jacobr··on Concerns about Bitcoin's energy use are overblown
> The amount of energy used for heating and cooling is extremely huge.

With the additional benefit that it keeps people warm/cool?

Can you please tell me why you are not interested in solving this problem? My guess is that it is impossible to do with Bitcoin, and people dismissing the energy problems want to protect their investment rather than develop better technologies.

jacobr··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
> things like cargo ships without so much as a peep from anyone

Do you have any idea how much debate and research there is in the shipping industry to reduce the environmental impact? Meanwhile in the Bitcoin community, apparently no one reads anything other than crypto news and white papers.

jacobr··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
Does flying somehow reduce the energy consumption of Bitcoin, or how is that relevant?

But you are correct, we should not be flying as much, and many people advocate reduced subsidies and increased taxes on flying. Maybe a mining tax would be a good idea.

jacobr··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
Are there any reasonable alternatives to Bitcoin which are more environmentally friendly and therefore more long term viable? While still being serious contenders. I know Ethereum is working on Proof of Stake but it still sounds far off and uncertain.
jacobr··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
> They have offices (that take energy) and employees (that take energy and also have households that take energy).

This is also true for any company handling Bitcoin.

> I'm pretty sure operation of dollar costs much more than operation of Bitcoin.

And if you compare the utility of the two?

It's very worrying that few in the community seems to take this issue seriously.

jacobr··on Ask HN: What are the big differences working at a startup, bigco, old smallco?
Does this require a stay-at-home partner? I don't know how I would ever be able to handle my daily life, stuff like cooking, laundry, sleeping, errands, going to the hairdresser, working out, hanging out with my partner... and I didn't even mention the kids!
jacobr··on Maintaining an Independent Browser Is Expensive
So if they had just enough people to "make Firefox", what would they do with it?

It's quite easy to see what Firefox would be with "just the browser". Take a look at some Firefox fork which packages almost identical software but with worse distribution, marketing, etc. What is the market share?

jacobr··on Expensify sent images with personal data to Mechanical Turkers
Most Bitcoin exchanges also require id/passport, I assume these checks are also outsourced. Not exactly comfortable to share my passport with a random stranger.
jacobr··on How Stylo Brought Rust and Servo to Firefox
This is what XHTML2 attempted and failed, HTML5 is the opposite, most of the work was to specify what already existed.
jacobr··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
> So what is the non capitalist alternative? State controlled social media services?

The alternative is not state controlled media, but rather anything other than an oligopoly. For several reasons it overtook IRC, personal websites, etc, but alternatives are not unthinkable.

jacobr··on A growing number of young Americans are leaving desk jobs to farm
If you believe that consumers are rational actors in a free market you indeed need to rationalise behaviour like "not buying the cheapest/best possible thing".

If your theory cannot explain a behaviour you can add an imaginary product called "lifestyle" to the equation and stick with your flawed theory.

jacobr··on The Girl with the Brick Earring
If you manage to get a hold of old Lego bricks, there are a few more colors available. https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp
jacobr··on Bitcoin Isn’t Tulips, It’s Open Source Money
> Saying Bitcoin is centralized because large mining firms exist is equivalent to saying that Git is centralized because of GitHub, or email is centralized because of GMail.

Email is indeed controlled by a few actors which have way too much power over it.

jacobr··on Why we have banned default exports in JavaScript
I use TypeScript and VSCode and recognise the easier refactoring, but almost all external dependencies will use default exports, so you just end up with an inconsistent code base.
jacobr··on How Facebook's Instagram Acquisition Led to the Open Sourcing of React.js
This is also the case with Ember, built by contributors from corporations actually using Ember in production.

It's not just Angular, many libraries seem to be written by people without a significant investment in their own library. It might be to promote their own education material, their personal brand, or just for fun. That's fine of course, but the projects will probably not be as stable.

jacobr··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
I remember my huge number of delicious bookmarks tagged with "folksonomy" and other buzz words.
jacobr··on Visual Studio Live Share
How well do these tools generally handle poor latency?

I often work remotely over 3G/4G. Voice is fine, as is simple screen sharing of stuff like Trello boards in a meeting. I tried Slack's screen collaboration and it was hardly usable though.

jacobr··on A deal that let hundreds of IS fighters and their families escape from Raqqa
This was an agreement between local tribes and the Syrian Democratic Forces to limit the already immense destruction of Raqqa and protect civilians that were held as human shields.

If the Syrian Democratic Forces and the US to just say "No survivors!" and release the MOAB they would likely have a very hard time gaining the trust of the local tribes and communities in the future.

"This was a local solution to local issue. Coalition did not fully agree, but respected our partners decision." - https://twitter.com/OIRSpox/status/930166228727066626

jacobr··on A deal that let hundreds of IS fighters and their families escape from Raqqa
I never understood how some people consider "terror" to only be acts of terrorism in Western countries, thus reaching the conclusion that local fighters are somehow not terrorists.

If you want to use a narrow definition of terrorism, such as "participating in purposeful killing of civilians to cause terror and further your political goals", 100% of ISIS fighters are guilty. Dozens die or are hurt daily by a huge number of mines, booby traps, suicide bombs and attacks explicitly targeting civilians in Syria, Iraq, and across the world. This happens inside and outside of ISIS controlled territory.

Civilians are in no way collateral damage for ISIS, they are direct targets of genocide, sexual slavery and simply random mass murders.

jacobr··on YouTube says it will crack down on bizarre videos targeting children
> I don't believe it harmed me

That's very hard to know though. We all have unconscious stereotypes.

jacobr··on YouTube says it will crack down on bizarre videos targeting children
This. My 7 year old watches some awesome Lego building channels and some gamers that I've checked to be OK.

For at least 6 months we have forbidden our 3 year old to watch YouTube because he ended up at some (harmless, but totally braindead) Spiderman nursery rhyme video and I figured he would be caught by bad algorithms.

Sometimes the 7 year old wants to be nice to his brother and searches for spiderman. He knows they shouldn't watch violent stuff, but it feels like a drug somehow to watch autogenerated content at all.

jacobr··on YouTube says it will crack down on bizarre videos targeting children
> The company also says the reports that inappropriate videos racked up millions of views on YouTube Kids without being vetted are false, because those views came from activity on YouTube proper, which makes clear in its terms of service that it’s aimed at user 13 years and older.

They need to take responsibility for YouTube proper as well, and not hide behind a ToS. Kids is not even available on the Web as far as I can tell.

jacobr··on Bitcoin's Enormous Energy Costs May Prove to Be Its Biggest Risk
What is the most energy efficient way to get rid of Bitcoins? Does it matter if I sell them all at once or if I spread it out over more transactions?
jacobr··on Bitcoin's Enormous Energy Costs May Prove to Be Its Biggest Risk
> I don't see these people complaining how much energy Las Vegas wastes. Or Hollywood. What about professional sports? How much energy does going to war cost?

We should, though. War destroys the planet. Energy consumption needs to go down across all areas, including entertainment and other things that we consider fun or useful.

jacobr··on The GraphQL stack: How everything fits together
Not sure, I haven't seen a good story for it. We'll stick with REST.
jacobr··on The GraphQL stack: How everything fits together
Because requirements are different. Our admin GUI needs much more data and different access controls than our web and mobile apps. Third party consumers have even more different requirements.

We never need to bikeshed with developers from all other teams to make sure things are consistent or whatever.

We generate endpoints from a Swagger spec. With good abstractions it is not much work. Frontend devs do modifications to these endpoints as well since they are so trivial.

jacobr··on The GraphQL stack: How everything fits together
I would say Backend For Frontend solves the same problems for most people, and the tooling around REST is available everywhere.

http://samnewman.io/patterns/architectural/bff/

We have data repositories living behind very simple REST controllers, an endpoint probably doesn't take that much longer to write than a GraphQL query.

jacobr··on If you use Montserrat from Google Fonts your site is probably broken now
I understand that you can be frustrated in a situation like this, but do they act like this in person as well if someone makes a mistake or if they have a disagreement?

I don't even see why they bring up the poor version handling of Google Fonts in this issue. They should send the feedback to Google or stop using Google's services.

jacobr··on <input type=“country” />
I had to edit and replace them with HTML entities, at first they were just stripped.
jacobr··on Bitcoin mining uses more energy than Ecuador – but there’s a fix
We should educate everyone in reducing energy waste.

Energy efficiency is being improved in manufacturing, most appliances we use in our homes, etc. Should we not demand the same of Bitcoin just because other parts of the society uses >0 energy?
