jankotek··on The social and economic costs borne by young people without offices
Not really, many people still have to go to work, even with childcare closed. WFH is a privilige, not burden.
jankotek··on The social and economic costs borne by young people without offices
But daycare closed is a different problem. If childcare would be closed, and you still had to commute to office... WFH saved you in this case.
jankotek··on The social and economic costs borne by young people without offices
》For the working parent whose productivity has been slashed by 50% and stress has gone up by 50% due to parenting obligations, WFH might be terrible.

And working at office with 1 hour drive home, makes those parenting obligations somehow easier?

jankotek··on India authorises sale of electric vehicles without batteries
DRM stuff does not really work outside US, especially in India. Most electric vehicles here are ebikes or small three wheel lorries. Many use recycled laptop batteries or even lead car batteries.
jankotek··on Tips for stable and portable software
Hm, decades is not that much, most enterprise code fits into that. But how about 200 years?

It is about people. Documentation, paper trail why some decisions were made, archiving build tools, VMs, dependency source code..

Also C, POSIX and Motif are terrible choice for their fragmentation. Java is very booring, but compiling and debugging 20 years old code is very common.

jankotek··on Why I don't give .edu discounts
Are people actually using .edu for email? It is gone once you leave uni.
jankotek··on Technical Debt Doesn’t Exist
> To make another analogy, when you bring your car to the mechanic to replace breaks after 80 000 kilometers, he doesn't proceed to warn that the previous mechanics has left debt'ed break pads all over the place and to question the person's qualifications.

Good mechanic will refuse to touch your car. If breaks would fail after her fix, she might be liable.

Same apply to coders. If your code is bad, it will be very difficult to find good developer to fix it.

jankotek··on SATCON1 Report on Impact of Satellite Constellations on Astronomy
Major cost is reliability. Also design for deployment is complicated. Spitzer telecope was expensive for foldable mirror.

Cheap rockets with fast deployment would be game changer.

jankotek··on SATCON1 Report on Impact of Satellite Constellations on Astronomy
Cheap rockets will make space telescopes way more accessible. Ground survey telescopes have serious limitations. So for science this could be a positive thing.

I am more worried about monopolies and accessibility of this new internet. If it ruins sky for everyone, but only a few can afford it, that would be a terrible deal.

jankotek··on Tripping over the potholes in too many libraries
Could you explain a bit more? I think most pkg repos are just static directories. If you do https reencryption, and https certs do not match EVERYTHING will break.
jankotek··on Silicon MacBook could launch on 27 October and cost $800
How would make ARM chip DDR RAM cheaper? I expect Apple to finally fix cooling and power management, but that is all.
jankotek··on Launch HN: QuestDB (YC S20) – Fast open source time series database
Good luck. I work on similar OS database engine for about decade now. It is not bad, but I think consulting is better way to get funds. Also avoid "zero gc", JVM can be surprisingly good.

Will be in touch :)

jankotek··on The Galaksija computer was a craze in 1980s Yugoslavia
I started on "paper computer" [1]. Real hardware was crazy expensive, even ABC technical magazine was difficult to get.

jankotek··on How did anyone do math in Roman numerals? (2017)
Most merchants at Roman times used Greek nimeral, it has much easier algebra comparable to arabic.
jankotek··on The Many Methods of Communicating with Submarines
Neutrino detection is very slow, it is averaging signal over several hours to transfer a few bytes. Useless for HFT.
jankotek··on Krita, OpenGL and Qt
Stop using buggy proprietary system, especially if you are a developer. It is something like Internet Explorer or Windows several years ago.
jankotek··on Scientists say you can cancel the noise but keep your window open
It releases nano particles, not great for breathing.
jankotek··on A decidedly non-Linux distro walkthrough: Haiku R1/beta2
I used Beos way back in 2001 as my main OS. Compared to linux it was more stable and used less resources. Great to se it still exists.
jankotek··on HonKit: A Fork of GitBook
I had many problems with sphinx, mainly site structure, gitbook was easier. But that was 5 years ago. Now I am switching to github wiki.
jankotek··on Palm – The best small phone for minimalists, athletes, and kids
I have very good experience with Elari NanoPhone. Only 30 grams and 5 days battery life. It can serve as a standalone feature phone with mp3 player.

But it can also work as bluetooth headset and dialer for bigger phone. In this case it synchronizes contact list.

jankotek··on Working on iPad
My Toshiba laptop from 2006 has build in cellular modem. It is pretty common.
jankotek··on Working on iPad
> single purpose apps that work better than monolithic apps that do multiple functions

I would argue that iphone apps are monolithic and do multiple functions. For example Booking, Airbnb and Uber all have messenger, mapping, reservation system, calendar and scheduling function...

Why I have to use dozen different messaging system? Or several maps, each with different search and overlays. I want single experience, consistent across all apps. It should respect my usability settings, theme and other tweaks.

jankotek··on We bought Walmart’s $140 laptop so you wouldn’t have to
I had really bad luck with Thinkpad motherboards, I dont think quality matches the hype.

I would consider this machine: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0hMdQAjy43A

jankotek··on We bought Walmart’s $140 laptop so you wouldn’t have to
Old thinkpads have usually bad display and bad battery life. Maybe if you replace half components it is decent machine, but I would rather use something like this.
jankotek··on Wireless Is a Trap
I just switched from wireless mouse. With high dpi and illumination, battery lasted single day. Wired mouse is much lighter.
jankotek··on Minlzma – Minimal LZMA Project
Interesting. What sort of testing you do? How is performance compared to original version?
jankotek··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
OS with decent and predictable support are not easy to find. Windows can change overnight after a big update. Most devices you mentioned are junk, since ssd is soldered on motherboard.
jankotek··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
I would strugle the same way on macbook, never used this platform. Pi4 is fairly nice desktop. I use it as a backup workstation while traveling.
jankotek··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
you can run ethernet over usb-c, just enable tethering on ipad. pi has build in usb2 port in charging port.
jankotek··on Have you ever asked yourself “how did research get done before LateX?”
I read some advanced physics czech book from 1991, just after velvet revolution. It was written on type writer, charts and formulas hand drawn. Xeroxed to final count of 500 copies. You work with what you got.
