Oh, and by the way,

you're fired.

Fired?

W-W-What do you mean,

fired?

Um, how else

can I say it?

You're being let go,

your department's

being downsized,

you're part of

an outplacement,

we're going in a

different direction,

we're not picking

up your option...

Take your pick.

I got more.

CSCI 4330: Software Cotillion Class

Learn the group etiquette during meetings for task assignment and interacting with supervisor authority.

Emphasizes being respectful and polite, with lessons on manners like handshakes, greetings, and helping others.

Cotillion classes often culminate in a formal backlog grooming and lessons-learned where students display their learned skills.

javier_e06··on Wasp Blower
I wish I had the was blower 3 months ago. Wasps nested in the space between my laundry room and the 2nd floor. The exit was a crack between the concrete blocks outside wall and the vinyl siding. They found an entrance into the house through the overhead light socket when a fool whose name shall not be mentioned duck-taped their regular exit route. A call to the pest-control and $400.00 USD later took care of it. They bore a tiny hole next to the exit and pumped lethal gas in it. The problem with the was blower in my case it it would have to be 8 ft attached to the wall.
javier_e06··on If you are harassed by lasers
My backyard neighbor installed a backup generator with a very annoying green led that shines right through my kitchen window. I hate HOA's and I don't live in one but I really lost sleep about this. One night I just went a back there and put a small green sticker on the plastic case. Still shines on but the annoying glow shines elsewhere. Inspection passed.
javier_e06··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
I see Pull Requests and Code Reviews the same way as making a sandwich for someone else. My team wants for me prepare a sandwich ASAP.

They, the reviewers, have to eat it, not me.

Some reviewers want wonder bread bread with a slice of spam.

Some want hand-made spreads with home-grown vegetables.

Is easier to fix a sandwich than a wedding cake.

The take-away

Don't do wedding cakes.

javier_e06··on GNU Midnight Commander
Ah Norton Commander. It sure throws me back to the Intel Pentium days. Today for that left versus right birds eye view, just-do-it, operations I use beyond compare.
javier_e06··on Robert Redford has died
Indeed. I read that movies like "The Blair Witch Project" and "Napoleon Dynamite" got their break at Sundance.
javier_e06··on "Your" vs. "My" in user interfaces
I hear you ( I am not an LLM ). I can't deny that the "You are absolutely right" gives me a shot of confidence and entices me to continue the dialog.

I am being manipulated.

I prefer the machine to reply:

Affirmative.

Unfortunately this billion dollar LLM enterprises are competing for eyeballs and clicks.

javier_e06··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
Having to sit in the car, train, or even walking can be seen as a punishment when the 80% to 890 of your work is done sitting by yourself in front of a computer.

At the office there where those who clearly wanted to minimize human interactions and people who thrived and performed better when interacting with others.

And then there is liminal spaces (Severance) the place where hope and creativity comes to die.

I use AI to solve problems, not to check the weather or deciding what to wear. As such it makes sense for AI to remember when it hits the nail on the head.
javier_e06··on Florida lawmaker floats ban on HOAs amid growing backlash
VISA cannot sue me for not paying my cc. It can ruin my credit history but it cannot sue me. Wells Fargo cannot sue me for missing mortgage payments, It may repo the house but not sue me. If HOA's can sue a home owner for breach of contract, who would like to live with that hanging over their heads.

javier_e06··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
My 3 rules of a TODO list ( a txt file obviousl ).

1. Done in the morning before starting work. Helps to take glance at yesterdays todo before it. 2. It only covers task achievable at the end of the day. Gets updated through the day with twists and turns and possible completion notes. 3. Very important! It gets evaluated at the end of the day: pass-fail.

The goal is not to pass or fail at the end of the day, is to help tomorrow's todo list creation.

Done diligently. Sharpens my brain.

javier_e06··on What would an efficient and trustworthy meeting culture look like?
Nobody knows, he gets invited to every meeting and ask stupid questions, I heard he is a consultant, can't confirm, he works on the other building, corporate.
javier_e06··on What would an efficient and trustworthy meeting culture look like?
The human brain hates meetings. It sees people. Tall, short, poorly dressed, overly dressed, it sees the sittings arrangements, someone with the arms crossed, someone is laughing, wait, are we here to talk about technical issues? They want answers now? Why now? Someone is not happy, why? Someone has a question, is Dan, probably something obvious..

That is not how the human brain works. To believe a creative mind is in problem-solving mode when sequestered into 1 hour or 30 minutes social gathering is bizarre. The best technical interactions I've seen happened randomly at a lab when everybody else has left for the day or while at hike chat on a trail during lunch time.

javier_e06··on Tao on “blue team” vs. “red team” LLMs
In cybersecurity red and blue test are two equal forces. In software development the analogy I think is a stretch, coding and testing are not two equal forces. Test is code too, and as such, it has bugs too. Test runs afoul with police paradox: Who polices the police? The Police police the police.
javier_e06··on How to Firefox
Firefox is all that.

Except on my arm-based crhomebook. There it gets confused and do not resize properly thinking is in phone format.

Also cast to chromecast is a no-go.

If it wasn't by those 2 issues I would have ditched chrome long time ago.

I travel with an HD antenna (the plastic square that attaches to a window). I arrive to the airBnB, I connect my antenna program the Roku crap TV to real Live TV. I was saddened when I find out the French Open sold-out to cable TNT for the next 10 years. I rather watched Fraiser re-runs that any cable TV.

javier_e06··on How to build Intrinsic Motivation: a review of the science
Video gaming seem to be down this alley on the study of self-motiviation.

Some games are made to burn time, like Thumper.

Some games are made to burn you neurons like Baba is You.

Minecraft has 2 modes. Creative and Zombie. Both equally powerful incentives.

I try to keep the plasticity of my brain. Not to let it crust and crumble like Play Doh left outside the tub.

javier_e06··on Vim Language, Motions, and Modes Explained (2023)
I just discovered the relative number after all this years counting lines to yank. OMG. This guy I am talking has that feature up but the relative number in the gutter but also, as he scrolled up and down, the number showing the actual line number was a bit bigger and different color. Maybe he was using neovim? I don't like to highlight the whole line where my cursor is. Its too distracting. But if the cursor non-relative line number in the gutter was bigger or different color, it would be big difference.
javier_e06··on Vim Language, Motions, and Modes Explained (2023)
The dudes in the https://ytch.xyz Programming channel display their vim editors with all kind of plugins that make me jealous. Pure fireworks. There is a plugin feature that enhances the line number where your cursor is located in the leftmost column for line numbers and looks super cool. I wish I knew the name of that plugin/feature since I don't want to go into the trial an error.

I also use the vim plugin for Eclipse and MS Code in my Linux boxes.

Yet, when the shit hits fan ... its vim-console time baby!
