jayd16··on Stop Making TUIs
That's an indictment of ssh workflows not GUIs.

RDP works fine but it's based on a full desktop experience. Despite having the technology, we don't have the ability to remote in and run a single graphical program in a single window with the same ease.

We need something as seamless as Parallels for remote remote apps. But I guess we just settled on web apps.

jayd16··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
Aha, the problem is you're asking for code that works.
jayd16··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
How does "people will uncontrollably eat if given the chance" turn into "there are no starving fat people".

You're right that obesity is not necessarily linked to overeating . How is this relevant to your original point? Isn't it a complete contradiction to what you were saying before?

The original post was hyperbolic to the point of nonsense and now it seems we're on a completely different topic.

jayd16··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
Anyone not living paycheck to paycheck is just constantly gorging on fast food?
jayd16··on Don't paste the AI, please
Yeah but this is like the folks who just pasted the first hit or the first SO reply without even reading it and that sucked too.
jayd16··on Don't Paste the AI, please
If people are not being clear, you can just tell them to dial that in too.

It's a false dichotomy to suggest the choice is either endless noise or no information at all.

jayd16··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Honestly? Is it even going to be a drop in the bucket? This push is from massive data needs. The amount of ram code uses becomes an even smaller percentage of the growing pool.
jayd16··on Composable Tests
IMO it seems kind of terrible.

You're not going to remember what tests "test 3" relies on. They aren't actually linear progressions 123. They will be "test this", "test that". If 3 fails you're going to want to immediately go and add all those asserts back to help you debug your assumptions.

The tests _will_ drift and that should be fine. Implicitly depending on other tests doesn't really get me anything.

jayd16··on Deus Ex creator Warren Spector is retiring from game development
Kojima games have only gotten more Kojima.
jayd16··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Any new fabs on the horizon or do the powers that be expect the music to stop sooner than that?
jayd16··on Incident with Github.com
LFS files sorta do need to be hosted. At least, it exists because full clones are untenable for many projects.
jayd16··on Protobuf has LSP support
You can do this but if it's too granular (like you have no concept of version compatibility) then it can heavily split your matchmaking.

Plus the headaches of keeping many out of date builds up to date enough to deploy.

Even if you don't care about in game compatibility, all your servers still talk to some centralized data store and that will likely want a single deploy that handles old clients

jayd16··on Protobuf has LSP support
Then players are locked out of multiplayer until they download a possibily large content patch.
jayd16··on Protobuf has LSP support
> video game space where struct versioning is not needed

Save files? Looser than exact version multiplayer?

jayd16··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
Doesn't last through undergrad in most cases. Mostly because you move a lot.
jayd16··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
If it's been through a move it just might.
jayd16··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
Is IKEA just a drop in for "cheap crap" in this analogy? It's not like all furniture is IKEA by a long shot.

I guess in terms of "IKEA is fine if you're 23" AI is fine for throwaway work.

jayd16··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
Even if that was true, you'd have to still prove it has emerged.
jayd16··on AI in drug discovery – what it is, where we stand and the path forward
Make the feature a per user list of flagged sources.
jayd16··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
People seem to be conflating loss of control and predictable outputs with management. Maybe that's intentional spin or just wishful thinking.
jayd16··on Soup Raiders goes native: What you gain by building your own game engine
Source is based on the Quake engine. A lot of those AAA games you're thinking probably are.
jayd16··on When Genius Fails: The Intellectual Arrogance of the AI Labs
Always wrong too.
jayd16··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
In a similar vein, does anyone know how to classify the kinds of problems that are being found?

Is it possible to build heavier traditional linting to catch whatever is being caught in a more deterministic way? It seems to me that would be far more efficient in the long run (even if the efficiency is only for the AI to know that aspect was already checked).

jayd16··on When Genius Fails: The Intellectual Arrogance of the AI Labs
Make sure to put that front and center on the website next time.
jayd16··on When Genius Fails: The Intellectual Arrogance of the AI Labs
A lot of sci-fi authors have published in their 20s.
jayd16··on What garbage collection actually costs
Did you "Agreed" your own blog?
jayd16··on What garbage collection actually costs
What engine do you recommend?
jayd16··on What garbage collection actually costs
So are you saying this cottage industry achieves success or the industry formed around an impossible task?

A cottage industry is built around making rocks look good too. Is that an indicator that games are good or bad at making rocks?

jayd16··on What garbage collection actually costs
Lots of ways but an obvious and generic answer is to use pooling.
jayd16··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
no, not like that at all.
