jcoletti··on Google Chrome Labs' Container Query Polyfill
"A tiny polyfill for CSS Container Queries, weighing about 1.6kB brotli’d. It transpiles CSS code on the client-side and implements Container Query functionality using ResizeObserver and MutationObserver."
jcoletti··on Is the madness ever going to end?
"They constantly crash..."

Putting aside the downsides and reasons not to use Electron, this statement is just false. They are not "constantly crashing." I currently use at least Figma, Insomnia, Slack, Spotify, and VS Code and these apps rarely crash, if ever.

jcoletti··on Show HN: Privacy-first, minimal, fast blogging/newsletter platform
Timely post. Been evaluating newsletter services for a new project so may give this a try.

FYI – All of your site pages have the same title, or are missing page titles.

jcoletti··on Psychology of Design: 101 Cognitive Biases and Principles Affecting UX
"Every time users interact with products, they filter the information, seek the meaning of it, act within a given time, store bits of the interaction in their memories. So to improve your user experience, you need to understand the biases & heuristics affecting those four decision-cycle steps."
jcoletti··on Ask HN: What PostgreSQL client do you use?
Another vote for TablePlus. Really solid and support for tons of other DBs. Came from Navicat which crashed a lot. Pricing is way better too. They also make DBngin, a great free tool for spinning up local DBs in a clean, self-contained way.
jcoletti··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
Steve Jobs' explanation of the simple, obvious truth that the world is made up of everyone's contributions and how much power each individual person has to contribute and influence it too:

"Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is: Everything around you that you call life, was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know — if you push in, something will pop out the other side — that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it. I think that’s very important and however you learn that, once you learn it, you’ll want to change life and make it better, cause it’s kind of messed up, in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.”

jcoletti··on MacBook Pro 16 Has a Fan Problem
No such issues with MBP 16" here, unless of course there's a misbehaving process. I have noticed Catalina's new iOS device syncing can spin out of control if the device being synced disconnects or goes out of range before finishing. There's an "AMPDevicesAgent" or similar process that pegs the CPU at 100% when this happens and wreaks havoc on Finder, Music, etc.
jcoletti··on macOS no longer allows changing wifi mac address
Note that you will still see the original hardware address in System Prefs > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced, but ifconfig shows the changed MAC, which is indeed the one that is broadcasted
jcoletti··on Show HN: A stop-motion video of an engine
Very cool, well-shot video. As others have said, I was more interested in a detailed explanation of the inner-workings. After finishing the video and exploring others, I found my way to the video course preorder page. $20 paid! Great concept, best of luck. Plan to start watching this weekend.
