jack_pp··on NanoGPT Slowrun: 10x Data Efficiency with Infinite Compute
And that same information contained in an LLM is a compression of how many terabytes of training data? Maybe in the future there will be models an order of magnitude smaller and still better performing.

What I'm saying is you can't judge the data in the genome by purely counting the bytes of data.

jack_pp··on How kernel anti-cheats work
Streaming services already have a solution for environments where they can't run DRM - crap quality stream. My solution to their solution? torrents.

People can dual boot, what's wrong with a special gaming linux distribution?

jack_pp··on How kernel anti-cheats work
again fighting against windmills, valve isn't even mentioned in the article. Valve's anti-cheat for CS2 is user-mode.

Do you have evidence valve is working to infect the linux kernel for everyone?

jack_pp··on How kernel anti-cheats work
I'm sorry but you are fighting a crusade you can not win by definition. If I am free to use my computer for anything I want then I am also free to lock it down to enjoy my favorite game. If I care about my freedom I will have a dedicated machine for this game that I accept I will not have control over.

You are hijacking this thread about VOLUNTARY ceasing of freedom as if the small community even willing to install these is a slippery slope to something worse. You have a point when it comes to banking apps on rooted phones and I'm with you on that but this is not the thread for it

jack_pp··on How kernel anti-cheats work
Or bad players might get owned by better ones, conclude the other guy was cheating and the only way to compete is for them to cheat as well.

Sort of like nuclear weapons

jack_pp··on How kernel anti-cheats work
That is not the solution if you want to play competitively of whenever you feel like it.

Kernel level AC is a compromise for sure and it's the gamers job to assess if the game is worth the privacy risk but I'd say it's much more their right to take that risk than the cheaters right to ruin 9 other people's time for their own selfish amusement

jack_pp··on Newcomb's Paradox Needs a Demon
There's rational and then there's common sense, if put in that situation who in their right mind would take even a 50% chance that the entity is wrong and greed it for 1000$. All I'd need to know is that it is far more likely I get the million if I go into the game thinking I'd only one-box
jack_pp··on Create value for others and don’t worry about the returns
No, that's exactly parent's point. The premise of the title can be read as "just create value, don't worry about monetizing, things will work out (financially)". Which is invalidated by FOSS
jack_pp··on Agents that run while I sleep
I worked at a startup, they built their API in PHP because it was easy and fast. Now they're successful, app doesn't scale, high latency etc. What does their php code do? 95% of it is calling a DB.

You're telling me today with LLM power multiplier it's THAT much faster to write in PHP compared to something that can actually have a future?

jack_pp··on Agents that run while I sleep
You trade having to compile for actually having code that can scale
jack_pp··on Agents that run while I sleep
what in God's Name could you do in PHP that you can't do in a modern framework?
jack_pp··on Setting up phones is a nightmare
I have a S21 which was released in early 2022. Bought it new in late 2023 for 430€. I don't see any reason to get a new one currently. Had to service it twice for water damage to be honest but service was free
jack_pp··on Parakeet.cpp – Parakeet ASR inference in pure C++ with Metal GPU acceleration
Handy only supports microphone input not files afaik
jack_pp··on Show HN: Tesseract – 3D architecture editor with MCP for AI-assisted design
Why did you name it tesseract when there's already a very well known library with the same name?
jack_pp··on Blue light filters don't work – controlling total luminance is a better bet
It's pretty clear, even on monitor, night and day difference at a push of a button. I'm not arguing if this helps you sleep better but it is pretty arrogant of you to tell me I can't figure out from my own experience if something is comfortable or not.
jack_pp··on Blue light filters don't work – controlling total luminance is a better bet
Is it superstition to deduce that I get gassy after eating beans? I need a scientific study to tell me this? Same for if a screen hurts my eyes (not long term, like truly my eyes hurt) when using bright white colors at night.

A gangster will give free turkeys on thanksgiving while also selling drugs to the same community, enslaving them in the process. Very good analogy you found, thank you.

My problem is you seem naive enough to believe Zuck decided to open source stuff out of the goodness of his heart and not because he did some math in his head and decided it's advantageous to him, from a game theoretic standpoint, to commoditize LLMs.

To even have the audacity to claim Meta is ETHICAL is baffling to me. Have you ever used FB / instagram? Meta is literally the gangster selling drugs and also playing the filantropist where it costs him nothing and might also just bring him more money in the long term.

You must have no notion of good and evil if you believe for a second one person can create facebook with all its dark patterns and blatant anti user tactics and also be ethical.. because he open sourced stuff he couldn't make money from.

jack_pp··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
There's a few viral shorts lately about tricking LLMs. I suspect they trick the dumbest models..

I tried one with Gemini 3 and it basically called me out in the first few sentences for trying to trick / test it but decided to humour me just in case I'm not.

jack_pp··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
A hired assassin can have an excellent reputation too. What does that have to do with ethics?

Say I'm your neighbor and I make a move on your wife, your wife tells you this. Now I'm hosting a BBQ which is free for all to come, everyone in the neighborhood cheers for me. A neighbor praises me for helping him fix his car.

Someone asks you if you're coming to the BBQ, you say to him nah.. you don't like me. They go, 'WHAT? jack_pp? He rescues dogs and helped fix my roof! How can you not like him?'

jack_pp··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
And you believe the other open source models are a signal for ethics?

Don't have a dog in this fight, haven't done enough research to proclaim any LLM provider as ethical but I pretty much know the reason Meta has an open source model isn't because they're good guys.

jack_pp··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
I suspect the OG, grass fed, organic, gluten free, no AI Show HN will be dead.

If I used LLMs to generate a few functions would I be eligible for it? What constitutes "built this with no/ minimal AI"?

Maybe we should have a separate section for 80%+ vibe coded / agent developed.

jack_pp··on The EU moves to kill infinite scrolling
Restricting freedom of bad actors means enhancing freedom of everyone else.

Say a a kid started throwing tantrums at school. By not punishing/ removing him you restrict the freedom of everyone else.

jack_pp··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
this shouldn't be illegal like cigarettes aren't illegal.

however maybe put in boring black and white on the cover - contains scenes of child abuse.

jack_pp··on Vouch
One problem with giving any feedback is that it can automatically be used by an agent to make another PR.
jack_pp··on Show HN: LocalGPT – A local-first AI assistant in Rust with persistent memory
Can you provide examples in the wild of LLMs creating bad descriptions of code? Has it ever happened to you?

Somehow I doubt at this point in time they can even fail at something so simple.

Like at some point, for some stuff we have to trust LLMs to be correct 99% of the time. I believe summaries, translate, code docs are in that category

jack_pp··on Coding agents have replaced every framework I used
That's a moral debate, not suitable for this discussion.

The discussion at hand is about purity and efficiency. Some people are process oriented, perfectionists, purists that take great pride in how they made something. Even if the thing they made isn't useful at all to anyone except to stroke their own ego.

Others are more practical and see a tool as a tool, not every hammer you make needs to be beautiful and made from the best materials money can buy.

Depending on the context either approach can be correct. For some things being a detail oriented perfectionist is good. Things like a web framework or a programming language or an OS. But for most things, just being practical and finding a cheap and clever way to get to where you want to go will outperform most over engineering.

jack_pp··on Learning from context is harder than we thought
I think VCs end up in one of four categories

1. They're too stupid to understand what they're truly funding.

2. They understand but believe they can control it for their benefit, basically want to "rule the world" like any cartoon villain.

3. They understand but are optimists and believe AGI will be a benevolent construct that will bring us to post scarcity society. There are a lot of rich / entrepreneurs that still believe they are working to make the world a better place.. (one SaaS at a time but alas, they believe it)

4. They don't believe that AGI is close or even possible

jack_pp··on Show HN: Craftplan – I built my wife a production management tool for her bakery
Can you estimate how many hours went into this? Did you use agents?
jack_pp··on I miss thinking hard
The footgun cameras had was exposure time.

1826 - The Heliograph - 8+ hours

1839 - The Daguerreotype - 15–30 Mins

1841 - The Calotype - 1–2 Mins

1851 - Wet Plate Collodion - 2–20 Secs

1871 - The Dry Plate - < 1 Second.

So it took 45 years to perfect the process so you could take an instant image. Yet we complain after 4 years of LLMs that they're not good enough.
