jackmott42··on Bletchley Park codebreaker Margaret Betts has died
For those who have seen the movie and her struggles with sexism to get a job there, it is important to note that in real life the way she got in at Bletchley, was they called her immediately because she was known to be one of the best.
jackmott42··on X/Twitter has updated its terms of service to let it use posts for AI training
Threads is really nice, has a web version now, and text search coming very soon. No need to help fund insurrection at twitter.
jackmott42··on Police Seized Innocent Peoples Property, Kept It for Years. What Will SCOTUS Do?
Get ready, because Scotus is writing such a defense right now.
jackmott42··on Shell abandons its plan to offset CO2 emissions
There is no regulation proposed, or method proposed, to substantively reduce how much co2 is emitted when you burn fossil fuels for power. That is why this problem is so hard. You can't put a filter in place like you can for heavy metals or particulates. There is no solution other than switching to nuclear/solar/wind/etc
jackmott42··on Weight-based motor vehicle tax
you mine for battery materials once. with an ICE engine you mine for oil over and over and over again, and you burn more fossil fuels to refine it, and burn more to transport it to you, over and over and over again.
jackmott42··on Weight-based motor vehicle tax
Can you show the total lifecycle math where you worked this all out, or are you just asserting it without evidence?

How much bigger and heavier is an electric SUV vs a regular one? How does a ModelY compare to a Mazda CX-5 for instance?

jackmott42··on Bicyclists Deserve the Right to Free Movement
Maybe since you don't understand it, you should quit asserting why they do it, maybe you should talk to them sometime. I'd be happy to talk to you about it.
jackmott42··on Show HN: Fast vector similarity using Rust and Python
Rust supports SIMD intrinsics
jackmott42··on Chandrayaan-3 Lands on the Moon
Yeah, a lot of people have this idea that you fight misinformation with calm, collected, rational argument.

Well, I guess I need to prepare a cold, calm, collected rational argument about how that isn't at all effective, heh.

jackmott42··on Tesla asked officials to redact info of driver-assistance in use during crashes
More hardware can improve reliability of a few things but doesn't address the fundamental problem, which is that Tesla FSD has no coherent way to deal with novel situations, which happen all the time when driving. IMHO we won't see "Go to sleep and drive somewhere" until there is something like a general reasoning neural net on top of the ones doing the object detection and physics and such.

"That looks like a firetruck" says the object identication net, "but after reasoning about it, it is actually just a mural on the side of a building"

And nobody knows how to build such a thing yet so it might be a long time.

jackmott42··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
We have a shortage of fulfilling jobs too, and a shortage of jobs that pay enough to ever afford a home.

Ever wonder why people are bored enough to make up Qanon conspiracies, believe them, and start an insurrection over total nonsense? Too many people with nothing to do and nothing to live for.

jackmott42··on Xbox’s new “8 strikes” mod rollout judges hate speech 3x worse than cheating
So when I started playing PlayerUnknown's battlegrounds, you started in a lobby, everyone is there and can talk. Almost every time someone would be yelling "Nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" endlessly.

It was really nice when the game developer took action to get rid of that. I'm not sure I understand your view that this is a bad thing. There are still games with player run servers that can manage things on their own, but some games, like pubg, can't function that way.

Are you just an awful person that is mad you don't get to be awful any more?

jackmott42··on Solar-Powered Electric Motors for EVs That Never Plug In
It doesn't help with being stranded on any normal car. Better off walking.
jackmott42··on Solar-Powered Electric Motors for EVs That Never Plug In
regarding #6:

The Aptera can do pretty well on just solar charging, enough that many people could commute every day and never plug it in (if they can park it in the sun every day, which you can't)

jackmott42··on Moderna CEO made $400M last year–2,435x the median salary of employees
The end game for america is either a few elites living in gated communities with the rest of us living in filth, or revolution ssss
jackmott42··on Fresh evidence of ChatGPT’s political bias: study
Being politically neutral right now when imply you are complete deranged.
jackmott42··on Fresh evidence of ChatGPT’s political bias: study
Good, we don't need the robots being ignorant, racist, insurrectionists also.
jackmott42··on Fresh evidence of ChatGPT’s political bias: study
Current conservative americans have already noted amongst themselves that their policies are problematic because reality has a liberal bias.
jackmott42··on Fusion Foolery
>It's cheaper to install and operate solar than it is just to operate a coal plant.

When you say this you need to also talk about how much it costs to build enough energy storage for solar to become some given percentage of grid power. There is probably some % where it stops being cheaper than coal

jackmott42··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
For what use case? I've never had to charge my EV anywhere other than at home unless I'm on a road trip, and I only charged it up to 50%
jackmott42··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
There is nothing special about 100% or 80%, for all current chemistries in cars, the battery ages faster the higher you charge it. There is a little bit of a step change around ~60% so keeping it below that is good for days when you can.
jackmott42··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
That is the view of a lot of 20 somethings that haven't seen how people really work yet.
jackmott42··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
The sensible thing would be for it to stop charging at actual 75% and then as the battery degrades unlock the unused range gradually so it appears like there is no degredation for a decade.

and in 5-10 years your range may match your neighbors with the expensive one.

jackmott42··on Tesla’s $10k-Cheaper Model S, X Are Software Locked for Less Range: Report
LFP batteries age faster when at 100% just like non LFP batteries, but since they degrade slower over time overall, and since you need occasional 100% charges for the battery management system to know what % of charge you are at, it is recommended to charge it to 100% regularly.

if you wanted to protect the life of your LFP battery, don't charge it to 100% every day, just every week or two so the BMS knows what is going on.

jackmott42··on Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter
At this point it has gotten bad enough that I won't even view twitter links. It is ethically corrupt to give them views/money, and dangerous. Threads is a reasonable replacement if you need the fix.
jackmott42··on How They Tried to Kill Me
It is more general than the west, it is that Good people are naive. They don't understand how many people are willing to lie and kill to get even petty gains from it. The USA is struggling with this asymmetry internally right now too. We are slowly and politely trying to prosecute people who attempted to overturn an election while they incite civil unrest and pass laws protecting themselves from prosecution
jackmott42··on JWST spots giant black holes all over the early universe
I guess we might be better off if Pol Pot had killed more smart people than he did. Maybe Trump will win and finish off the rest of us and you can be happy.

We dill die fighting though, good luck

jackmott42··on The elite's war on remote work has nothing to do with productivity
A the top end there is a lot of coordination, big money conservatives get together at CPAC and other venues to make plans, each political party is a powerful coordinated force of elites, they are all on each other's boards, etc.

However this article did not present any evidence of any given group of elites doing this, for this reason, so...

jackmott42··on We need scientific dissidents
Astrology I would mostly be sad at the money and effort wasted. Also I would expect the research would be bad and claim positive results that were wrong but popular media would spread it and the world would become a little dumber. Which does have consequences, it isn't harmless.
