jarek83··on Git rebase, what can go wrong
I'm maintaining few projects and had really bad experience with rebase - it's about making sure that everyone in your team does rebase well and according to team rules, but it's just one mistake away to get into some drama, which I had been through few times. Once rebase has been disallowed, I never had to solve similar issues again.
jarek83··on Git rebase, what can go wrong
"Don't make me think" has been the best principal of coding for me for a long time. Looking at how much thinking overhead rebase is producing, I'd prefer to avoid it.
jarek83··on Show HN: Puck – Open-source visual editor for React
Alternative meaning - Polish city nearby me :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puck,_Poland
jarek83··on Klack – Satisfying sound with every keystroke
Well, I would say that the reason is not the sound per se, it's the inability to turn off the sound. This software solves that.
jarek83··on Amazon acquires Fig
Interesting - I tried Fig for few days few months ago, it gave me more headaches than relief so uninstalled it. Surprised that it made into a viable product and shocked it actually got acquired.
jarek83··on Things you forgot (or never knew) because of React
One thing that became apparent to me after evaluating amount of complexity/work/team needed to maintain React projects compared even to Vue (but the difference is even more striking with more backend backed projects) is that - it is very often way cheaper to not to use React.
jarek83··on Privatisation has been a costly failure in Britain
One good thing is that homeowners, don't really have to pay for water in the UK - it is not possible to cut off a non-paying customers. Also, once your water bill debt grows, the debt is sold to a collector company, that have little power in the UK, so you just need to ignore threatening mail and you'll be good. I've practiced it for 5 years, I'm not too proud of it, but the water bills were a crime in the other direction.
jarek83··on The great Polish Sea or We forgot Poland (2006)
I believe that a reason why nobody reported it earlier back then, could be that most of computers had pirate version of Windows, and also, Internet was just starting to get wider adoption.
jarek83··on Ericsson to WhatsApp: The Story of Erlang
Aside from the main article, I find it very convincing marketing strategy to announce a continuation of the subject in next chapter that will be paid. I could already see the quality of the authors and I feel like I want to pay now to read more. I'm all in for this kind of marketing.
jarek83··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
With M2 on board and other silicon chip it actually is a computer, not to mention it comes with its own OS.
jarek83··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Name with "Pro" in it already, might suggest lower-tier versions coming in some future?

Device looks promising, and I wonder if they plan to allow 2 devices to show the same content simultaneously to say watch 3D movies with someone else in the same room.

Some say $3499 is a high price, but being able to carry huge design studio with you is heck of a value to me.

jarek83··on Ask HN: What's your favorite GPT powered tool?
3.5 vs 4 is like day and night. Try to get you impressions on v4
jarek83··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
I quit using booking after finding out it's usually much cheaper to book with the host directly. It's not always possible and some convenience that booking.com provides is gone, but I usually prefer to use the saving for included breakfast.
jarek83··on Databricks Releases 15K Record Training Corpus for Instruction Tuning LLMs
Can someone help me to understand why categories for these two differ?

row #51 "Think of some family rules to promote a healthy family relationship" - brainstorsming [1]

row #68 "What is the future for human?" - general_qa [2]

In nature they both are brainstorming to me - does the question mark is what assigned the #68 as _qa?

jarek83··on The LLama Effect: Leak Sparked a Series of Open Source Alternatives to ChatGPT
Look at my previous comment about a city without a Zoo.
jarek83··on The LLama Effect: Leak Sparked a Series of Open Source Alternatives to ChatGPT
I guess debugability will be its most desired feature soon. Let's see what copyrights will do with it.
jarek83··on The LLama Effect: Leak Sparked a Series of Open Source Alternatives to ChatGPT
>> But since you wish to draw a line in the sand, define quality. Or truth.

I asked it about tourists attractions in a city I know. One of the items it listed was a Zoo. There is no Zoo there. It seemed like it just took the majority of the question into account at some point and ignored the city name itself and since most questions like that are about big cities that have zoos, it went ahead to suggest it, since it was among probable answers.

It will get better with more input and will get this kind of obvious questions right. But I believe it will never truly 'know' what it is talking about. And we will start to believe it does.

GPTs are parrots. v4 is much better but still just a parrot. Since humans have yet to figure out the whole process behind brain thinking/intelligence/abstractions, then there is no way they can replicate that into machines. And brain is all about chemical reactions - can that be replicated with just 0s and 1s?

Sad fact is that many people will think GPT writes something meaningful, while it will always only write something probable. We will be flooded with content that will get harder and harder to prove wrong, but it will be wrong.

jarek83··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I had few ideas now and then, but I kept always thinking about one step that held me back - how do I get the right T&C and Privacy policy? Need to mention I'm from Poland and I guess it must be way different by law standards than it's in the US - take the GDPR alone but then a lot of hassle with local tax office... It just seems quite costly to just try an idea.

What should I do to get it right? Is it possible to get an US or other entity just to be able to have some kind of relaxed paperwork?

jarek83··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
So if I leave Facebook, they will allow others to claim they are me? The only way to protect is to actually have an there account and pay Meta? I mean - are they serious?
jarek83··on Self hosting in 2023
For me google no-tool (as it often is just random score) shows 88/91 for the page. On subsequent run it's 95/100 though.
jarek83··on Show HN: MrScraper – A visual web-scraping tool
Basic question before I can recommend this to my boss: can it scrape G2? (or any other page behind CF)
jarek83··on Show HN: I made a tool that turns screenshots into dramatically angled photos
Small feedback regarding the landing page - first few impressions I got were the same - it is a paywalled article page, it wants me to pay first to read about how 'dramatically angled photos' can look like. I almost left the page without realising it's a product page itself.
jarek83··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Funny, all my dentists always urged me to do morning brush after breakfast. It seemed to correlate to "brush after each meal" thing.
jarek83··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
I'd go old schoolish-ish with Rails with Turbo or Phoenix LiveView (both with PSQL) + maybe some CF Workers.

We see no reason to use extensive front-end as it has only downsides now - it loads longer, it exponentially balloons stack, it requires to hire front-end guys, it is not needed anymore for DOM manipulation.

jarek83··on Salesforce, but for Dating
SalesForce is business - leaking business data is not that problematic. This, is about storing extremely delicate information about people. It better has top notch protection against data breach massive fines will be coming soon.
jarek83··on Apple Silicon Mac’s have 2-3 times longer battery than PC laptops
Using M1 Macbook Pro for year and a half. It's great, it's quiet, it's not getting hot and the keyboard has been reverted to a great one (comparing to previous model). Silence when I work is something I have been unaware of how precious it is - because none of my previous machines were able to be silent ever before.

Doing a lot of web-dev with docker desktop. I can't think of a flaw - it's not it does not have any (like it could be better for occasional gaming), but compared to other setups available on the market, it's just flawless.

jarek83··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
It sounds like you'd enjoy academic/research programming. Programming for business does not seem to suit you.
jarek83··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
I'm 40 too and haven't felt more sharp in coding anytime before. However I started to code in my early 30s so maybe it contributes here somehow. It sounds like the task you have is a misfit for you or the code you have been given is way worse than you think.
jarek83··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
