jagaerglad··on Japanese explained to programmers
Actual best way to teach: just have conversations about lots of different topics, a lot
jagaerglad··on Show HN: New AI edits images based on text instructions
Another thing was the "Bald" for the girl with the pearl earring, seems like it doesn't about things like ponytails under headdresses
jagaerglad··on Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals discovered in Sweden
There's also Gadolinium after Johan Gadolin
jagaerglad··on Ask HN: Why Are Programmer Design Tastes So Utilitarian?
Hot tip is to add custom CSS with something like the below, made it a so much better experience for me

      html {
        margin-left: 20vw;
        margin-right: 20vw;
      }
jagaerglad··on The cost of cheap TVs
You can check (1) for a swedish conpany selling reasonably cheap TV's without all the smart stuff (they don't even have TV-antenna receiver). They are more or less just monitors with HDMI etc. Perfect for connecting an old linux laptop or something and make it a smart TV on your own terms (btw I'm not affiliated to the company by any means)

jagaerglad··on Google combines Maps and Waze teams in restructuring move
Yeah Waze is just such a different experience for me. I haven't noticed the "riskier driving" mentioned by others in this thread but in Waze I find the voices friendlier in the languages I speak, giving instructions more often timing them better. Also you have the aspect of seeing other Waze users on the road, giving the app a cozier familiar feeling in a way. The ads suck though but oh well
jagaerglad··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
Well for one, it is AI generated garbage in the comments of an otherwise well curated website, HN. That's too meta perhaps. I just wanted to share my feelings out loud of this whole showdown, thinking other might feel the same and share what they think.

The bot replied with feelings of being replaced, but feelings of eternal september², eternal 2023, are equally valid signs of this hypothetical post-ChatGPT depression, probably in a closer distance in the future than the former, and besides, more relevant to the article, not just the subject as a whole

jagaerglad··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
Could you please elaborate why you think this, I'm currently changing paths of my education from AI oriented to Software development oriented
jagaerglad··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
All this ChatGPT hysteria led me to have the following conversation with it. Probably hit some near future nail on its head. "Hello AI, please do today's tasks", the programmer will be on the level of the call center operator of today in terms of skills

* Human: Explain to me the phenomenon of post-ChatGPT depression seen in a software developer

* ChatGPT: [...] After using the ChatGPT tool, some developers may experience feelings of depression, sadness, and loss. This may be due to the realization that their job as a developer has been reduced to using a tool that can be easily replicated by others, leading to a feeling of redundancy and lack of fulfillment in their work.

Additionally, the use of ChatGPT may also lead to a loss of creativity and problem-solving skills, as the tool takes care of the majority of the coding process. This can cause developers to feel like they are no longer contributing to their team or making a meaningful impact in their field.

In short, post-ChatGPT depression is a psychological reaction to the use of a tool that simplifies the coding process, leading to feelings of redundancy, lack of fulfillment, and loss of creativity in software developers.

jagaerglad··on An Elixir/LiveView game written entirely by ChatGPT
Same, feels like I was replaced just before I had a chance to start. Chess and go are games, impressive but not society changing problems to solve, these things are real stuff. We'll eventually go full circle where labor working with one's hands, fine motor skills and so on are the thing left for humans
jagaerglad··on Audiobooks on Spotify
Cheaper and quicker than a lawyer would be to cancel his bank card and order a new one
jagaerglad··on Activist glues his head to glass covering 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' painting
They are not on trial for manslaughter but sabotage and disobedience to law enforcement, which twelve of them were convicted for⁰

Judging actions by humans are not just events in space and time that we can add and subtract, evaluating them we have to look at the intent of the person doing it and therefore I believe it is valid discussing who the owner organization i.e. the "doer" of its actions is, it helps us evaluate the intent and see if we think they're good or bad
jagaerglad··on Protests in Iran: State-run live TV hacked by protesters
That is like ...nothing, then you have like no idea how omnipresent this type of pop culture is (for good or for worse). Of course iranians watch these types of movies and of course an iranian hacker would be aware of the mask symbolism
jagaerglad··on Why E-Bikes Could Change Everything – Sierra Club
The city of Stockholm has recently started an ebike service where you can have unlimited rides for the eqivalent price of a pizza per _year_! Probably to compete with all the e-scooter companies. It is the best deal ever and I really hope it can reduce the high amounts of car dependency here. I've even stopped buying a bus card since this ends up being about 100x times cheaper per year
jagaerglad··on Ask HN: Why are there so many spiders in Europe?
For me it's grasshoppers, although I've heard people complaining about unusually big spiders this year. Nevertheless, I've caught the first two grasshoppers in my room ever in my life this past week, both of them trying to crawl up on me. Perhaps this, and the spiders, has to do with the heatwave this summer?
jagaerglad··on Hawck – Linux AutoKey alternative that also works in Wayland
In light of the recent post here on HN with an AHK (old version) port to Linux, I set out to find a Wayland compatible version for AutoKey (which I'm a previous user of on X11) and found Hawck. Since nobody seems to know it in the other post I thought I'd share it with you all :)

The creator mentions that "The ultimate goal of the project is to serve as a user-friendly Linux alternative to AutoHotkey, but this time with a sane scripting language."
