
Music on a long thin wire is also very pleasing in a meditative way. A drone with what could be described as a rich “overtone cloud”. I once showed it to a friend who is a massage therapist and they would use it for sessions.
jcpst··on .NET 8
PeachPie may be worth a look. It’s a php to .net compiler.

jcpst··on .NET 8
Maybe the desktop UI story isn’t quite there yet. But I’ve been using .NET >= 5 web apps for years on linux, and it’s pretty solid with Rider. No issues debugging.

While I would prefer if I could use free tooling, Rider pays for itself in time savings very quickly.

jcpst··on The hijacking of rare Japanese KitKats
The market is very competitive- capacity can get tight, which makes room for the “little guy” to grab a load. Even at the biggest companies with millions of lines of software, tons of logistics is still driven by email.

Job boards are big business. They act like a 4th party logistics company, where they aggregate the available loads from multiple 3rd party logistics companies. But there’s plenty of these aggregation site that, as mentioned operate a lot more like Craigslist.

More sophisticated systems are like the stock market, automated systems booking loads within one second after becoming available.

jcpst··on The hijacking of rare Japanese KitKats
This is called 3rd party logistics, a trillion dollar industry.

I work as an SE at one the larger ones.

jcpst··on New job has no way of coding locally?
To me, the files are in the filesystem of the OS on my computer. I can edit, build, and debug with a toolchain that is running on my computer.

I may or may not have dependencies in a development environment that I call over the network, but the thing I’m looking to change is running on my machine.

jcpst··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Making an album.

It’s been a journey. For about a year I was trying to do it all by myself.

Then one former band mate moved back, another reached out and we reunited to make new music.

This is gonna sound corny, but after that first time we got back together to jam, later that night I was in tears because it playing with them again was such a large emotional release for me.

Now we’re in a great place, we all want the same thing. We’re all in on making new music, no one is trying to make this a career or go on tour. It has to be fun, that’s number one.

jcpst··on A Video Game That Pays: Lessons Learned from Working Remotely
Exactly- it’s risky business.
jcpst··on A Video Game That Pays: Lessons Learned from Working Remotely
Yeah, that’s why it’s so important to get out of the office by 6. They don’t want anyone to get hurt.

jcpst··on Ask HN: Is Express still "de-facto" for building Node back ends?
It’s an approach I really enjoy. Back in the day express referred to itself as a sinatra-style library (ruby).

It also seems like the modern .NET Core Http request pipeline and minimal API are inspired by express.

jcpst··on Ask HN: Is Express still "de-facto" for building Node back ends?
I used to do more node work, and that was mostly pre v4. Express was the go-to.

There’s more options out there now. I did a bit of research a few years back, and my go-to now is Fastify.

jcpst··on Giving a Shit as a Service (2022)
I think I would even enjoy someone handing me a gold star sticker.
jcpst··on Giving a Shit as a Service (2022)
It has nothing to do with the amount. It’s an uncommon item with real value. Gold stars and lollipops are not US currency.

Also, I hope most people don’t believe a gift of less than $10 usd is an insult. It’s not nothing.

jcpst··on Let me tell you about me Gear Fabrication Syndrome
GAS is often a side-effect of developing certain hobbies in a consumer-centric environment.

I feel like myself and my friends are aware of this.

GAS is the syndrome, and we talk about it to help keep ourselves in check and not lose sight of what we’re actually doing.

jcpst··on Covid's damage lingers in the heart
> That's ridiculous, especially given the new studies that show that masks didn't prevent spread at all, even according to Fauci.

Those studies are flawed. They make no distinction between N95s, surgical coverings, cloth masks, and fit testing. Those are all huge factors. Properly fitted, high quality respiratory protection is effective.

One big failing on the messaging to the general public is not making these distinctions.

jcpst··on Cooler screens
When I read this I thought it might have been satire. Then I read the comments here and it sunk in that this is real.

I hope I never come across this in real life.

jcpst··on The Problem with Jon Stewart cancellation highlights a problem for Apple content
I use a SE 2020. I thought about getting a 14 when they introduced the “satellite phone” feature. Also thought about getting a 15 because it supports recording LOG video files.

My point is I’m not so sure it’s plateaued- I don’t buy them as often because I don’t like replacing things that still work, but they do keep adding more features that I’d be interested in. (And removing some, like headphone jacks and buttons)

jcpst··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
It goes deeper than that. Even after all the sophisticated systems and automation, a huge amount of logistics is still email-driven, and it seems next to impossible to get account managers, carriers and customers past that.
jcpst··on Bandcamp's Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off
I was hoping someone would chime in with something like this. Thank you!
jcpst··on Bandcamp's Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off
My thoughts too. This is going to be tedious for those of us with larger collections… too bad there doesn’t seem to be a way to bulk download from my library.
jcpst··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
This is an interesting perspective to say the least. I’ve been impressed with the work their developer team has done over the years.

I can’t say I shared your troubles finding new music on there. It’s been the best place for me to discover new artists. The recommendation systems, following artists, and their unique write-ups on artists, scenes, genres are quality.

You’re take on what they ‘should’ be doing seems very misguided. I’m surprised that you think Bandcamp Pro is a hands-off marketing and promotion service. They are absolutely clear about what they offer for $10/month, and no where do they say they’ll promote your music for you.

They have provided an entire guide for _how_ to promote on bandcamp: https://bandcamp.com/guide

jcpst··on Recursive Recipes
Looks a bit half-baked.

The concept seems interesting. It seems like it’s missing too much information/behavior to explore in an interesting way.

jcpst··on Automakers invented the crime of jaywalking (2015)
Where I live in the US, people simply do not stop at pedestrian crosswalks. It doesn’t matter that there’s a large fluorescent sign, and bold white stripes on the road, and a person waiting to cross. I’ve even had a police officer drive straight through while I was waiting to cross.

But it seems like they’re respected if you install large flashing lights that the pedestrian can activate.

jcpst··on What Ghosting Says About Society (and Why It Hurts So Much)
This is the liberating side of ghosting.

When you have people in your life that make false accusations, manipulate, lie, and cannot be reasoned with, ghosting them can be a quality of life improvement.

It is quite a bit different than someone ghosting because they’re bored with someone. The conflict is already out in the open.

But otherwise, I’ve always given a reason. Whether they can accept the reason is up to them.

jcpst··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
My brother is looking at a new position that does 2d/week hybrid. He is thinking of laying it out this way:

    * * W R F
    M T W * *
So that he has wed to wed where he doesn’t go in.

Also some workers stagger their schedules and share rent on an apartment that is a “crash pad”, so they can live farther from the metro and then just commute for the two day office visit in one trip.

Pretty interesting seeing how people adapt to this.

I love how in other words you could also say “played with lincoln logs” :)
