jacobr··on The Y2K bug is back, causing headaches for developers again
Sounds like a reasonable solution for some systems in 1999. How many of the systems that were fixed properly died the following years anyway, and the millions invested were overkill and unnecessary?

In some cases “kicking the ball down the road” makes perfect sense, just fixing what is most urgent.

jacobr··on I stood up to my boss, then he got promoted
And with just a tiny bit of effort in corporate politics your technical (or whatever you aim for) impact can become so much larger.
jacobr··on Volkswagen Axes All Non-Electric Racing Programs Worldwide
Adding power outlets to public parking spaces does not require breakthroughs or innovation. 25% of all lots in the parking garage built several years ago next to my previous work were prepared for or had charging sockets.

Like with the majority of parking in Sweden you pay with an app or sms, and the hourly rate is higher if you charge.

jacobr··on Fastmail – 20 Years Old
I love Fastmail for email, but moving all my contacts there was also awesome. I can now easily sync a subset of my contacts to my work phone without having to log in to my personal Google or Apple accounts. Feels like as soon as you add a Google connection somewhere you never know what else will be synced.
jacobr··on Microsoft Japan’s 3-day weekend boosts worker productivity
Nordic countries have some of the strongest safety nets, but more innovation and tech companies than many other countries. I’m not sure there is a strong correlation at all to be honest.
jacobr··on Parenting: Who is it really for? (2017)
Agree with the conclusion of the article, but many people would have better lives if they reconsidered this “parenting” thing.

Are you sure you are cultivating his attention span, or were you both just born like that, and he is getting older and more mature?

The hours you spend with your children (5 hours a day would be really difficult with 3 kids) during a couple of years in their childhood is not that important to their adult personality. It’s a combination of traits from birth, which class mates they get, the teachers, if they get sick, infections, siblings, grand parents, media, culture...

Personally I enjoy spending time with my kids, so both me and my wife work shorter hours, but it’s to do stuff we all enjoy right now, not to cultivate this or that personality trait.

Don’t be a terrible parent, and your kids will turn out whoever they were meant to be. And do the things you and your kids enjoy.

jacobr··on React Concurrent Mode
Buttons, headings, labels... Will all be ready when your data arrives.
jacobr··on The cost of parsing JSON
There is no way of knowing someone won’t do a.foo = window.alert later though, unless it’s a frozen object
jacobr··on Ask HN: BugsEverywhere was a great idea – why didn't it catch on?
I think code review embedded in git would be more likely to work than issues for this reason.
jacobr··on Troubles with the AWS web console
If you think you are in such a strong position that you can keep customers even with the level of inconsistency of the AWS UI, siloed microfrontends might be something to consider. Otherwise it’s probably not such a good idea.
jacobr··on US Navy will replace touchscreen with mechanical controls on its destroyers
My Volvo has touch controls for AC but physical buttons for quickly toggling windshield fans/demist. Feels like a decent compromise.
jacobr··on Roblox hits 100M monthly active users, bigger than Minecraft
If safety is always the number one priority there will be no climbing trees, no swimming, no bicycling, etc.

Some dangers, like traffic, have consequences that are extreme and irreversible. Getting frauded online is not.. although grooming is a more difficult issue.

jacobr··on Living without the modern browser
There is nothing limiting a disabled person’s browser from executing JavaScript, screen readers are generally not concerned with how an HTML element was created (server side or client side), but just read what’s on the page.
jacobr··on How to parent more predictably (2018)
It’s also about showing the sibling that was hit that you as a parent consider the behavior unacceptable. They need to feel that grownups react, even if they realize the apology is fake.
jacobr··on Combining finances
We save some of our “fun money” for things like buying gadgets or that extra monitor I might not “really” need, don’t see why there would be resentment?
jacobr··on Smartphone shipments: Apple down 30%, Samsung down 8%, Huawei up 50%
I got an iPhone X from work but wanted a personal phone as well and just bought an iPhone 7 because it felt ridiculous carrying around two brand new really expensive phones. My previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy S9 but I decided to ask for an iPhone when I changed jobs, to avoid Google.

I actually prefer the iPhone 7 to the X and even S9, I see very little reason to get anything newer.

jacobr··on Base Web, Uber’s New Design System for Building Websites in React
Nice, looks very well made.

It does force everyone in your organization to not only use React, but also Styletron which might be a pretty large switch for some teams. Has this been a problem?

I think this could lead to limited adoption in some organizations because autonomies teams want to keep delivering with their current stack.

One idea I considered is to have an Atomic CSS library for theme stuff like whitespace, color and typography, and compose those into components for React or Svelte 3 or whatever is hot right now.

All other styling could be done with Styletron, styled components, or plain CSS, whichever suits your team.

jacobr··on KV Storage, the Web's First Built-In Module
built-in modules will actually make it cheaper to create a new browser because modules can be easily polyfilled.

A new browser will not have to implement kv-storage itself, either it can let the user polyfill it or quite easily copy another browsers implementation.

jacobr··on Oslo made its city center basically car-free
Most people I know here in Sweden do their grocery shopping online, that's significantly reducing the car use. I used to drive 15 min x 2 several times a week for groceries, now it's not even once a week.

I empathize with driving kids to activities though, most of my car use is probably related to that, and it's more difficult to find alternatives there.

jacobr··on Oslo made its city center basically car-free
> Let users of cars pay for the infrastructure they use

Don't forget a fee for the air and noise pollution they cause.

jacobr··on At least 14,000 unpaid IRS workers did not show up for work
It works sort of like this in Sweden (we just got a proper government after the election in September). It led to interesting things like some extra millions for celebrating Ingmar Bergman's 101 anniversary, carried over from the 100 year anniversary last year. But at least people got their salaries.
jacobr··on Every new web app at PayPal starts with TypeScript
Can confirm most of these points, but still believe TypeScript is a net positive for productivity, when you consider things like refactoring tools (VS Code). And on top of that add increased safety, less bugs and improved code quality because if you encounter something problematic you will actually dare improve it, because things are much less likely to break.
jacobr··on Norway's electric cars zip to new record: almost a third of all sales
98% or so of electricity in Norway is hydro.
jacobr··on Atom understands your code better than ever before
Drag and drop renaming works for me in recent versions of VSCode, and extracting code to another file has been there a while as well.
jacobr··on Elevating user trust in our API ecosystem
An insurance company might buy the data and deny them insurance because of something they exposed in a private email.
jacobr··on Brute Force Incognito Browsing
But in two decades, after your data has been sold and bought countless times, to who knowns which government? In 30 years, when I'm nearing retirement, I have no idea which political system I will live in, what power companies will have over my daily life, or who has bought all the data mined about me.

Best case I will not get any insurance because I googled some weird disease symptoms in 2018, for worst case scenarios just look 30 years back in Eastern Europe.

jacobr··on Bail has become a way to lock up the poor regardless of guilt or threat
Sweden actually has a similar problem even without the bail system. Most people get released awaiting trial, depending on severity of the crime, risk of influencing the case, etc. The ones who don't end up incarcerated with way worse conditions than regular prisons while waiting for the trial. You might end up with a sentence of 1 year after already spending most of it in an insitution with limited visitation rights, none of the rehabilitation, education and leisure available in regular prisons.
jacobr··on Fusion.js: A Plugin-Based Universal Web Framework
Pretty sure `import * as React from 'react';` is the correct EcmaScript syntax because React does not expose an ES module compatible `default` export. You're just used to it working anyway thanks to babel accepting CommonJS modules, but TypeScript is the one that actually follows the standard here.
jacobr··on US breaks up IRS phone scam operation
> They chose their victims through information obtained from “data brokers” or from other sources, the department said.

Would be interesting to know more about this. In the legit call center business the phone numbers of people who have previously bought something are more valuable. The ability to target specific demographics is probably a prerequisite for a scam like this, calling randomly would be really expensive.

jacobr··on Freeciv 2.6.0 released
It has it's own default rules but it's quite easy to write your own ruleset. There are rulesets for civ2, civ3 and even alpha centauri iirc.
