jccalhoun··on The immortality of Microsoft Word
Yes. Wordperfect was the favorite of lawyers for a long time.
jccalhoun··on Germany's train service is one of Europe's worst. How did it get so bad?
True. But it was my first time in Europe so I wanted the experience. If I go again I will probably fly.
jccalhoun··on Germany's train service is one of Europe's worst. How did it get so bad?
This summer I took a DB train from Amsterdam to Berlin. Being from the midwest USA, I didn't have a lot of experience with trains so I bought a first class ticket. The air and power in my car weren't working. There was no beverage car or service so we sat sweating to death. After a couple hours they gave in and told us to go to another car. Then at the next stop someone got on and yelled at me because I was in his assigned seat.
jccalhoun··on In New York City, congestion pricing leads to marked drop in pollution
Fox news.
jccalhoun··on The Joy of Playing Grandia, on Sega Saturn
For me, it isn't about not liking the story, but about having to watch a movie when I want to play a game. Don't show it to me. Let me do it.
jccalhoun··on Bad Dye Job
All things considered, this is a pretty mild pun. It isn't making fun of his name or replacing it with a slur or something.
jccalhoun··on Original Superman comic becomes the highest-priced comic book ever sold
For this, it is pretty legit since it is old. What is thought to be driven by money laundering is people paying crazy amounts of money for graded VHS movies or NES games.
jccalhoun··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
My conspiracy theory: Microsoft knew the Steam Machine was coming and decided to get out of the console market.
jccalhoun··on My friends and I accidentally faked the Ryzen 7 9700X3D leaks
Where did they lie? Someone posted some benchmarks. They reported on the appearance of benchmarks that indicate a new chip. Being wrong is not lying.
jccalhoun··on Visualizing the most common unisex names in the US
My friends from Poland adopted a female cat named Sasha and were adamant that Sasha was a male name.
jccalhoun··on Radiant Computer
I thought "is there one of those popups covering things and greying out the page until you close it?"
jccalhoun··on Grammarly rebrands to 'Superhuman,' launches a new AI assistant
This is getting to the antivirus bundle level of adding pointless features. I want grammarly to... check my grammar. I don't want it to write for me or suggest things.
jccalhoun··on Criticisms of “The Body Keeps the Score”
I enjoy If Books Could Kill and I used to like You're Wrong About when Michael was on it. However, I have found on If Books Could Kill that they sometimes take the least charitable interpretation of something to ridicule it when a more charitable interpretation might find that there is more nuance than they are presenting.

I haven't listened to Maintenance Phase because it isn't really a topic that I'm all that interested in.

jccalhoun··on GOG has had to hire private investigators to track down IP rights holders

jccalhoun··on Apple Vision Pro upgraded with M5 chip
If they thought the product was toast why would they bother updating the processor? It isn't like they update the processor in the mac pro regularly or anything.
jccalhoun··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
I'm glad you posted. When I hear masking described like it is in this simulator: "To keep your job and avoid conflict, you must "mask." Masking means hiding your natural habits and feelings, while imitating the social behaviors that coworkers expect.", I always think, "isn't that just life?" If I didn't hide my natural habits I wouldn't be going to work at all. If I didn't hide my feelings I would yell at the person in the office next to me for listening to some webinar through their computer speakers and their door open. If I didn't imitate the social behaviors that coworkers expect I wouldn't wish the person I barely know happy birthday.
jccalhoun··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
"A PM appears at your desk with an urgent ask that lacks acceptance criteria. "

I don't know what this means and I don't understand the first choice: Open a template and force crisp AC: "Given/When/Then"

jccalhoun··on Primer on FedEx's Distribution Network (2024)
Fedex is the worst. I live in a house with a wooden fence all around. The sidewalk goes to the gate to get to the front door. Once fedex delivered something to my back deck where there is no sidewalk.

My parents live in a rural area. Two story house with a clear front and back door. Fedex decided to deliver a package by putting it on the storm cellar door on the side of the house.

jccalhoun··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
Whenever I see people say Indiana is flat and boring I know they haven't been south of I-70.
jccalhoun··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
I bugged me too. I'm from Southern Indiana and when I hear people say "Indiana is flat" or "Indiana is boring to look at" all I hear them say is "I've only been to the Northern part of Indiana."

There is a lot to shit on Indiana for but its natural beauty isn't one of them.

jccalhoun··on The American Nations regions across North America
I agree. However, I will say that I always thought that Southern Indiana and Southern Ohio were more similar than Southern Indiana and Northern Indiana.
jccalhoun··on The day Return became Enter (2023)
About 5 years ago I was teaching a college class how to format something and I said, "then you just hit return" and most of the class didn't know what "return" was.
jccalhoun··on When the sun will literally set on what's left of the British Empire
Exactly. Isn't it strange that the Queen of England, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia ALL died on the same day? WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!
jccalhoun··on Bring Back the Blue-Book Exam
I was an English major and Math minor in the 90s and I used them for one class - a history general studies requirement. All the essay tests in my other classes were on letter sized paper with blank space for us to write in.
jccalhoun··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
jeepathon2k was peak CS.

Seriously though, I miss the VIP and hostage rescue modes. I guess hostage rescue is still there but hardly played.

jccalhoun··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
It was totally in my library when I was in high school in the late 80s but I was in a small school in the midwest.
jccalhoun··on Claude says “You're absolutely right!” about everything
I'm not a programmer but I have some stuff I want to do with python. So what I've found useful is taking the output of one LLM, Claude for instance, and giving it to another, Gemini for example, and writing "this is what claude thinks. Evaluate it..." Then if I have to I will take that result back to the first LLM and ask it to evaluate it.

It might just be in my head but it seems like they are a lot more critical that way than if I suggest something. ...Or maybe all of my suggestions really are great...

jccalhoun··on How was the Universal Pictures 1936 opening logo created?
Wikipedia says it was first marketed only 3 years earlier so it was pretty new https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poly(methyl_methacrylate)
jccalhoun··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
It will never happen. It is easier to cut budget than to raise it. It is easier to cut taxes than it is to raise them on the rich.
jccalhoun··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
Not bending the knee to Trump.
