james4k··on Reducing sugar in packaged foods can prevent disease in millions
I'm not being absolutist. Eat your meat now and then. But if you're interested in longevity, cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death. So, I personally make diet decisions with that in mind.

There are a lot of bunk studies, but that doesn't mean you should ignore all scientific studies altogether. If you have multiple randomized controlled trials with good sample sizes saying certain things, and funded by public health institutions, I want to pay attention to those.

You're right about the agricultural industry and its influence. The beef, chicken, and dairy industries are chief among them.

Yeah, it is frustrating. I'm no expert, either.

Part of the problem with nutrition is it's hard to get quality data, like how do you get long-term studies where you can control every aspect of each participant's diet and lifestyle? The best data we have is all over relatively short periods.

Saturated fat is one thing there is strong consensus on.

I'll point out that regarding "healthy" fats, what you see in most recommendations is that replacing unhealthy fats with healthy fats improves heart health, not that adding healthy fats improves heart health.

Eating less meat helps, too.

(surprisingly, in this particular study, white meat was about as bad as red meat)

What do you think oil is? It's processed food. And I never said you have to get rid of it entirely. But there's no doubt we use too much of it. Why is that controversial?

And there is too much consensus around saturated fat being involved in both cardiovascular disease and diabetes for me to say animal fats are a good substitute. It's a step in the wrong direction, even. The only thing worse might be palm oil.

james4k··on Reducing sugar in packaged foods can prevent disease in millions
Olive oil is considered a better oil, but it doesn't mean you can have as much as you want.

It's surprising what you can cook and still get good results without oil. Not that I don't ever use oil, but a lot of times it doesn't actually add much to the dish.

Edit: You can for example saute veggies in water, maybe relying more on spices for flavor. And if you're really looking for some browning/charring, use dry heat from an oven or air fryer.

Should reduce sugars and oils. It seems that refined oils are just as damaging if not more than refined sugars.
james4k··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
Yeah, I wondered about the methodology there, but they provide an additional data point.
james4k··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
It is mostly PR.

Among all Amazon workers, the median pay is $28,446 a year ($13.68 an hour), a figure the company revealed this year for the first time because of a new regulatory requirement. That’s a worldwide figure that includes full and part-time workers. Glassdoor, an employment site, says average pay at U.S. fulfillment centers has been $13 an hour, according to nearly 900 people who submitted their data to the site.

Amazon’s pay is significantly above the $10.28 an hour that the typical retail worker makes, but it’s less than the $15.53 that a median warehouse employee is paid, according to Labor Department data.

Article is from 2018, but is about a wage increase to $15/hr.

"At will" is incredibly loaded. Employment is necessary for survival.

Amazon is in the spotlight right now because of their very loud anti-union efforts and being the second largest employer in the US. Excluding the Department of Defense, but that's a digression.

You're right that Walmart should be in the overall discussion, but they aren't the ones in a unionization vote happening at this very moment.

And it's weird to conveniently act like the discussion of issues that benefit low income workers haven't been core political topics, like the $15 minimum wage you keep bringing up.

james4k··on 'Fake' Amazon workers defend company on Twitter
Unionization is a correction of the market if anything, as labor has a buyer's market. Both by the immediate need of survival by the seller, and a similarly high rate of exploitation at competing jobs that limits real choices. And arguably an actual monopsony/oligopsony, but that's besides the point.

Edit: It's an interesting admission when you basically say that Amazon's worker productivity depends on coercion.

james4k··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
Natural selection gave us the social structures that allow you to buy your cold cuts and quietly hoard your wealth so that you don't have to face an ounce of real hardship in your life.
james4k··on Twitch nabs exclusive streaming deal with Blizzard for e-sports events
A little surprising given that Blizzard owns MLG.tv, but maybe there are some more interesting details.

FWIW, you can now just download a .zip of MP3s from Amazon.
james4k··on Vizio acquired by LeEco for $2B
Another acquisition to put Minecraft ($2.5B) in perspective ...wowzers.

Have to admit I am kind of bummed after just buying a Vizio TV.

james4k··on Why Windows 10 Sucks
Is this for real? Been wondering why my home network's been having intermittent issues. Damn.

Edit: Can't seem to find any confirmation after some searching. Are you sure this is what happens? Finding this hard to believe, even for Windows 10.

james4k··on Why Apple Music is So Bad When the iPhone is so Good
I moved away from Apple because of their awful software.. their Podcast app was probably the worst one. Granted, I was stuck on iOS 7 because I had an iPhone 4, so maybe they stopped supporting it, but it was basically unusable.
james4k··on Ion: Cross-platform OpenGL library from Google
The NDK for me is an island of sanity when it comes to dealing with mobile SDKs.
james4k··on SoundCloud and Universal Music Agree to Licensing Deal
Hmm, IIRC they had a surprisingly open streaming API (raw .mp3 stream). Doubt that will be staying. :(

Edit: I see that API still exists at the moment. I wonder how that works with the ads they have running on the website. Do you currently get no ads if you use a custom player which uses that API?

james4k··on Obama Encryption Policy Rejects Laws Mandating Backdoors
I am surprised the petition has yet to reach 100k signatures.

Is it optimistic to think that most of the tech community at least should recognize the significance of this? Even if you doubt its effect on real policy.

james4k··on Jet Lag ‘Cures’ Aplenty, but None That Work for All
Hmm. I used to skip breakfast years ago. I woke and went straight from my bed to my desk in order to work, and remember being quite productive. Perhaps skipping breakfast was the vital part of that routine.

That said, my sleep schedule at the time was all over the place.

james4k··on Go 1.5 max procs default
This is a common argument, but too much software is painfully slow to use. It becomes a user experience problem.
james4k··on John Carmack Q&A
In most cases the blame can probably go to the games and not the platform.
james4k··on Goop – Dependency Manager for Go
It is worth noting that godep recently added an import path rewrite option, which removes the need to manipulate your workspace's packages or even run the dependency tool in order to `go get` or build your code.

https://github.com/tools/godep/commit/983ff9241cead0f7e6ad0a...

Edit: Though, perhaps the final solution could be cleaner with a vendoring tool written from the ground up with the purpose of import path rewriting.

From what I can tell, goop has the same GOPATH issues as godep, but godep allows you to address it in different ways. save/restore is one way, and there is also the proxy to the go tool `godep go` which looks to be the goop approach.

james4k··on Things I Learned Writing a JIT in Go
As I understand it, dynamic linking is not what is coming soon. What may be coming is the building of a Go program as a shared library, with its interface to the rest of the process likely being through cgo. This was motivated by someone targeting the Android NDK.

Although, the most recent discussion I can find seems to suggest disagreement on how to approach this for a final solution, so not likely to see anything soon: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/golang-dev/Lp59oYc4Ta8/dis...

james4k··on PowerVR GR6500: Ray tracing is the future and the future is now
Physically-based rendering has little to do with global illumination, and is only really about the BRDF [1] used for computing the final pixel color based on a number of inputs for that point in space.

Yeah, take a look: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group#Subsidiaries_...

Bugatti and Lamborghini are fun to note, though probably insignificant against VW's entire R&D budget.

james4k··on What if successful startups are just lucky?
"Success in [indie] game development is lucky like poker, not lucky like the lottery."

I forget where I read this; it may have been on Twitter, but it could apply to startups and probably many other facets of life.
