FYI you can create a key binding to "<Actions>/inserted_objects/insert_code" from Preferences. I've bound Ctrl-Shift-C and it's faster than hunting for it in the menus.

The syntax selection dropdown isn't great though. I wish I could type-to-search in it.

If it's an API that you plan to force on me then you better believe you will hear from me.
janto··on Meditation and the Unconscious
If I make a mistake in my perception of reality there is a chance I might die. I have many emotional reactions that prevent and attempt to correct for this misalignment whenever it occurs (surprise, disgust, doubt, anger). Are these the magical abilities that would get me closer to perceiving reality?

Their doubts are worth entertaining because their health and freedom is directly on the line. They correctly suspect they are being fed only specific information and all counter discussion is getting labeled as "misinformation" by what is supposedly the Fourth Estate.

If I drive across a bridge I should have the right to question the competency and the trust being put in the engineers. If something looks like a crack, I would ask detailed questions and I hope my fellow citizens would do the same. Can you really not find the logic, in good faith?

If they get injected they are participants already.

If you keep the fine technical points from the general public, everyone will remain uninformed and will correctly suspect a conspiracy to suppress information. Having contempt for them (calling everyone who disagrees an "anti-vaxers") is not doing your position any good.

In a few years the other political party will be elected and make decisions on your behalf. Will you be as keen on their mission to fight misinformation from this perspective of "people are sheep"?

I'm personally delighted whenever "the general public" is interested in participating in my field of expertise. I love describing how we scientifically approach the unknown with models and attempts at falsification. And how we make engineering decisions and for what reasons. You've never talked with non-technical people about browser standards and programming language design? If you can't present good counterpoints to uninformed statements then you don't understand your own field.

janto··on Ask HN: Am I being instructed to do something illegal? (DEI hiring practices)
I think those pushing DEI in the US would take issue if you are selecting from the majority.
janto··on Ask HN: Am I being instructed to do something illegal? (DEI hiring practices)
Supply will never be fully resolved from a minority pool; there are less of them - the definition of a minority.
janto··on Ask HN: Am I being instructed to do something illegal? (DEI hiring practices)
The E in DEI is for Equity, not Equality. It is outcome focused, and not about equal opportunity. DSA would technically be insufficient if you were maximizing DEI.

janto··on Graphviz: Open-source graph visualization software
For some of its diagrams, yes. And yet PlantUML results still look better. I think the problem is that Graphviz's glyphs are somewhat crude.

janto··on Do climate models predict extreme weather?
You want to control how people act and feel above all else.
janto··on T.S. Eliot was flawed, but a new book reminds of his greatness on the page
It's possible to be nuanced when evaluating someone's deeds.

> Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains … an unuprooted small corner of evil.

How can you claim it's your thing? Customers ain't paying for that.
janto··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
Congratulations, you now have a personal experience that is required to increase your future effectiveness. It will continue to inform you on a visceral level when you are heading down a meaningless road.

It sounds like you spent your time and attention on an aspect that is not of value to the customer (user) that is paying the salaries of yourself and your managers.

There are various reasons for this, but keep in mind that you only have control over your own familiarity with the customer's needs and what you then prioritize. If you rely on the guidance and understanding of your manager and boss, you will only get resentful whenever they make a mistake and treat you unfairly.

"no need to make this a hill to die on" is what you say to someone to take away their ability to say "no". Don't make it your usual stance.

janto··on Swedes were fooled by one of the biggest scientific bluffs of our time (2020)
Only if you disregard the importance of belief, meaning, individuation, dialog and their influence on other psychologists.
janto··on Swedes were fooled by one of the biggest scientific bluffs of our time (2020)
> He started by placing Freud and Jung as the grounders of modern psychology, a distinction that even a someone who has studied a four-week course in the area will know is incorrect. The subject has developed greatly since the time of Freud, Jung and comic book author, Marston.

The author's resistance against Freud and Jung's contributions is... myopic?

janto··on Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore?
Facebook's value of storing and serving images and posts of individuals is all in the tech that it is built with. Are you saying that there is nothing in the engine, body or wheels of a race car that represents its value? If your product's value requires certain technical properties (robustness, speed, conforming protocols) and you did not develop those then you did not create all the aspects that your users value.

A picture's ability to convey the art, absolutely does owe a lot to the technology (ink, canvas, culture) that was used in its creation.

janto··on Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore?
indeed, it is easy to miss the shoulders we stand on
janto··on Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore?
Ha! Equating the relative value and effort that went into the underlying FOSS tech to "just a pencil", is a pretty accurate description of what a company does.

In reality, many a company would put a frame around the picture and market itself as an innovative artist. There's value in the frame, sure...however...

janto··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?

janto··on Opt Out of Cynicism
When you say we "understand" what it's supposed to be, what do you mean? That morality is an attempt to generalize required behaviour over different situations was the point. The utility of the morality project is that has the goal of preventing any situation from going to hell. That's what makes the game compelling to participants. From a selfish game theory perspective, the repeated interactions is the argument for it.
