jbredeche··on An Amazon Engineer Had a Little Idea That Turned Into a Billion-Dollar Business
is it webscale?
jbredeche··on Heroku Sandy Situation Room
Thanks for the clarification. Meant to say regions.
jbredeche··on Heroku Sandy Situation Room
"We recommend customers with production databases (Crane and up) create a follower running in us-west-2 using the --region flag (this is an alpha feature we are exposing ahead of schedule to prepare for this incident)"

Finally! Excited multi-AZ support is coming to Heroku.

jbredeche··on Github: Major Service Outage
Looks like github status is on heroku. It's loading fine for me:

  > host status.github.com
status.github.com is an alias for appid129905herokucom-760859479.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com.

jbredeche··on MongoHQ (YC S11) Raises $6 Million For Database As Service Engine
I've used MongoHQ in two companies now, and couldn't be happier with their product, uptime, and ridiculously responsive support (especially during late-night, crap-I-just-dropped-our-staging-database-by-accident-because-I-ran-unit-tests-on-the-wrong-environment routines). Very happy for their success so far, and looking forward to what they have in the pipeline.
jbredeche··on The Most Revealing Job Interview Question
Saw this in an article about Google from last year: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405270230491110457644...

About Sergey Brin: "I'm going to give you five minutes," he told me. "When I come back, I want you to explain to me something complicated that I don't already know." He then rolled out of the room toward the snack area. I looked at Cindy. "He's very curious about everything," she told me. "You can talk about a hobby, something technical, whatever you want. Just make sure it's something you really understand well."

Really like this. Covers a lot of bases in a single question, such as curiosity, depth, interpersonal skills, etc.

jbredeche··on Slides and video from Spike Brehm's tech talk: Building Single-Page Apps
Really enjoyed this talk. Good material and great presentation, thanks again!
jbredeche··on Grove isn't dead, it's only resting
We also moved to HipChat, but I prefer Grove. HipChat's AIR app is ok, but kind of clunky and has almost no customization options. Being able to use any IRC app with Grove was one of the biggest selling points for me.
jbredeche··on Announcing mails_viewer - easiest way to test mails in Rails app
We've been using letter_opener (https://github.com/ryanb/letter_opener), which handles the "preview" case very well (opens the rich text and plain emails in separate browser tabs on send). Doesn't do the other stuff that mails_viewer does, but a good lightweight alternative.
jbredeche··on How we make 5000 row tables fast in Streak
This is really great, thanks. Could you shed some light on the variable height row solution? Do you still use absolutely positioned rows, or do you do something different?
jbredeche··on Make Your Email Hacker Proof
I put a copy of the single-use backup verification codes into an alternate dropbox account I have (that isn't linked to my primary email address). Figured if I'm somewhere with enough internet access to get to gmail, I'll be able to get to dropbox.com and get the codes.
jbredeche··on Inside Votizen - Tech, Design, Culture
Love these posts, please keep them coming!
jbredeche··on Galaxy Nexus Review
Nice. As far as I know, this is the first time that Verizon has one of the flagship devices - so didn't know if they were to give this phone the same bloatware treatment as my Droid X.
jbredeche··on Galaxy Nexus Review
I might missed an announcement here - but will Verizon load their bloatware onto ICS, or has Google managed to get them to ship a clean Android installation on these phones?
jbredeche··on Facebook Timeline
Looks like a Flipboard of your life, plus you can customize its content for different groups of visitors. Glad FB is focusing on design, it looks beautiful.
jbredeche··on ~/.osx — a collection of sensible defaults for OS X Lion
If anybody else ran into the problem on OS X Lion where, even after turning on devmode on the Dashboard, you couldn't get widgets to show up on the desktop: first go to the Mission Control preference pane and uncheck "Show Dashboard as a space". Took me a while to figure that out.
jbredeche··on Git Is Simpler Than You Think
Great, entertaining writing style. Probably the most readable intro to Git I've ever read.
jbredeche··on Awesome Services We Pay for at HelloFax
We (www.kapost.com) also pay for:

- Geckoboard, which gives us a really easy-to-set-up dashboard for business metrics, system health, etc.

- Papertrail - fantastic log aggregation service, lets you easily manage, search, etc your logs from disparate sources. Their support has been super responsive as well, great guys.
