doctors kept pitching tonsillectomy to me; i'm just hesitant of the knife :(

glad it was just poor hygiene :P

i got a "dumb" sony one, the runt of its laser line but 5+ years later i havent changed it nor anticipate i'll need to, nothing better looking than hdr10 exists anyway, and the laser projectors are easily visible even in daytime with basic curtains down

after i switched to washing my hands with antibacterial soap (the orange kind they use in hospitals), i've gone from a bimonthly cold-analog disease to maybe being sick twice a year

there seems to be at least one service that your LLM can find if it searches the internet (e.g. in my case "best rental API") that poisons your context into thinking that that one service is the definitive and only available API for that data

yup that sounds like a substack :P

aren't worth the tax: no matter how high you set the tax, it won't offset the amount you have to spend on rehabilitating the effects of the vice

legality itself never stopped a vice from being indulged :) it's the cost / benefit that brings back repeat customers and encourages addictive behaviors

jareklupinski··on 9th Circuit sides with states in Kalshi gambling fight
after the first fifty years? :)

biological organisms develop addiction much faster than political processes

jareklupinski··on 9th Circuit sides with states in Kalshi gambling fight
> companies need to pay 40-50% of their gross revenue to the government. That's comparable to tobacco.

taxing a vice is worth it on paper, but the second-order effects (nonstop alcohol ads, pervasive gambling app dark patterns) aren't worth it imo

jareklupinski··on M5Stack Launches PaperMono
as long as they include a schematic for their products, i'm set

i've always viewed m5stack / seeed / tindie as 'dev board marketplaces'; once i proof the rest of the design using their board, i take the known-working schematic and simply cut out the parts i dont want to spin rev 2, then once that is working i optimize the remaining parts for rev3, and project done :)

jareklupinski··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
wild attempt: try to put your hand behind your back: are you aware of "where" your hand is, even though you cant see it?

now if someone taps on one of those fingers on that hand behind your back, could you put that same finger down (curl it) without seeing which finger was tapped?

lastly, could you open your hand, put it back in front of you, and put down the same finger that was tapped when they were behind your back?

it's the same way with my mental images; i'm aware the object exists and ive seen it before, so i can "see" them again in the same headspace to do things like analyze angles between molecular bonds, in the same way i can "feel" things that i'm recalling (i was tapped on this finger, i am putting this finger down (i dont think "right index finger" or anything...consciously? i just remember how the touch impulse felt and 'replay' it))

jareklupinski··on The broadcast squeezeback, rebuilt with CSS Grid and WebVTT
> I'd seen that effect a bajillion times without really looking too hard at it. It's just what television does. But during one of my infamous 2am can’t-sleep iPhone research sessions, I learned it actually has a name: a squeezeback.

reminded me why i love hanging out with media folks: TouchDesigner helped me bridge tech and interactives in the best way, letting them tell me exactly whats going on in their head using their flows and lingo, and i can fast-feedback their designs iteratively while theyre in the room

i'll give it a shot: you and i meet and start to talk about the weather, then slowly get to some personal questions, and i mention that i prefer quieter places when talking to people.

later, when going out with friends, if i ask "where should we go to talk", and you suggest someplace obviously loud and not great for conversation, this could be seen as a mild form of misunderstanding something i communicated previously about a personal preference in a given situation: breaking rapport

jareklupinski··on Being ambitious and being a dad
it's definitely a multi-axis thing :)

Aladdin makes me sympathize with stealing to feed your family, though The Protomen helped me place a balance between sacrificing for your family and working for personal ambitions
