jasonmaydie··on [dead]
Come on.. he was a 19 year old college student.. and he wasn't wrong.
jasonmaydie··on The woman who saved Stephen Hawking's voice and gave the tech to those in need
Someone clarify because I'm confused. I thought there were newer alternatives with better hardware but Hawkings wanted to keep his old system. How does giving way his system help when there are better implementations out there?
jasonmaydie··on Apple Music now has 38M paid members
That will depend on the definition of paid wouldn't it? It could just mean "we have 38M credit cards" we can bill.
jasonmaydie··on Security Researchers Publish Ryzen Flaws, Gave AMD 24 Hours Prior Notice
They had all the marketing material available and ready to go (and I bet that took more than 24 hours to make). The 24 hr notice is just an out against the usual accusation of publishing an exploit without giving notice. They sure well knew AMD couldn't even verify it in 24hrs, allowing them to get the full publicity while coming off as a reputable security firm.
jasonmaydie··on Cora – Kitty Hawk's prototype air taxi [video]
The two words you need when making a justification is reliable and safe. It won't matter how innovative and energy efficient it is if it doesn't meet the above requirements. If the osprey taught as anything, flying unconventionally is hard.
jasonmaydie··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
The real solution is making blatant lies and misinformation illegal.
jasonmaydie··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
I would argue we don't need to detoxify the internet, stopping trolling is missing the point however we should stop the spread of misinformation, in fact sites like reddit and facebook rarely create information, they just consume it blindly without questioning the source
jasonmaydie··on Failed intercept at Dhahran caused by a software error in handling of timestamps
How so? The implication you and the article are asserting is that the clock error caused their deaths.. rather than the more accurate description "could have prevented death".
jasonmaydie··on Failed intercept at Dhahran caused by a software error in handling of timestamps
The scud missile lead to their deaths, not the software. There's no absolute guarantee it would have intercepted it, plus rebooting a deployed machine regularly is an acceptable fix when it's live in the field
jasonmaydie··on Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself
> Wait a second. I was in a business relationship with Google.

Didn't take me long to realize that most company events and get-togethers and volunteering and other assorted non business activities are bullshit and a complete waste of time.

Like he said.. "it's a business relationship"

jasonmaydie··on Life Exists in the Driest Desert on Earth. It Could Exist on Mars, Too
if your definition of life is that broad then God could also exist
jasonmaydie··on California to allow testing of self-driving cars without a driver present
basically they can build a living room or office that drives around without it looking like a traditional car.

I think the whole self driving thing is an inefficient way to move people tho

jasonmaydie··on Automated Vehicles Can't Save Cities
cities don't exist in a vacuum. Many towns die because something essential like a coal mine was removed from the economy, just like removing cars (no matter how noble) could kill some cities too.
jasonmaydie··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
Why would they freak-out when an increasing number of cars are going to be on the grid?
jasonmaydie··on Stanford, USC, Duke study shows AI can read contracts better than lawyers
I find it weird that whenever AI comes up, it's not to help but to replace.
jasonmaydie··on When baby monitors fail to be smart
why does a baby monitor have to go through the cloud? you aren't supposed to be more 0-50 feet from your baby.
jasonmaydie··on I don’t understand Graph Theory
For the longest time I couldn't understand electrical theory, until a youtuber explained it very simply... It won't move unless it can see a path to ground, except you make it do all the work while it's attempting to ground.

That's all it took for the theory to fall into place.

jasonmaydie··on Measuring the Tendency of CNNs to Learn Surface Statistical Regularities
I think the real question that needs to be asked is.. does predicting things mean the same thing as learning? CNNs can predict fairly well but do they actually learn? This paper says no.
jasonmaydie··on It Was Bad UX, not a “Wrong Button” in Hawaii
I'll put this is the same bucket as "my code is my comment"
jasonmaydie··on It Was Bad UX, not a “Wrong Button” in Hawaii
Developers don't design. They implement.
jasonmaydie··on It Was Bad UX, not a “Wrong Button” in Hawaii
I think we should be making a lot of effort to prevent this kind of event than to prepare for this kind of event. It was a blessing in disguise indeed because it made people realize that talk is cheap and showmanship really can lead to some horrible outcomes.
jasonmaydie··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
Or he could just go to his local post office and get a box and ship it there.
jasonmaydie··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
> "It's the most work we have ever done in our life" (and I build startups!)... "We got no sleep last night, she woke up at 2 AM and wouldn't go back to bed."

what do people expect when they have babies? that it will take care of itself? There's a thing called Postpartum Depression that is real and usually occurs right after having kids. Raising babies are hard but once they become toddlers it gets far easier. I don't have sympathy for anyone who complains about not getting enough sleep in the first 6 months.

I was watching The Walking Dead at 1am in the mornings because baby woke up and had to feed him till he slept again. Oh and then right to work at 8am for almost 2 months. He's 3 now and now attempting to wipe his own ass for a change.

You're a parent, deal with that responsibility.

jasonmaydie··on A Type of Road Junction that Kills Cyclists
I still don't understand this comment. A stop sign a simple 100$ fix to the problem but we hate stop signs so...
jasonmaydie··on Introducing the new SourceForge
I hope they got rid of the guy who suggested bundling installers
jasonmaydie··on Kodak shares up as it announces KODAKCoin cryptocurrency
Prepare for the blockchain gold rush
jasonmaydie··on Kodak shares up as it announces KODAKCoin cryptocurrency
isn't this the main problem with digital currencies? it's easy to make one
jasonmaydie··on Byton unveils futuristic ‘smart’ car
I didn't say it should be free. But they have one of the best assets.. location and space.
jasonmaydie··on Byton unveils futuristic ‘smart’ car
how is this any different from the giant ipad in tesla models?
jasonmaydie··on Byton unveils futuristic ‘smart’ car
The walled garden charging network looks like it may be a problem in the future, why hasn't an independent entrepreneur started setting these up and charging money for them? Why haven't gas stations caught on to provide 1-2 charging stations?
