jandeboevrie··on Anatomy of a Mechanical Keyboard (2018)
Here's my take on five years of split keyboards:

jandeboevrie··on Amazon to Uber: From the lens of a software engineer
Why don't you make bread (lunch) in the morning and take it with you? Just like 99% of other people in the developed world.

Check out the Ergodox EZ. Split keyboard with tilt and wrist rest so you can adjust it any way you like. Including a thumb cluster so you use a powerful finger for more than just space.

jandeboevrie··on Dutch Telephone Outage Takes Out Nation's Emergency Number
Huawei runs most of KPN. Bet you we'll never know the real cause just management bllsht. The real reason probably is not spending money on the right places (aka people, redundancy, protocols, upgrades, etc) but on CEO lunches or stuff like that.
jandeboevrie··on Dutch Telephone Outage Takes Out Nation's Emergency Number
Cell broadcast is the technical term for the alert you've got
jandeboevrie··on Boeing Knew the AOA Disagree Alert on the 737 Max Didn’t Work
First line: In 2017, Boeing learned that the angle-of-attack (AOA) disagree alert — a standard feature on all 737 MAX aircraft — didn't work on the majority of the planes. The company determined that the alert was not necessary for safe operation, so it did not inform operators or the FAA.

So all those lives could have been saved and they knew it in 2017? And they let two crashes happen? Explain that to the ones who got left behind...

jandeboevrie··on Ask HN: Do you keep a personal knowledge repository?
Both public and private. Public, a static site made from markdown files : https://raymii.org. Almost 400 articles now.

private, a folder called "notes", with almost a thousand short text files. Workflow for it? Use grep to find what I want. I had a system of folders per topic but that became a mess. Grep is good enough. The notes folder is synced with synching to multiple systems and my phone. On the phone I have termux, which has grep and markor as text editor.

jandeboevrie··on Gitlab's Journey from Azure to GCP
In their other post you can read that they have just added a few gitaly worker nodes and got better disk IO by not using raid 5. I don't see why the cloud provider is relevant here, could all been done on azure.
jandeboevrie··on Show HN: Text News, Gopher only, text only, readable news
This is a good overview site: https://gopher.zone/ - but is more targeted in publishing on gopher.

Just gopher clients are listed on https://txtn.ws and there on the page are three articles linked on why gopher is relevant.

jandeboevrie··on Using a Yubikey as smartcard for SSH public key authentication
Remember to buy two devices and to swap usage every month. If one breaks you loose access since the keys shouldn't leave the device. Use two and always setup two keys .

Oh and the yubikeys nowdays are closed source. If you want actual open source hardware and software, checkout the Nitrokey Start. It's cheaper and fully open source, hard and software. Its an openpgp token: https://raymii.org/s/articles/Nitrokey_Start_Getting_started...

If you want a smartcard, Nitrokey had Both the pro and the HSM. An openpgp smartcard and and smartcard-hsm (just pkcs#11).

jandeboevrie··on Chef extends open-source licensing to all its software
Too little, too late. Surpassed by Ansible (and AWX) a long time ago. Chef was nice in 2014 to get rid of puppet...
jandeboevrie··on Nginx to Be Acquired by F5 Networks
Seems to be too early for an April fool's joke :(
jandeboevrie··on How Fair Is My D20? (2015)
It was on Lobste.rs first and I thought people here might like it as well.
jandeboevrie··on Supermicro hardware weaknesses let researchers backdoor an IBM cloud server
Cheap Chinese labor. Security costs time and time is money. So why bother if it isn't giving direct profits? Customers still buy them servers so, no problem in the revenue stream (yet)
jandeboevrie··on Split Keyboards, a 5-Year Review (ErgoDoxEZ, MatiasErgoPro,KinesisFreestyle 2)
Quite a big increase in price for the mechanical part. The kinesis is a good split starter board, or for office drones.
jandeboevrie··on Block Ads in Apps on Android
Even at night when you don't use your phone, you are tracked and served ads. I use blokada and it blocks over 5000 ads and trackers in three days, 12 hours of effective usage, meaning 400+ ads/h: https://raymii.org/s/blog/My_phone_serves_me_400_ads_per_hou...

Blokada is easier to use that dns66, just one big button and you're done. It doesn't require root, but just like this app uses a local vpn (on the device itself, no servers involved).

For me it even blocks ads inside the YouTube app, which Adguard on iOS couldn't do...
