jcdavis··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
Sounds like for the best for the economy (also presumably, never going to happen).
jcdavis··on Stripe sets one-year timetable to decide on going public
it can be done (via eg waiving the 2nd exit trigger and converting to common) but is pretty complicated
jcdavis··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
The messaging here is absolutely terrible, but I suspect most premium users will keep their subscription.

There was a similar uproar last time when they gated a bunch of popular features behind premium, but anecdotally it massively increased the subscribers among serious users (myself included). As long as they have a defacto monopoly in the social fitness space, serious users will pay.

jcdavis··on The science on why animal fat is good for humans
I'm sure a "carnivore diet thought leader" is a great source of nuanced, unbiased discussion about saturated fat intake /s
jcdavis··on Analyzing Carbon Dioxide levels while attending IETF-115 in London, UK
The Aranet has both temperature and pressure sensors, though how those are used as part of the CO2 calculation (if at all) I don't know
jcdavis··on AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
There is a light. The problem is if only 1 is charging, you'll still see the "charging" light while the other slowly loses battery.

I've dealt with this occasionally, from what I suspect is some buildup on the contacts due to sweat on my headphones from running. I find taking a cotton swap with alcohol to clean off the contacts every so often solves the problem.

jcdavis··on Porsche boss faces software woes keeping VW a step behind Tesla
Got a Mazda3 this year and the "no bullshit" infotainment stack was a huge selling point for me. Airplay integration using a knob is a little wonky in places (primarily interacting with maps), but I consider it a feature not a bug because I basically don't do any interaction I can't do via voice commands. Physical buttons for all climate etc, not a capacitive "button" to be found in the car.
jcdavis··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
IANAL, but have family & friends in biglaw

> Biglaw attorneys routinely bill 2200 hours a year in 6 minute increments.

A surprising portion of that work is random menial stuff, they don't actually end up doing 40hr/week of mentally demanding work.

> Plus, they do this into their 50’s.

The ones that survive to make partner do. But its well-known that BigLaw absolutely burns through associates. Very few BigLaw associates make it past 35, most eventually leave for saner pastures of corporate counsel/government/etc jobs.

jcdavis··on Only 6.8% of adults have optimal cardiometabolic health
> also means you're spending x times more of your productive years exercising

I'd strongly recommend finding some sort of physical activity that you enjoy, rather than seeing as a chore.

jcdavis··on Only 6.8% of adults have optimal cardiometabolic health
Only with acidic foods
jcdavis··on What should you do with stock options during a recession?
Yes, but grants that convert to NSOs after departure are possible. Worse from a taxation perspective, but better than losing them.
jcdavis··on What should you do with stock options during a recession?
Yet another reason not to join any startup that still does 90 day option expiration.
jcdavis··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
The dude was 100% cheating, but the internet vigilantism around this was awful. One of the many unfortunate side effects of the largest (english?) running forum being a glorified 4chan run by 2 idiots, one of whom then gets interviewed for this story with next to no discussion of how he enabled it
jcdavis··on Avoiding the top Nginx configuration mistakes
Serves static content (which envoy still can't do AFAICT)

Simpler to set up for a basic proxy.

For more complex usage though, nginx is certainly outclassed (at least the OSS version)

jcdavis··on HashiCorp – S1
Pretty standard for enterprise SAAS companies.
jcdavis··on Gitlab S-1
Absolutely agreed, but events like one-off secondaries can somewhat distort the numbers in that they put costs that should be amortized over many in years into a single quarter. You see similar at big cos 6mos after IPO when everything vests.
jcdavis··on Gitlab S-1
Was wondering why their FY21 costs where much higher than first half of this year, this probably explains it:

> Stock-based compensation expense for fiscal 2020 and 2021, and six months ended July 31, 2021 includes $32.7 million, $103.8 million, and $0.3 million, respectively, of compensation expense related to secondary stock sales described in Note 16 to our consolidated financial statements included elsewhere in this prospectus.

Which makes the numbers not as bad as they seem on first glance.

jcdavis··on AirPods Max one-month review: heavy, pricey and not worth it
IME: the quality/convenience/size of Airpod Pros very much justifies the premium over competing products.

Crucially though, the premium in this case is more like $50-$80, not $200

jcdavis··on Holiday Hacking – Tracking my heart rate while playing Call of Duty
I've tried chest straps once or twice and found them pretty uncomfortable, though its possible I would get used to it.

The advantage of these standalone optical sensors is that because they are smaller & lighter, and sit on the fleshier upper arm, they are much more accurate than sensors on a watch, despite being the same tech.

Edit: DC Rainmaker's analysis shows that these are more or less as good as a chest strap (https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/03/polar-oh1-plus-optical-h...)

jcdavis··on Holiday Hacking – Tracking my heart rate while playing Call of Duty
I looked into existing windows apps, there was only one extremely janky one that didn't do what I wanted, so of course I had to try and write my own
jcdavis··on Holiday Hacking – Tracking my heart rate while playing Call of Duty
(I'm the author, happy to see this getting re-posted)

I'm trying to figure out how to render a graph inline, but its more complicated

jcdavis··on Ask HN: Was 20% time a good policy for Google's working culture?
Thanks for the explanation, make sense.
jcdavis··on Ask HN: Was 20% time a good policy for Google's working culture?
Oh shit you created indieshuffle?

We're getting way off topic here, but I'm curious what your thoughts on the current state of the world on music blogging is. I was pretty big into following the music blog/hype machine scene in 2010-2014ish, and it seems like the other streaming services (particularly Spotify) have more or less killed that world with the exceptions of the biggest blogs, which seems pretty unfortunate to me.

jcdavis··on Leaked S-1 screenshots show Palantir losing $579M in 2019
1. They have in fact had "that much" funding, $2.6B according to Crunchbase

2. Likely their actual cashflow is not as bad - I suspect that, likely other tech cos, they have a lot of expenses in the form of stock comp, which is not an actual cash cost to the company. but must be accounted for per GAAP.

jcdavis··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
Without trying to sound too harsh, 50k monthly listeners really isn't all that much. You can argue that spotify's discoverability (or lack thereof) has a large influence on those numbers, but there are no shortage artists with many times that many that aren't all that widely known.
jcdavis··on The Unicorns Fell into a Ditch
> The actual nerdy economics joke there is in the second paragraph, which takes the form: Two economists are walking down the street. One of them sees a $20 bill on the ground. As she bends to pick it up, her colleague says “don’t bother, if that was a real $20 bill someone would have picked it up by now.” She replies, “no see this was left here by a consumer tech startup trying to maximize user growth; their Monthly Active Picker-Upper numbers are doubling every two months.” She picks up the $20 bill and the startup raises money at a $2 billion valuation.

jcdavis··on Applying to PhD Programs in Computer Science (2014) [pdf]
Only slighly related to the topic at hand, but the author (Mor Harchol-Balter) is an amazing teacher, she was undoubtedly my favorite professor I had the opportunity to take a class with at CMU
jcdavis··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever

jcdavis··on Grubhub stock halted after report Uber is eyeing a takeover
Ancedotally (I don't have a ton of concrete details here):

1. From what I understand restaurants doing delivery largely were breaking even on it considering the costs - there was no third party looking to take 20-30% of the gross.

2. Again anecdotally, I suspect the old school pizza/chinese delivery places are more efficient in terms of deliveries per driver per hour. What I see with a lot of UberEats/Grubhub etc is drivers waiting a lot at restaurants, bouncing around a bunch to pick up one or 2 orders each. Vs the old-school pizza model of a driver being able to pick up a bunch of orders at once.
