janlin1999··on Ask HN: Did you learn any life changing lessons this year?
Thanks for your comments. It would certainly be hard for me to share as openly as you have here.

I understand from your comments that you have turned to some concept of God (cultural inheritance) in order to find meaning in your life. Different people find meaning in different ideas, people, projects, etc. I don't mean to belabor the point, but I think you have invested meaning in a set of writings that explicitly say that they are meaningless (or worse than harmless) unless certain key parts are historically true, and you explicitly deny the historicity of those parts.

As I have understood your situation, it's a little like a cancer patient being presented with several different options, all with varying probabilities of success and none with any guarantee. After much research and deliberation, the patient knowingly chooses the placebo option. There are obviously some benefits to the placebo option; it just seems that most people in that situation wouldn't choose that option. If you're interested in talking more synchronously, I can be reached via contact information in my profile.

> To be clear, I'm Christian now, as of August. I take the Bible seriously now. But to be extra clear, I believe it's all metaphor.

Isn't that an odd position to take when parts of the Bible insist that it is not metaphorical? (e.g. Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 15 about why he believes in Jesus' bodily resurrection and his conclusion that "If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.") I can understand those who believe the Bible to be true (mixed in with some metaphor) and I can understand those who do not believe it to be true. It seems odd, though, to believe that it is entirely metaphorical and decide to take it seriously, given some of what it says.

In Romans 7, Paul makes the argument that he cannot set himself free from sin and he needs God. If you believe the Bible is entirely metaphorical but take it seriously, do you believe you are setting yourself free?

janlin1999··on Back-and-forth exchanges boost children’s brain response to language
Yes, I believe Moro and Galant reflexes were two of the ones that my son worked on. I think there were two others not on that list.
janlin1999··on Back-and-forth exchanges boost children’s brain response to language
Not sure if the issues are the same as the ones that we experienced with our son, but my wife suspected that our son had ADHD and she read several books and ended up agreeing with the ideas behind brain balance. She found a chiropractic neurologist who studied with the author of the book, and he prescribed some exercises to overcome some primitive reflexes and an elimination diet. Our son became less irritable and is better able to focus (but is still working on impulse control). My wife is super happy with the results.

> A more forthcoming query from you that 1) showed that you had done your homework (you clearly haven't), 2) told me what you know and don't know, and 3) told me which precise points you don't understand or aren't yet willing to believe would -- naturally -- have produced a more useful answer from me.

Actually, this response is already sufficiently useful. This is not an area that I have researched, nor is it one that I intend to spend much time on, so I appreciate the list that you've put together. I listened to most of Stephen Hsu's talk and liked it (he sounds like he's well-versed with the research, and he used sufficiently "small words" to be understandable).

janlin1999··on The Bright Students Left Behind
> This is extremely well backed with research.

Sounds like a bold claim in an area of controversy. Do you have recommendations for publicly available online articles that substantiate your claim that are:

1) readable by non-academics

2) well-regarded / reputable and

3) control for confounding factors?

janlin1999··on The Bright Students Left Behind
Doesn't Chomsky make a pretty big assumption there? I feel that he chills intellectual inquiry in this area by calling anyone interested in these questions racists and so forth.

It seems that there are legitimate questions that could be informed by this line of inquiry. For example, research might affect one's opinion about race-based affirmative action programs mandating that the admitted student body mirror the overall population (assuming that IQ is a relevant factor in college admissions). In the scientific realm, if IQ were indeed heritable and if there were substantive differences across large groups of people, wouldn't people be curious why, and by figuring out the pathway, perhaps be able to design supplements or lifestyle changes to raise people's IQs?

I'm not saying that this area of research should be given priority, but it does seem legitimate. As Horgan concedes, this overall sentiment does seem to go against the grain of freedom of scientific inquiry.

If read in isolation, the paper seems pretty convincing that something is amiss. However, it looks like some other scientists have generally confirmed the findings from Mann et al.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockey_stick_controversy#Furth...

I haven't read those other papers.

I'm not terribly well-informed about the evidence linking vaccines to death, so I briefly looked this up: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/6mishome.htm#cause ("the risk of death from vaccines is 'extraordinarily low'" -- quoting a IOM 1994 report) Do you have links to more recent and more informative publications from widely accepted sources that I should look at?

Also, I'm learning about this and am primarily concerned about the possibility of remote exploits -- if a web server returns 404 for an invalid URL, how does the attack vector work if the exploit writer does not successfully guess a URL? Thanks.

janlin1999··on Ask HN: Dealing with a huge MySQL database - help
It sounds like your database is roughly the same size as the database that we work with, and MySQL performance has been a recurring issue for us. Assuming that you've done a reasonable job of option 2, I gravitate towards option 1 and maybe option 4 (depending on how confident you are of your team's technical capabilities and how expensive consultants are relative to additional hardware).

These are intermediate steps that have helped, giving us some time to figure we whether want to migrate to a different database:

1) We started using InnoDB a few years ago.

2) One of our common queries joined parts of multiple large tables; we essentially cached the useful parts of the join and put the results into a memory table.

3) Our non-production server is under a lot of load from our back-end processes, and we decided to move the database to a RAM disk, which greatly improved performance. It's important to note that, while inconvenient, a power outage is not catastrophic in our case (e.g. we don't deal with financial transactions); we do daily backups to non-volatile memory. For around $5,000, you can build your own server that has over 250 GB of RAM and then put it into a co-location facility.

We seriously considered migrating to Postgres, but #3 has bought us some time on that front. It might be that we eventually still migrate, but we prefer to do it after the company is on better financial footing. It might also be that while we wait, other less painful options open up over time (e.g. maybe MariaDB will suffice).

I hope the situation resolves well.
