jamessantiago··on Russian Smokejumpers
Well, not just the seatbelt example but also the feeling of freedom from limited policing and/or limited laws. In the article when Alex claims, "No seat belts in Russia!" I imagine freedom from an over-zealous law system whether from under enforcement or otherwise. Certainly, I'm looking from the outside in and my views on freedom in Russia aren't from a deep knowledge on the subject. And the word "freedom" is probably a poor choice but that's the feeling I get when I see a tank purchased with ease or a home made helicopter taking off.

I'd like to have that same feeling in the US but I'm apprehensive about the implications.

jamessantiago··on Russian Smokejumpers
I always have mixed feelings when it comes to Russian "freedom." On one hand it looks like a libertarian's dream where freedom (to not wear a seatbelt...) is plentiful. On the other hand, it also reminds me of this: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/19/anarchi...

There's a fine balance between freedom and recklessness but I'm glad Russia has smokejumpers and the like so we can see another way than that of most of the western nations.

jamessantiago··on International Talk Like a Pirate Day
Pirates often were portrayed for their love of gold. These financial interests and their colloquial tendencies lead many to believe that the favored programming language of the pirate is R. However C, the harsh mistress, was indeed their favorite.
jamessantiago··on Microsoft OCR Library for Windows Runtime
Off topic, but this made me think that it would be neat if libraries on places like github and nuget could someout include "cited by" data. Something that referenced open source (maybe closed source too) projects that had a dependency to the library similar to google scholar or CiteSeerX.
jamessantiago··on Simple and secure random password generator
The generator: https://www.randompasswordgenerator.info/js/custom.min.js

Is Math.random() a secure rng? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5651789/is-math-random-cr...

I wouldn't consider this password generator to be secure due to the use of a non-crypto grade rng, but it's certainly looks useful for quickly generating a password.

jamessantiago··on CTRL + ALT + DELETE Resetting America's Military
Reorganizations are nothing new to the military but not at the DoD level. I think we should be looking more toward what Eisenhower envisioned with a single fighting force and a healthy fear of a nation industrialized toward the military. Reorganization would likely retain the stove pipe project of record system.
jamessantiago··on Copyright Holders Want Netflix to Ban VPN Users
Here's an idea. Start a group of ISP users and give each group member a router that also acts as a vpn point. Have that router contact a command and control type service that sends traffic data and such. Have vpn subscribers connect to that command and control service that then directs users to whichever vpn point is available. Maybe use some firmware like dd-wrt or something similar.
jamessantiago··on Security for the people
I'd like Hangouts to do a lot of things. It looks like they made the right choice in moving away from XMPP compliance in favor of usability. It certainly improved the apps' popularity but took a lot of back steps on security and openness. I'd like to at least see google include hangouts as part of their upcoming [end-to-end](https://code.google.com/p/end-to-end/) extension.
