jcoder··on A complete rewrite of wiki as a single page application
It looks like each page a user navigates to is appended to the URL. I hope the team develops the notion of "browsing modes" with the option (on by default I would think) to use canonical URLs for a given page. Otherwise, a user trying to visit a bookmark at a later date will (1) wait for all prior pages in their browsing stack to load before the page they bookmarked, and (2) may potentially exceed a maximum URL length depending on how that particular wiki is served.
jcoder··on What taking my daughter to a comic book store taught me
Similar comics existed (and exist) growing up in the U.S., but they are less prominent in comic book stores, and more prominent in traditional book stores or the Sunday paper. E.g., Calvin and Hobbes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_and_Hobbes).
jcoder··on Reduction in Garbage Collection Pause Time in Ruby 2.2
> increasing connascence

Well, you're trading connascence of position for connascence of name, which in this case is much better because you are providing context for the argument data.

jcoder··on Why would someone steal the world’s rarest water lily?
> At the time, Kew possessed virtually the entire planet’s population of Nymphaea thermarum.

If preservation is the goal, maybe the plants ought to be spread around a bit. Sounds like the theft could be a net gain for the species (shrug)

> What a terrible article

Those are quotes from interview subjects, not editorialization. If the subject's opinion is horrible, you want that to show through in the article.

jcoder··on Show HN: Colorbars – A challenging new take on the match three game genre
Then don't upvote it. Asking that people prescreen their submissions to not offend your subjective definition of "interesting" or "informative", is introducing a chilling effect.
jcoder··on Poll: What OS do you use on your primary computer?
Their primary computer must be one of those.
jcoder··on DRM Coffee
It makes coffee? Seriously, same idea, but it's still newsworthy because it's a bad, bad, dangerous idea.
jcoder··on Happy ending: @N has been restored to its rightful owner
Makes sense, thanks.
jcoder··on Happy ending: @N has been restored to its rightful owner
Was his prior history as @N already lost at that point?
jcoder··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
Absolutely sincere, but pre-coffee as well :)
jcoder··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
Yes I agree with that. Sorry for not taking the time to make a coherent argument :)
jcoder··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
You may have missed my point, but that's probably my fault :P.
jcoder··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
What an incredibly important book for little boys, to normalize learning from women early on so they don't grow up to form stereotypes like "programming is for men". Bravo!
jcoder··on Octostalker
This seems really useful, but I don't think Github would approve of the Octocat usage: http://octodex.github.com/faq.html
jcoder··on Service lets you "certify" a document using the Bitcoin blockchain
> 3)...

"Your document will not be uploaded. The cryptographic digest is calculated client-side."

jcoder··on I don't care about your code challenge
I understand the desire for a challenge, but you might consider not submitting them. Effort goes into advancing a candidate's application at each stage, so someone out there is wasting their time so you can get your "good job!" boost.
jcoder··on Write (More) Effortlessly With Markdown
I had never heard of it until now, but now that I've seen Jade, it doesn't seem like a replacement for Markdown at all. I use MD to add semantics, formatting, and links to text. 99% of the Markdown documents on my computer will never be rendered as HTML.
jcoder··on The End of Coding
> Do you think he should have just said "sure man, sounds great, go for it!"

His friend would have made a lot of personal progress in their understanding and abilities.

jcoder··on Why Meteor will kill Ruby on Rails
What about long-term maintainability of a large application? Rails has its issues there, but a body of best practices has grown up around maintaining long-lived rails apps. I wonder what the author's opinion would look like were it building the single app that is core to their business, and maintaining it for 3 years, instead of spitting out a Meteor app for a client every 6 weeks?
jcoder··on The Workman Keyboard Layout
I've worked several programming jobs since switching to Dvorak, and it has never been an issue---it takes < 10 seconds to change the layout OS-wide. No need to request a special keyboard (and I leave my keycaps as QWERTY because I touch-type anyways).
jcoder··on Obamacare backend code?
...because Obama lived in Indonesia?
jcoder··on The shittiest project I ever worked on
Except the most successful political fundraising machine in history that ran on Jekyll [0] :P

A hand-drawn sketch of the planned UI would look less vaporwarey.

jcoder··on The NSA Is Breaking Most Encryption on the Internet
Considering what we've learned, anyone's definition of "appropriate measures" has probably changed.
jcoder··on Authy: Faster Two-Factor Authentication
There must be more to it. I have accounts for Google and Dropbox, using the same email, in Google Authenticator.
jcoder··on My self-published book on being a great developer
This comment is verbally abrasive. I find the site very clear, legible, and intuitive.
