jayalpha··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
My email is not valuable enough for the US or the EU to put pressure on them. If you are so worried you have to encrypt your email anyway. A Russian hoster likely would not bend. Be advised that a Russian IP address does not help you to pass Spam filters...
jayalpha··on When George Soros Broke the British Pound (2014)
It does not matter if you use Germany or the USA.

iPhones or whatever gets produced in China, likely by Foxconn. Profit margins are small.

I iphones get sold to Apple HK, apple HK sells them to Apple US or Apple Germany for a huge mark up. iphones are sold in the US or Germany for a small mark up.

I don't know if this is apples setup but profits would be accrued in HK tax free. In the end it does not matter since.

On the balance sheet China or HK is exporting goods to the US or Germany but all the profits land at a US company - apple.

Amazon, Google, eba, Microsoft is big in Europe. Where do you see their products in the trade balance sheets? YOU DON'T. Microsoft is not shipping Windows CDs from the US to the UK or France or Germany.

The bottom line: While the huge trade deficit of the US is not healthy, it is highly distorted and probably much lower than you think.

"IMHO that sale wouldn't have any direct effect on USA trade balance and on USD supply/demand."

People buy stocks in the US. They buy them with US dollars. Why are they buying US stocks? Because these companies are highly competitive. Why are they highly competitive? Most pay hardly any taxes and their products don't appear in any trade balance sheet.

jayalpha··on Trains reach record speed in Beijing-Zhangjiakou test run
I don't think the Chinese would like this if you say they are selling "Siemens trains".

They claim to have developed the technology further. The joint ventures were terminated after the technology transfer.

"If Google wanted a fair play they would come with something akin to the Trade Mark laws built in house."

Said by someone who has no idea about trademarks. Trademark. For what class? For what country?

Most trademarks have only a few classes. So you may be allowed to sell stuff because trademark XYZ only covers shoes. You can't sell computers with "Apple" brand but nobody can forbid you to sell apple (to eat). Who owns a brand? Budweiser beer is owned by Budweiser USA but they don't have the trademark in most European countries. This would get extraordinary complex very quickly.

jayalpha··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
Al the options mentioned here are good.

Dell XPS ThinkPad Lenovo X1 Carbon

I use a Dell XPS with only 8GB RAM. This can be tight at times. I switched to Ubuntu based Bodhi Linux and I am pretty happy about it. The RAM footprint is very very low and the system is very snappy.

"Frankly, I don't see the point of any post-graduate degree in something that's neither specific nor complex."

This is a useless metric. I have a PhD in something that is specific and complex and never could find a job.

MBA is generic. It may not pay off but you can play in many fields.

jayalpha··on I just lost my wallet on the way home from work
Interesting approach. I would have the wallet given to the bank. The bank can't disclose the phone number of the customer but will be happy to give him a call and tell him he can pick it up in the branch.

I remember vaguely having given a wallet with some ID and a business card of a medical doctor to the office of the doctor. They will never disclose private information but will call the owner himself.

jayalpha··on Pharma companies continue to raise drug prices at rates well above inflation

jayalpha··on My Letter to the Editor of New York Times Magazine
The author in the NYT is a pilot.

"Unfortunately, in the case of the 737 Max, it seems that Boeing has built a plane with a fundamental aeronautical issue that it thought would be resolved by adding a new automated system. "

jayalpha··on My Letter to the Editor of New York Times Magazine
"No it isn't. It is a stable design. To claim otherwise misunderstands the term."

Well, then we just disagree on the term.

"Because the 737 Max had been outfitted with larger new engines that could cause its nose to pitch dangerously skyward" (Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/14/opinion/business-economic... )

I don't call this a stable design. You can crash every airplane (e.g. "stall") but the plane should not enter an unsafe flying mode during normal flying behavior. No good engineer would have chosen that design.

An airplane that can only be kept in the air with a computer must not be necessary unsafe. As far as I know the stealth bombers can only fly with massive computer help. But this must be a rational, conscious decision and the pilot must be aware of this. Not a quick fix to stick huge engines on a plane that was designed in the 60ies.

I can put a Ferrari engine in a Mercedes from the 20ies. And I am sure it will drive. But the car, the brakes, everything is not made for this combination.

It also depends on your definition of live.

The best broad test to look for life would be to look for an entropy source.

jayalpha··on Show HN: Imagededup – Finding duplicate images made easy
"The tricky part is the retrieval of duplicates, which on the same 10K dataset takes a few minutes"

"Doesn't sound too bad."

I doesn't? As a word of caution: If a 10k dataset takes a few minutes I would be careful how long 10MM pictures take. I predict it does not take 10MM/10k times a few minutes.

jayalpha··on Match.com Used Fake Ads to Swindle Users, F.T.C. Says
Well, why would I want a partner with the same interests? To share one or two, great. But I can learn much more from a person that is very different compared to me.

This is why I think this clustering based on interests was always bullshit on dating sites. And this is why people use Tinder now.

jayalpha··on Match.com Used Fake Ads to Swindle Users, F.T.C. Says
Well, I can pick up women in bars you would not believe it. I could just tell a story from last week. Even I don't believe it. :-)

But online dating is tricky. There may be people who can pull it off but for me the real world is easier. Also many women look good on pics but the pics are old or photoshopped.

jayalpha··on The Saudis Are Lying About Their Oil Production?
"Let’s do a thought experiment. Say the world’s proven oil reserves are 400 million barrels. And say world oil consumption is 20 million barrels a year, growing at 5 percent annually.

Question: when will earth’s oil reserves be 100 percent depleted?

OK, timeout. Before you grab a pencil and break out the scratch paper, I should warn you — the answer isn’t 14.2 years. Or 20.4 years. Or any other number of years.

It’s never."

https://medium.com/@andrew.chamberlain/why-well-never-run-ou...

jayalpha··on The Saudis Are Lying About Their Oil Production?
"Why? Why would it not simply stabilize at say 20% higher than now?"

How about 100 or 150%? Above 100 USD you may be able to afford gas. Many people can't.

"That is either word games or nonsense. People will keep extracting oil and there is only finitely much available at reasonable prices."

There are two points you ignore. Falling ROEI (return of energy invested) on energy invested. Good oil has a ROEI over 20 (over 100 AFAIK for the first wells long time ago). This is sinking. It is 1:2 ROEI for shale gas. At 1:1 if does not make sense to try extracting.

The same with money. Energy and money are interlinked. www.declineoftheempire.com/2012/01/wealth-and-energy-consumption-are-inseparable.html

Have a look of the money invested for further exploitation by big oil companies. Constantly sinking. The problem is you need high oil prices to justify investments. At the same time running an economy above 100 USD for oil is tricky. People can simply not afford it. Maybe you can, again, many people cant.

jayalpha··on The Saudis Are Lying About Their Oil Production?
"There is a very large amount of oil production on hold or at low capacity in North America because the prices are currently too low and very much expected to go higher in the future."

You realize that this is the clusterfuck? no? We are looking to a Jojo effect. Oil prices too high? Recession. Oil prices too low? Oil producers can't afford to invest and produce (what is already happening now).

This is actually the reason why we will never run out of oil. No kidding. I assume most of the oil will stay there, where it is. In the ground!

jayalpha··on Suicide Data Reveal New Intervention Spots, Such as Motels and Animal Shelters
"Our current world mostly doesn't have effective solutions for mental health issues. "

This is not true. "Mental health issues" may be a broad field. I guess US prisons are full of such people, some beyond repair. But I know people who got hospitalized because of health issues and they are doing quite well today.

There is help. There are medications and things can normalize.

I have a friend who developed mental issues and, as far as I know, is roaming homeless in Canada. But this must not be the rule.
