jacknews··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
But also, there are no ants. Everything is made of table-cloth.
jacknews··on German ruling declares Google liable for false answers in AI Overviews
We should be teaching people to be cynical of AI answers.

Even if the answers are correct, they could still be biased, incomplete, misleading, and all the other media-literacy things people should be looking out for.

This ruling seems to go the opposite direction; 'I am legally obliged to give correct answers, so I am always right, trust the AI'.

jacknews··on Job: Head of Stonehenge
It is a leadership role though.

I don't know how many staff there are, but it's surely one of EH's most important locations.

jacknews··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
I agree, the table-cloth is rubber.
jacknews··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
IMHO, as an analogy, matter is not 'a bowling-ball on a mattress', but more like a scrunched-up section of table-cloth. Tiny knots or whirlpools of space-time/quantum fields, different particles are different topologies of knot, albeit the nature of space-time is unclear and it may well be a projection.
jacknews··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
This seems like a similar argument to the Chinese Room.

There is certainly something missing from current models before we could call them conscious.

They need to operate continuously, and self-update while doing it, have 'awareness', and possibly a more realistic grounding than mere text tokens.

But that does not mean there isn't a weak version of 'consciousness', and certainly of 'thinking' going on fleetingly with each pass.

jacknews··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
There's always something with apple, from the breaking keyboards, scratched screens, antenna-gate, cracking gpu solder, ...

The comparison itself seems moot, comparing a consumer-grade consumable device built out of a phone, to a more sustainable, modular, upgrade-able device.

jacknews··on Deepfakes Tore a High School Apart
Surely this comes under defamation law or something similar, as if they photoshopped the girl's heads onto porn photos.
jacknews··on Overseas fakers using AI videos to push a narrative of UK decline, BBC finds
I think it must be some exotic foreign brand of kool-aid, it's called "Sark Asam"
jacknews··on Overseas fakers using AI videos to push a narrative of UK decline, BBC finds
Whereas the true story is that since Brexit, Britain has experienced a renaissance and a new golden age of prosperity, human flourishing, and enlightenment.

lol.

jacknews··on U.S. intelligence shows Iran retains substantial missile capabilities
Did they fire their missiles before they were surprise-attacked by Trump?

IMHO they should have nukes as a deterrent and to balance Israel.

jacknews··on U.S. intelligence shows Iran retains substantial missile capabilities
... so we need to hit them again...
jacknews··on Kickstarter is forced to ban adult content by payment processors
"Let me issue and control a nation's money and I care not who writes the laws."
jacknews··on Analysis points to a unexpected cause of reading difficulties
'an'?

Is bad grammar one of the reasons, even though the title suggests there is just one?

jacknews··on Checkmate in Iran
America does have a not-such-a-complete-disaster, and probably by now quite popular, possible way out.

Cut off Israel, and contain them with treaties, including nuclear non-proliferation and inspections.

Unite the gulf states under that understanding, and particularly Oman, to at least share control of the strait.

jacknews··on Bitter Lessons from the ISSpresso
Good read.

"Since that time, I’ve learned that small heaters (like coffee makers or kettles) can be kryptonite to an inverter, and that this is common folk knowledge among solar installers."

Is there any more on this? It can understand inductive loads maybe challenging inverters but resistive loads should be easy? Is it an issue of cheap inverter design, or something more fundamental?

jacknews··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
This whole UAP thing is just psyops against the people.
jacknews··on Brazil's Pix payment system faces pressure from Visa and Mastercard
Every country should have this.

Why would you let America take 2-3% of your transaction volumes?

It perhaps made sense when the technology was difficult, and America was trusted, but ...

jacknews··on What is Z-Angle Memory and why is Intel developing it?
Indeed, what is it? The article doesn't say, only espouses the supposed benefits.
jacknews··on Show HN: SimDrive – a browser racing game with your phone as the controller:D
I've seen several of these 'party games', either standalone or platforms, but they all seem to use phones as controllers.

Are there any that can use browsers as controllers? For schools for example? Also something like the star-trek bridge-sims.

jacknews··on UAE to leave OPEC
UAE is toast, it's glitter was just influencers and glass in the desert, resting on the flow of oil.
jacknews··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
Isn't it illegal?

I'm sure they just get away with it because of the low chance of 'getting caught', getting a ticket.

But in fact the evidence is in the GPS logs, so they should be either required to stop doing something illegal, or prosecuted using that data.

jacknews··on Iran war has drained U.S. supplies of critical, costly weapons
It's all beginning to fit together a bit too neatly.

We've had 'China invades Taiwan in 2027' on the radar for a couple of years, and now Trump is disarming the US, and demonstrating it's impotence in certain areas, just in time.

I think we need a new script-writer.

jacknews··on Ask HN: How did you land your first projects as a solo engineer/consultant?
Even if it's true that AI can replace an expert, and I really don't think it is, except in the simplest minds, the AI training companies are aggressively hiring experts...
jacknews··on New Modern Greek
IMHO lowercase phi should definitely be that symbol that sort of looks like an extravagant cursive p (), not the one that looks like an o with a slash through it.
jacknews··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
But it's still not real.
jacknews··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
That is not my argument.

It's that AI is not novel and does not present a crisis.

jacknews··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
I have exactly that demographic kids.

It is bullying.

But AI does not make it more than that, or a crisis.

edit: Oh I get it now, we have some lobby group posting here.

jacknews··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
I don't get it. Everyone knows that a nude is going to be AI. Even actual nudes can be explained away as just AI.

Sure it's distasteful, but it's no different to cutting and pasting heads onto porn stars as was done plenty before.

I'm not saying there's entirely no harm in that, it's obviously a form of bullying, but AI does not make it novel, or a crisis.

jacknews··on Tactical Success, Strategic Failure? Washington Walks the Path to Defeat in Iran
The US will either have a long and painful and ultimately unfruitful ground war, or will have to accept some of Iran's terms for a ceasefire which will leave Iran in a stronger geopolitical situation than before the war.

A third option is for the US to throw Israel under the bus and either cut military funding to them, or force them to contain themselves by treaty, join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and so on, under that threat.

Since Israel have been goading for this war, spoiling any diplomacy (by killing the Iranian diplomats), and seem to have no intention of ceasing fire until Iran is completely fractured, I think they are the ones who need to be stopped.

Iran would perhaps re-agree to the terms and inspections they were previously under if Israel were also forced to submit. America would then re-establish it's authority in the region to some extent.
