janpmz··on Jazz – Apps with Distributed State
My first thoughts after visiting the webiste: People will be quick to create apps with this. But what happens if I want to implement something that is not supported by the framework yet? That is a common problem with frameworks in my experience.
janpmz··on The protein Reelin keeps popping up in brains that resist aging and Alzheimer’s
I asked ChatGPT which behaviour results in Reelin being present. It's physical exercise, cognitive activities and social interaction. Behaviours that reduce Reelin are stress, drugs and bad nutrition. Maybe it's just correlation.
janpmz··on Caffeine suppresses cerebral grey matter responses to chronic sleep restriction
Recently I've learned that half of the people are slow caffein metabolizers. The caffein stays longer in their system and it might negatively affect their sleep. Considering how many people drink coffee, I think a lot of people are affected by this.
janpmz··on SpreadsheetLLM: Encoding Spreadsheets for Large Language Models
It should become a standard for papers to publish their code. After all it's a publication.
janpmz··on Mystery as 4k-year-old axe-heads sent to museum
I wonder how they know the axe-heads are 4k years old. Carbon dating tells them how old the material is, but how do they know when the head was formed into an axe? The same goes for cave paintings. They can date how old the paint is, but how do they know when it was painted?
janpmz··on Developing Inside a Container (2022)
I like the concept. What I didn't like was:

- Re-opening the project in a dev container felt like overhead

- I sometimes stuggled with setting the work directory

- Restarting the development container for various reasons interrupts the development

janpmz··on Mitochondrial signal transduction (2022)
Mitochondria are ancient bacteria that merged into the eukaryotic cell, accordinga to a theroy. They have a distinct DNA from the rest of the human body and are inherited via the mother. The amount of mitochondria can change, if you exercise more and eat less sugar, the number of mitochondria in your body grows!
janpmz··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
The Nazca lines in Peru seem to align with the shadows of the mountain, I made two videos to demonstrate it: https://x.com/janBuild/status/1796472554905022785

In the second video, you can see that the shadow seems to align with a curved line during summer solstice: https://x.com/janBuild/status/1796473232658518133

janpmz··on Show HN: I built a keyword research tool without a monthly subscription
I like that it's without a subscription. I don't need SEO research all the time, only when I consider a new project.
janpmz··on Pdf.tocgen
You can upload a PDF and convert the chapters into MP3s (either original text or simplified text). But for PDFs without a table of contents, you can only convert single pages.
janpmz··on Pdf.tocgen
Recently I found the getToc function in PyMuPdf was too slow. I told them about it in their discord, and a day later they had fixed it. Now it only takes a couple of milliseconds. I'm using it for my project pdftomp3. Pdf.tocgen looks useful too, but I'm not sure if I can use it because of the licencse?
janpmz··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
My thoughts:

I love the idea.

For a website that produces designs, your landing page looks a bit simple.

I asked it to generate a table. Now I'm not sure if the progress bar on top shows the code generation progress or if I'm running out of demo time.

It took a while but now I have a table, thats pretty cool :)

janpmz··on Show HN: Self-Hosting Starter Package
What is your experience with serverless hosting versus self hosting?
janpmz··on When will computer hardware match the human brain? (1998)
Reading about brain waves makes me think analog computing could be the way to go.
janpmz··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
I've built a workflow recorder with a screen history (MVP).

I concluded that in case this is a viable approach, Microsoft or Apple will built that into their OS natively as part of a copilot that remembers everything and comes to assist the user with the knowlede.

My screen history was not as advanced as the app mentioned here though. And I didn't use it myself.

janpmz··on Human-level few-shot concept induction through minimax entropy learning
Sad they didn't cite you. But you never know, maybe your ideas influenced their future thinking pathways.
janpmz··on Human-level few-shot concept induction through minimax entropy learning
If I understood this correctly:

Minimizing entropy: Learn filters that can increase the likelihood of the observed data.

Maximizing entropy: Learning how to combine the filters.

janpmz··on Collection of notebooks showcasing some fun and effective ways of using Claude
This looks pretty good.
janpmz··on Collection of notebooks showcasing some fun and effective ways of using Claude
I made a website where you can save your prompts with Claude. I found myself reusing prompts a lot: templates.chat

EDIT: And you can use it from the EU

janpmz··on Transformer as a general purpose computer
I think the problem is that small errors compund, even if each step in a process has a low chance of going wrong.
janpmz··on Micro-Dollars for Financial Calculations Without Floating Point Inaccuracies
Hey, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post youtube videos, but maybe you find it useful.
janpmz··on Show HN: I built a search engine for 200k open source icons
Does it offer semantic search of fitting icons?
janpmz··on Two open source projects with great architecture documentation
This shows that the maintainers really care about the quality of their repository.
janpmz··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell: The story of E. coli chemotaxis
Thats a nice view. Packages of chemical ingredients that react. And they are in an environment together with gradients of molecules that start reactions at specific concentrations.
janpmz··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell: The story of E. coli chemotaxis
I would love to understand how individual cells come together to form functioning organs with clear boundaries.
janpmz··on Show HN: jnv: interactive JSON filter using jq
Sometimes I wish I could search within a json output in the browser or IDE. But the problem is not urgent enough to spend time on it.
janpmz··on Show HN: Ali – Create Command Aliases Instantly
What are your favorite aliases?

Mine is: history | grep

for quick search of the command history.

janpmz··on Show HN: Ali – Create Command Aliases Instantly
I just added alianalyze - Show the most frequent, non-trivial commands of the history and turn them into an alias.
janpmz··on Show HN: Ali – Create Command Aliases Instantly
My workflow:

- Use lengthy command in ubuntu console

- Press up arrow

- add ali <aliasname> infront of it

- Use it immediately

janpmz··on Show HN: Piping logs, visualizing in a web app – just suffix "| npx logscreen"
I'm a clean code guy and tailwind made my code look terrible. But I gave it a chance because I heared so many positive things about it. Now I'm happy with it. I don't have to jump around from HTML to CSS and back to HTML.
