jakderrida··on The 'banned' Star Trek episode that promised a united Ireland
> I hope that the Brexit disaster has shown that it is essential such decisions have a supermajority backing.

LMAO! That's a great freaking point! Obviously, simple majorities are perfect recipes for the shitshow they're currently in.

jakderrida··on The 'banned' Star Trek episode that promised a united Ireland
> The Good Friday agreement permits Northern Ireland to leave the UK and to join the ROI, there is no path to independence here.

Which, despite what most people think, isn't the utopian goal of the Catholics there, afaik. More like something they might settle for, if it's pragmatic and generally beneficial to the people. I've been told it's not exactly the golden ticket to the promised land outsiders seem to think it is.

jakderrida··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
How do you know if it's boilerplate? Can you fetch it for me?
jakderrida··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
> He got them started, but owning something isn't a contribution, frankly.

Just an aside, he didn't get Tesla started. Although, he's often cited as the founder by news organizations, there is zero case for that claim.

jakderrida··on The last two weeks at OpenAI
Yeah, it does seem like this list bends over backwards to paint everything negative. I'm not OpenAI fanboy, but the guy that wrote this makes me feel like I should become an OpenAI fanboy.
jakderrida··on Induced demand is not a useful concept
> the traffic will just continue worsening indefinitely (or at least until people give up on the area and move somewhere else that is more livable).

While it's incredibly hard to believe, it is true. If you look at population statistics for Philadelphia up to the 1980s, it fell to 4/5ths its peak in less than a couple decades.

Driving from river-to-river, or from city-to-suburbs or vice versa was a nightmare, according to everyone older than me. Driving "through" or "to" the center city's impassable traffic grid was hopeless. Then, in 1984, they took advantage of the government buying all the bankrupt railroads and used that property to create a below-ground highway Vine-Street Expressway for river-to-river traffic and connected Penn Railroads Center-city terminal with Reading's system through an underground commuter tunnel and turned Reading's terminal into the Convention Center instead of a giant mess off railroad track interlockings leading into Reading Terminal making traffic even worse. If not for that, I have no doubt it would be 3/5ths the peak population. I could write a 50-page paper on all the things it fixed and I was only 2 when it was all built.

jakderrida··on "PayPal took $80k from me and banned me"
> You have any evidence for that claim or just assuming?

To be completely honest, and while I only have a degree in Finance and don't work in the industry, it would actually be considered irresponsible of a financial services company to NOT put it into at least a Treasury bond of sorts.

In fact, the process should be almost automatic. Otherwise, I'd argue their system , and its management, as grossly mismanaged and arguably violating their fiduciary obligations to shareholders. As to whether the other party should hold claim over any interest, that's something courts would need to decide in the same way the interest from a security deposit account once went to landlords and I think all the courts changed so that it always belongs to the tenant. Bear in mind that the interest in these cases is typically just dollars and it was more a symbolic victory for tenants.

Although, I've been skeptical of Paypal practices ever since my sister asked me how to pay me using her Bitcoin through Paypal only to find out that the Bitcoin bought on Paypal can only be sold to Paypal. That one just rubbed me the wrong way.

jakderrida··on Germany: Police seize bitcoins worth €2B
> Plus, these guys were (mentally) able to keep to those bitcoin for 100x of growth.

Given the time, I'd wager growth was completely fortuitous. They held it for the same reason I hold mine. Conversion requires either a source willing to exchange large amounts of cash for crypto, which tends to be impractical. Converting to cash through conventional sources (legal exchanges), necessarily involve either large bank deposits or, in cases like Coinbase or Kraken, conversions to cash are directly reported to IRS. I only say this because I'm in the same situation, except I didn't obtain it illegally.

jakderrida··on There's So Much Data Even Spies Are Struggling to Find Secrets
I thought an NSA agent was anyone that provides the information or resources whilst the analyst (operator) was the one directly employed by the NSA. In other words, an "agent" of the NSA would imply they are not "federal agents", in the way we use that word. But, instead, are those employed like a third-party for information/resources such that all you are providing is access.
jakderrida··on Prediction markets have an elections problem
> Shares for Texas going blue were still at $0.30 on election night.

You think that's bad? Every month or so for like 6 months, there was another bet that the FBI was going to arrest Hillary by the end of the month and odds would be like between 7% and 13%. Every month, I bought more shares it wouldn't happen. The comments were all QAnon crap about the "The Kraken" coming. It was hilarious. Some of the comments were from me because I didn't want the gravy train to stop. Wasn't a full 7% return, though. Definitely lots of fees on Predictit.

jakderrida··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
> It's the same problem with requiring age verification for porn. It's not that anyone wants kids to have easy access to this stuff

I do. Anything to avoid "the talk", tbh. I grew up Catholic. I never had "the talk". I don't even know where to start. Blow jobs?

jakderrida··on ArVid: Russians squeezed 4 hard drives into one VHS tape in the 90s
Thank you so much! I was afraid to say it was the "FireWire" because it seemed anachronistic in my head.
jakderrida··on "Taylor Swift" is being banned on X/Twitter
Also, Elon's ad-hoc policy on TOS banning being, "Things I like stay. Things I don't like get banned." really does expose him as culpable for everything not banned. It was always a stupid policy. But this adds yet another element to it.
jakderrida··on ArVid: Russians squeezed 4 hard drives into one VHS tape in the 90s
On your set top box, you'll find a bunch of inactive ports on the back. One of them (I don't remember which) is there from an outdated law which was to bolster some digital VHS technology. I think it's called like VHS-D. I learned this being a FiOs technician and would look up any frequent question asked over and over again at the end of installs.
jakderrida··on Show HN: Deep search of all ML papers
Maybe the model will get smart enough to go to SciHub and Libgen? IP holders and distributors come after me with evidence, I'll just pull out my belt and tell them I gotta go teach some naughty GPUs another lesson.
jakderrida··on Remembering Bell Labs as legendary idea factory prepares to leave N.J. home
You know what? You might be right. However, Verizon seemed to pitch it as some sort of "brain" when I was there. At least, they definitely implied the transistor originated there. But thank you for clarification. Always appreciated.
jakderrida··on Remembering Bell Labs as legendary idea factory prepares to leave N.J. home
1966?? So, like, pretty much all the world-changing, paradigm-shifting revelations were in West Village?

So, while working with Verizon, they falsely claimed it to be Basking Ridge, NJ (which they bought and boasted as the Brains of Bell to invoke a symbolic victory of sorts) until I found out they were either lying or swindled and it was another place in Jersey. Yet again, I find out from you that it was just another fake "Brains of Bell".

Even though I feel used once again, I do appreciate your post.

jakderrida··on Altman seeks to raise billions for network of AI chip factories
Well wait a minute...I don't think it would be competing with them in the end and I can't see him overcharging OpenAI, of all companies, for the use of this product. I honestly feel like this appears a genuine effort to help the interests of OpenAI and can't really find any conflicts or cause for this particular endeavor to engender dishonesty from him.
jakderrida··on First SARS-CoV-2 sequence was already submitted on 2019-12-28
I felt like it couldn't be further from the flu. The dead giveaway was that it was completely bereft of stomach issues. While it absolutely awful, I could shockingly eat like 7 donuts. Hilariously, I mocked my niece that ended up giving it to me as faking it because she ate so much apple pie. Definitely learned my lesson.
jakderrida··on Research finds Covid variant with 100% mortality in ACE2-transgenic mice
Wouldn't there be a natural tradeoff between how contagious it is and how deadly it is, though??

A virus that quickly kills all the hosts would probably not spread very far.

I feel like if there could exist one in nature, no species would last very long.

jakderrida··on Ask HN: Why am I suddenly unemployable?
Firstly, I know nothing of the industry and am just speculating so don't take my question the wrong way...

Wouldn't the the sudden cascade of layoff announcements at big tech employers be interpreted as a leading indicator by employers industry-wide? Like especially considering the way the news cycle has basically amplified each successive announcement?

Again, just a question because my input is admittedly of no value.

jakderrida··on Ask HN: 40yo adult learning to drive what is different vs. learning young?
> I think best to me is to assume other drivers are not paying a lot of attention unless there are obvious hints that they are and if you don't have visibility somewhere, assume that something could be there.

Well, that's just absurd.

jakderrida··on Rare video of Cloudlfare firing an employee
> Why do they say the person is being let go for poor performance? Does that benefit the company somehow?

Yeah, seriously. Are they just being complete dicks for no reason? Only alternative is they want to deprive her of Unemployment or something, making them even worse people. I couldn't even watch the whole thing. I thought they were doing layoffs anyway. Why needlessly bully some new hire on top of that?

jakderrida··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen (2021)
It really depends on how your body and mind react to the drug. While I can consume and deal with large amounts of LSD, I can't take a single Wellbutrin without freaking out. Couple hits of weed is same way to a lesser extent. As far as Xanax, all I remember is passing out and waking up feeling like someone beat me with a hammer all night. Amphetamines, I can't get enough of. Coke, never tried it because it sounds like everything I'd love too much.

Different minds and bodies react differently.
