jaredsohn··on Ask HN: What are the best tools to set and track personal goals?
Having a very fast UX for data entry seems like the most important requirement for me to ensure I'll actually track stuff and not feel distracted. Opening / editing a spreadsheet or some app just takes too long and if it is an app it forces me to think in its paradigm.

So I set up a global hotkey on my mac via icanhazshortcut that opens/generates a text file in Sublime Text with the current date in the filename and set up a hotkey within the editor to insert a timestamp. I've established a syntax that's basically [keyword] [number] that I can use for tracking food calories, fitness, etc. I can record I ate a couple of yogurts via just two keyboard shortcuts and typing 'yogurt 2'.

And now I'm building an app that reads and processes those files and puts stats in a database or exports to some app for analysis (just the former for now).

Or just collect mp3s? I'm guessing that at least happened while prototyping. And it seems like the most efficient way to make the service work in that era so it wouldn't surprise me if that data got used in production initially while handling licensing concerns separately.

This is where having your own email domain with unlimited accounts is useful.

No, that just happened a moment ago. :)

I am familiar with the concept; just not familiar with it as an acronym.

I don't think the GP was arguing with you; was the poster's first comment on this article.

That's dynamic pricing.

And it must be a side hustle so the Easter Bunny has something to do year-round.

jaredsohn··on Why we're sticking with Ruby on Rails
If you don't have static typing, you just need to make sure you have good test coverage. I work in ruby/rails and don't run into this problem.
jaredsohn··on Swag in the Tech Industry
>everyone likes bottle openers

I have no use for one. Haven't opened a bottle in a few years now. And maybe have done so at most 30 times throughout my life. (Don't drink soda and rarely drink alcohol.)

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: Why does WWDC get 10x more views than Google I/O?
FWIW, a lot of Google Maps came through acquisitions, too. But I think Google gets credit in this context for AJAXifying it and integrating tech/data with it in category-defining ways.

"Google Maps began as a C++ desktop program developed by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen at Where 2 Technologies. In October 2004, the company was acquired by Google, which converted it into a web application. After additional acquisitions of a geospatial data visualization company and a real time traffic analyzer, Google Maps was launched in February 2005.[2] The service's front end utilizes JavaScript, XML, and Ajax. Google Maps offers an API that allows maps to be embedded on third-party websites,[3] and offers a locator for businesses and other organizations in numerous countries around the world. Google Map Maker allowed users to collaboratively expand and update the service's mapping worldwide but was discontinued from March 2017. However, crowdsourced contributions to Google Maps were not discontinued as the company announced those features would be transferred to the Google Local Guides program."

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: How can I use money to make money?
Pay for interview practice, resume review, etc. or take a class to learn a new skill.
jaredsohn··on Ask HN: How do Robocallers know where I’ve been?
> However, a simpler explanation is that they have a pool of numbers and call you from the one with the prefix most similar to yours.

This doesn't work if you just traveled to Texas since your number wouldn't have changed.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: Do you have a guide on how to use feature flags?
The easiest way to do it is to create environment variables and check against them in code. This allows turning on / off functionality globally. Systems like AWS and Heroku allow toggling them without redeploying.

You can also create features that apply to individual users or if enterprise then to all users in the customer. This can be done by creating some boolean fields in the database (using a single feature_flags json field is recommended because then you don't have to change the schema every time a new feature flag is added.)

And then in code you check against the environment variable or against the user / customer before running changed functionality via a simple if statement.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: Anyone use GitHub Issues at their company?
For integration with non-engineering teams, a good idea is to create a separate repo that just contains issues to reduce how many people have access to the code. You can still link to prs from your code repo(s) within the issues and they can be closed automatically when the pr is merged.

jaredsohn··on How to use undocumented web APIs
Yes, SPAs aren't required but they make it more likely that the site will use AJAX to request data instead of rendering the page with server data PHP-style.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: How do you get notifications for comments on HN?
And the caveat for the former is that you are linking your email with a username when you sign up for the service. It doesn't guarantee it is the same person and doesn't affect people whose username is their name and the email can be found via other means, but it can affect people trying to be more anonymous.
jaredsohn··on Do Not Log
>Except now you’re tied to Sentry. Want some other service? Good luck.

If this is a concern, just create a class with a method that takes an exception, message, context, etc. as parameters and use that. Now you can change it in one place instead of throughout your codebase.

Agree on logging messages as well; is useful to see live what is happening in the system as well as it is useful to see logging broken up by different errors

jaredsohn··on No code reviews by default
> to fail miserably on the big launch

What big launch? :) Is useful to feature flag new functionality so that you can release gradually and spot the bugs - often via error monitoring and user feedback - before they affect everyone. Yes, realize it can happen but there are techniques to minimize the chance of it happening.
