jacomoRodriguez··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
so asking the big and obvious question: in what did yo invest?
jacomoRodriguez··on Gemini AI
actually, fair point. Not sure what's going wrong there, but I really hope that does not go through as proposed. But I hold on to the opinion that the EU is generally doing a lot of beneficial regulations in the tech space.
jacomoRodriguez··on Gemini AI
Yes, I'm very happy the the EU is trying to protect the privacy and data of its citisense. I prefer this much to the "friss oder stirb" mentality of other countries regulations.

And also let me mention the unified usb-c atpater regulation, the opening of messenger protocols and app shops! I honestly believe the EU is making tech better for the whole world!

jacomoRodriguez··on Roundcube open-source webmail software merges with Nextcloud
It's even easier with the all-in-one (aio) solution. Upgrades via a simple UI, automatic Borg Backups, etc. I run this on hetzner cloud with one storagebox for the files and one storagebox for the backups. Runs nicely, gets updates, and as the storageboxes do automatic snapshots, I have double backups.
jacomoRodriguez··on New models and developer products
What's definitely interesting is the speed of the new gpt-4 turbo model. It is blazing fast, I would guess something like 3x or 4x the speed of 3.5 turbo.
jacomoRodriguez··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
thus the line "Yes, we probably can do both". We can do both, but than I would like a manifest which mention boths of this topics, and maybe even put the "make life for humans better" at the pole position of the manifest.
jacomoRodriguez··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
Why are all this techno-optimisitic about exploring space... are we done with earth yet? Did we solve world hunger, poverty, equality and conservation of our biosphere already? No, we didn't. Maybe, we should solve such topics first, before we reach for the stars. Yes, we probably can do both, but all in this manifest seems to aim to only expanse the human space - not making it any better for the actual humans who live in that space (with the exception of improvements which are necessary for going to space).

jacomoRodriguez··on Bootstrapping a SaaS Business in Germany: How I did it
Question regarding the "Einzelunternehmer" vs "GmbH" topic: in terms of liability, going for the former seems a bit "optimistic" as you are personally liable, no? Depending on your business it might vary how high the dangers in this regards are, but for a SaaS business, DSGVO fines immediately come to mind.
jacomoRodriguez··on Ask HN: Best paid email provider in 2023?
For germans/europeans I can recommend mailbox.org:

  Hosted in Germany,
  Connect your own domain(s),
  fairly and flexible priced,
  One-time use addresses,
Various Security features (e.g. easy PGP integration),
Calendar, Contacts, OnlineOffice and Cloudstorage if you want it,
jacomoRodriguez··on Ask HN: Best books to understand semiconductor business?
The articles are great, but sadly the subscription model is quite expensive if one is just privately interested in the topic.
jacomoRodriguez··on How Transformers Work
thanks a lot, looking at the links right now and I think they go more in depth :)
jacomoRodriguez··on How Transformers Work
I really enjoyed the beginning of this page, where it talked about embeddings and such. But starting with the self attention, it gets a bit fussy. How, based on what does the attention mechanism work? The similarity of embeddings can't be all of it - "it", "dog" and "bone" will alwats have the same similarity, even if the surrounding sentence changes. Can someone in simple terms describe how thus works?

Extra: the embedding explanation works great with words, but with actual tokens it gets way weirder... e.g. in German tokens are often just 1-3 characters, which do not contain any meaning in the normal sense. So the fact, that this works for example with the "hu" from "Hund", "fl" from "Flasche" and "fl" from "Fleisch" is interesting, as "Fleisch" is probably more similar to "Hund" then "Flasche". (Tokens are just examples, not sure how this wird's are broken down). I guess the solution to this is related to the question above? For this kind of embedding to be useful it is important to look at more than just the two tokens, but their complete surroundings?

Is it just me or does this articles text structure and wording strongly indicate that is was written by gpt?
jacomoRodriguez··on Ask HN: Has anyone here left the big city in pursue of a simpler life?
Me and my girlfriend left Berlin, biggest city of Germany with ~3.8m inhabitants 2 years ago for a small village near the Alps with maybe 300-500 people.

Short version: now we are living in Berlin again ;)

Long version: we loved and enjoyed the proximity to nature, the mountains, the quiet and small world in a village... But in the end that was the problem as well - small villages are often conservative, so we were the ones with the funny cloth, totally different worldviews and we felt most of the time out of place. It was hard to find like minded friends there (though I know, it is very important to be in touch with all kind of views, ideas and ways of live, and I enjoy that as well, but one also needs some friends around whom surf the same wave) and there is simply a lot less to do than in s city - cultural events, night live, events, etc. pp. Is all far away. While you can do a lot of outdoor sports and nature relayed things, a lot of social interaction based events are missing. For us to much... We decided to move back to the city, with all the wonderful bussing and hustling - and got as a camper van, which we know use some month of the year, to fill up out longing for remote and quiet places in nature.

PS: maybe the 1.5 years weren't enough to get integrated into a village social group, so maybe it changes after a longer stay

jacomoRodriguez··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
OT: but personally I think we are not yet done destroying our planet and everything not human existing on it - so let's wait till we are done with this planet before we try to reach the next one to destroy
jacomoRodriguez··on NPM – "is-even", 160k weekly downloads
this may no seem like an odd comment (please at least admire the pun), but generally I can see value in this. All this stuff is-even and is-number is doing to make sure that it is actually a number, throwing errors etc. pp. sure, I could do it myself, but I would probably miss half of the cases and would spend some time finding the right solutions for the other half. Why I should reinvent the wheel if someone already has, and that in a good and thought through way? Don't get me wrong, there are tons of needless packages on npm, but in this case I can see the value (ok, maybe the is-odd is one too much and !is-even would be enough)

just to to trigger a bit more: Pretty sure a case manufacturer could develop it's own screws... but I think in most cases they just use what someone else provides...
