jbm··on Diatec, known for its mechanical keyboard brand FILCO, has ceased operations
I still have 4 of these, even one of their bluetooth ones. They all work, except a 15 year old one whose USB cable got frayed and fell apart. (I bought a USB-C port to see if I could fix it, yet another incomplete project)

I agree with op who said that they aren't getting better but calling it stagnant is more than I would say. The build quality was quite high and they clearly focused on that, and the price reflected that. I own another mechanical keyboard that I bought from Amazon during the pandemic and I already started getting ghost tapping (I only used it for dev work so I was more than a little annoyed to see it).

Not saying it is perfect though. They clearly were a Windows-first shop and that never changed. I've never managed to get the 変換 key and the other Kanji keys working in Linux or on Mac, much to my annoyance.

jbm··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Chronic absence numbers are misleading. We all know that they are just placeholder stats for other factors and we should focus on those.

My 3rd grade daughter was unlucky with various illnesses and missed about 12 days this year (so far). I got a letter from her principal attempting to guilt trip me for her "Chronic absence".

I wrote an angry response (in retrospect it was too angry since he had no choice about the letter) where I asked if he would prefer my sending sick children to school.

Her grades (for whatever value grades have in 3rd grade) are fine. I'll take the chance on her reading her "Diary of a wimpy kid" book when sick, or when a sane system would have given a snow day.

jbm··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
Dunno how it is in Germany but quite a few of my non white friends wound up in the Canadian Army.

I don't know why immigration is brought up in this conversation at all.

jbm··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
> We make plenty of stuff at scale. We just haven’t designed any of military around it since WWII.

When people claim that America is losing manufacturing jobs, you get the "Oh we produce high value products, mostly military".

Then you get posts like this. How is one to reconcile these ideas? Is Lockheed Martin the Ferrari of weapons?

jbm··on America Is Now a Rogue Superpower
Somewhat hilariously, the US adopted the same Wolf Warrior diplomacy.

Maybe public diplomacy is simply adjacent to local politics to the US. I still think this will backfire spectacularly over the medium term.

jbm··on America Is Now a Rogue Superpower
It's not just the EU, you can see these organizations in Canada and in Japan. For example, I watch youtube channels ostensibly created to discuss Japanese Real Estate (I'm thinking about Rakumachi) which suddenly pivot to posting American right wing talking points in Japanese on their shorts channel. (Their long form RE content is usually interesting)
jbm··on Folk are getting dangerously attached to AI that always tells them they're right
I don't know. Using Reddit mode like that is often a waste of time for me.

The LLM does pokes holes but often it is missing context, playing word games, or making a mountain out of a molehill. In a conversational chatbot setting it is just being contrarian, I don't find it helpful.

I prefer using the LLM to build out an idea and then see if it makes sense before asking someone else.

In the end though, I usually DO get pushback from ChatGPT and Claude. Gemini, not so much, but it is still worthwhile.

jbm··on Windows native app development is a mess
> 9 MiB

I'm glad people still care about stuff like this. It drives me insane that the simplest form-based software that I build and compile ends up being 50-100 MiB; several times video games from the 80s that I grew up with that did much more complex work, graphically and computationally, on a tenth of the space.

jbm··on How BYD got EV chargers to work almost as fast as gas pumps
Alberta is imposing a charge on EV registrations, and they increased it again this year. At some point I'm hoping courts curtail their attempt at imposing gas cars but given how Canadian courts are hamstrung at obvious human rights issues in places like Quebec, I doubt they will do anything about Alberta either.
jbm··on BYD's bet on EVs is paying off as drivers ditch gas amid rising oil prices
Cool cool they can pay more for gas then. As an Albertan I approve completely.
jbm··on Hollywood Enters Oscars Weekend in Existential Crisis
Side note - My 2019 Tesla Model 3 is worth 8000$. Canadian.

A rich person does not drive a Tesla.

jbm··on Things I Wish I'd Known Before Buying an EV
In this past year I've gotten 2 bills for more than 1500$ for my Tesla Model 3, a car whose trade-in value is between 5 and 9 thousand dollars.

When I complained, I was told that the parts are only produced by Tesla and are patented (true or false).

As I always say, I love the car but getting an old beater whose heat stops at the end of winter is no fun.

jbm··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
I mean I understand the argument that Europe is in decline economically (the argument is that the price of energy goes up therefore industrial production goes down). I don't understand anyone claiming European "culture" is in decline, unless you are comparing it to some pre-world war 1 era of world-wide dominance.
jbm··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
I agree with you. I also need to shout at the clouds on this because the experts who make the argument for time changes drive me crazy.

I live in Calgary. At a previous grade school my daughter went to, school started early enough that she left in pitch black conditions in winter, regardless of "experts" and their precious daylight savings time.

'You need sunshine when you wake up' is really a ridiculous argument, there is no sunshine even with DST.

Get rid of it. Maybe egg the houses of the "experts" too.

(As for my kids, thankfully, they did remote school during Covid (hence late mornings) and then I moved to a place where the school starting time was later than 8.)

jbm··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
> The EU is destroying itself both economically and *culturally*

I understand the former. Can you clarify the details around the later? I hear this often, but the people I hear it from are not the most trustworthy or the most knowledgable.

jbm··on Why isn't LA repaving streets?
Isn't this just the end result of larger and larger portions of budgets going to interest payments?

As a side note, this is actually akin to my favourite Slashdot troll.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kadin2048/Slashdot_Trolli...

> The Get Some PRIORITIES! troll began to appear after the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks. A classic offtopic troll, it employs highly hyperbolic language to criticize the other posters and Slashdot in general for discussing trivialities like new gadgets or changes in U.S. copyright law in the wake of such a horrific event. jbm··on Heroku is not dead
I previously deployed stuff to Salesforce when I ran a very large Asia-Pacific Salesforce org.

The previous way (prior to SFDX which was clearly influenced by Heroku) was terrible. 12 hour long deploys that end when one unit test times out-style terrible. No code history terrible. There is no way that Heroku was worse for integration.

Whether they could have replaced APEX with Heroku is a different issue.

jbm··on Rivian R2: Electric Mid-Size SUV
Underrated comment.

Everyone commented on the battery life for my model 3 in winter (which is annoying but not a huge deal). The problems with the bushings, the easily cracked (2500$) roof glass, and the lack of spare parts (not as bad as Rivian) were drowned out.

Love the car, but wouldn't have bought it for the price I paid (used) if I had known.

The R2 looks great but like you said, never buy a first year model.

(Unless it is the Honda 0 Saloon)

jbm··on "Hate brings views": Confessions of a London fake news TikToker
These people are everywhere.

Instagram serves me antisemetic content consistently with no way for me to downvote it. Likewise when it tries to rage bait me with islamophobic shit.

I do not engage or upvote other than taking screenshots and reporting. At this point I just don't open Instagram except for messages from friends

It is incredible that they literally fund selfish assholes to do this. What worse is that they will not reap the vile harvest.

jbm··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2026)
Building a workout Apple Watch app and a workout editor for the Mac. Just testing it on n=4 or 5 people right now and thinking about how to market it if I launched it.

jbm··on The first sodium-ion battery EV is a winter range monster
I thought the price differential was not going to happen as there was a serious drop in the price of Lithium over the past year; but I looked it up and the lithium price drop is more a 5 year trend, with the last few months having a sudden surge in the price.

jbm··on An Update on Heroku
Yeah I agree. I saw someone say that they were not in KTLO mode, but this seems pretty bad, especially considering it happening at Salesforce.
jbm··on NDP wants Carney to kill U.S. fighter jet contract in favour of Swedish aircraft
As a fan of Area 88 I agree with this completely.

jbm··on Xcode 26.3 – Developers can leverage coding agents directly in Xcode
I sometimes have to build code for the apple watch. Getting it to pair with XCode is incredibly frustrating and is the opposite of what you would expect.
jbm··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
My dad used to use this kind of dongle for a civil engineering program called 'Cosmos'. Just wild to see it, it was so annoying to because sometimes it would simply not be detected on our 80386.
jbm··on Finland looks to introduce Australia-style ban on social media
I remember reading the Montreal Gazette as a kid, with their lopsided takes on various issues (local and international) as a result of their "organic local" writers. The local talk radio (CJAD) was worse.

I much prefer Youtube videos and international media from multiple viewpoints to that world.

jbm··on Retiring GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini in ChatGPT
It's a growing market, although it might be because of shifting goal posts. I had a friend whose son was placed in French immersion (a language he doesn't speak at all). From what I was understanding, he was getting up and walking around in kindergarten and was labelled as mentally divergent; his teachers apparently suggested to his mother that he see a doctor.

(Strangely these "mental illnesses" and school problems went away after he switched to an English language school, must be a miracle)

I assume the loneliness epidemic is producing similar cases.

jbm··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
Certainly longer than that. I actually thought Tesla as an energy company made sense — sadly just an excuse to buy and shelve solarcity.
