jah··on Show HN: HackerNewsers, com, find other hackers near you
Is there a way to add an "interests" or/and "areas of expertise" section to our profile, and have those show in the search results?

Haha, they've even included a kill screen:

jah··on The advantages of programming on a small netbook
Retort

I had horrific problems with the keyboard on my 1st gen EEE PC, so make sure you get a chance to demo the netbook of your choice before blowing $400 bucks. The right shift key is terribly placed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ASUS_Eee_PC_900_0010.JPG) - you reach for shift and you end up hitting the up arrow. Sure you can remap the keys, but this design decision is indicative of the overall quality of the keyboard. The _biggest_ problem was that various keys randomly ignored input. Hit the spacebar 10 times, you'd be lucky to get have it register 10 times. Try coding in vim with a keyboard that may or may not let you into insert mode. Maybe I just got a dud, but the EEE PC message boards suggests other users experienced similar issues.

I used that netbook exclusively for 6 months before giving up. Now it's my $400 Playstation 1 emulator :-/

jah··on Programming Puzzles, Chess Positions and Huffman Coding
Semi-related - for those who are interested in writing their own chess programs - the de facto standard method of representing positions (in a human readable form) is to use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forsyth-Edwards_Notation (FEN).

The starting board position in FEN would look something like this: rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1

jah··on AIMA 3rd edition (Russell, Norvig) available for pre-order now
Ah very nice, the chess position shown on the cover appears to be the final position from game 6 of the 1997 Kasparov vs. Deep Blue match.

jah··on Proving a Computer Program's Correctness
If the correctness of a program requires the ability to terminate, how do these proofs get around the Halting Problem?

jah··on My Obsession With Chess
In my opinion finding a (sound) tactical chess combination is comparable to solving a mathematical proof. Chess tactics are logical, artistically beautiful, and devastatingly decisive. To gain an appreciation for them, try solving the problem below (it's a classic). Every move white makes has a specific purpose - no subjective, wishy-washy strategies here - just absolute truth on the chessboard.

jah··on Engine Yard Programming Contest - Win an iPhone 3GS PLUS $2k in Cloud Credit
IMO, this seems to be more of a "lottery for nerds" than a programming contest.
jah··on Stranger than Fiction: The story of PostgreSQL and Online Poker
I've you're serious about writing a poker bot, you should check out the forums at http://pokerai.org. I recently started developing a bot and found several useful nuggets of information on the site. Be warned though, everything feels like a hack when writing a poker bot (specifically determining the state of the game from a screenshot ... kind of a pseudo-OCR).

And finally, no, I haven't made any significant income from my bot (as it current only plays preflop on 6-max tables ... I manually takeover after the flop).

jah··on Nethax: An AJAX implementation of Nethack
Check out the Nethack Guidebook for a nice introduction to the game. While the AJAX version is novel, it's probably better to run a local copy of the game if you're just learning. Be warned, nethack is brutal (e.g. there's no saving) yet tons of fun and wildly addicting.

jah··on Nethax: An AJAX implementation of Nethack
Very nice. Has anyone found a way to use the vi keys for movement?

jah··on Open Letter from Feng-hsiung Hsu, one of the main programmers of Deep Blue
Here's a link to the games from the 1997 match. The game logs (showing Deep Blue's actual output) are pretty fascinating.

jah··on How The World Almost Came To An End At 2PM On September 18
If true it certainly highlights the paranoia of the day. Keep in mind, the DOW lost approximately 800 points in the three days preceding Sept 18th. Were investors in such fear of a banking collapse that they chose to divert funds from "secure" money markets to the insanely volatile stock market?
jah··on How The World Almost Came To An End At 2PM On September 18
Can anyone explain why this activity wasn't reflected in the stock market? The DOW had a +400 point gain on Sept 18th.
jah··on Add "pwn" before youtube in the url of any youtube video to download it
For the past few years I've been using the youtube-dl Python script to download youtube videos on my 64-bit linux box (thanks for dropping the ball on a 64-bit flash player Adobe ... thankfully GNU gnash has become more stable recently).

jah··on Rackspace acquire Slicehost
Any chance you could double the storage limits for the smaller slices?
jah··on Ask HN: Who designed the graphics for your web app, and where did you find them?
Well, I can tell you where NOT to go:

When I first setup http://chesstr.com I tried one of the larger, "get a logo for only $150" firms. Needless to say, I was tremendously disappointed. First, my website name was misspelled in a few of the mockups - seriously, how do you manage to misspell 'chess'?

I also felt very pressured to select my logo from a handful of rather bland options ("make your selection so we can wrap things up"). They made some claim about 100% satisfaction, but I was so frustrated and displeased I just walked away - $150 bucks down the drain.

I ended up just doing it myself with gimp. It's certainly not very good - but it was better than the alternatives. B latent plug, anyone have any good logo ideas for a chess website? :)

jah··on Ask YC: What are you working on these days?
* Porting my chess problem website (http://chesstr.com) from Rails to Django

* Working on a new version of my chess engine. I've had various versions over the years with the strongest playing around ELO 2300 (master level)

* Working on a chess engine that uses non-traditional searching/AI techniques. I'd be absolutely thrilled to get this thing playing as well as a child.

* Teaching Intro to Computer Science at the local university - a tremendous experience.

* Learning Doc Watson's version of Deep River Blues on my guitar
