Mostly a pseudo-humble comment farmer (h-index:~7?).

Still looking for the Partimage loopback mount utility I remember stumbling across years ago but failed to bookmark and can not magically Google back up...

j_s··on Silicon Valley elites spending $60 for less than 3 gallons of unfiltered water
In case you missed the discussion of the source NYT article 3 days ago:

Unfiltered Fervor: The Rush to Get Off the Water Grid | https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16040540

>dankohn1: Yes, the founder of Juicero has re-emerged: After his juicing company, Juicero, collapsed in September, he went on a 10-day cleanse, drinking nothing but Live Water. “I haven’t tasted tap water in a long time,” he said.... “You have to be agile and tactile, and be available to experiment,” he said. “Literally, you have to carry bottles of water through the dark.”

j_s··on Clang runs in the browser and compiles C++ to WebAssembly
Web browsers cross the uncanny valley home to 99+% of open-source, free-as-in-beer, and even commercially supported cross-platform GUI toolkits. This is due in part to the freedom to evolve new UI/UX concepts, but primarily because incentives align for polishing rough edges.

Web browsers grew up with an always-on Internet connection -- continuously pushing updates to code and data. This has expanded to continuous updates "all the way down" (the native code browser auto-updating on top of an auto-updating OS).

Rebuilding core features such as these, even if by selecting unencumbered open-source libraries, basically means winding up in nearly the same place (since browsers are competing to optimize their implementations). Finding a way to connect to the browser foundation underneath whatever layer in the stack begins feeling bloated is worth evaluating, but there are diminishing returns.

One commercially supported Windows [browser] application virtualization (-ish, pretty much Docker-grade security for end users) option, $35 for personal use: https://www.sandboxie.com

Most similar tools are marketed as antivirus products, and are only available via enterprise licensing and/or SaaS reporting. An example of a hardware virtualization based option: https://www.bromium.com/platform/our-technology.html

I'm always disappointed when an EDM live show is a letdown after enjoying all the polish put into an album.

Being able to do both excellent live shows while releasing quality albums is not a guarantee in any genre, it makes sense that there are specialists focusing on live shows.

What is the best C# GraphQL back end?

There is probably a small market for quickly translating SQL Server DB schema into a C# GraphQL provider with easy authentication/filtering hooks. Not sure if the market would be any bigger cross-platform since the momentum follows free open source options.

Off-topic: always interesting to see how referral links fare here.

I personally am not opposed if disclosed, since AFAIK (documented as of 2012 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4156414) this gives access to other items purchased in the same time frame (whether the specific item is purchased or not) and analytics for links with no orders.

j_s··on Guys, unless you are really hot you are just wasting your time on Tinder
I appreciate the reminder! Now that you've said this I remember this being mentioned here before:

j_s··on Guys, unless you are really hot you are just wasting your time on Tinder
Thanks, I briefly considered consulting the HN hive mind for alternatives that were not "wasting [...] time" but chose to avoid going off the rails as coming anywhere near "dating tips" often has here in the past. Didn't mean to leave you hanging like that... I guess I need to spend a bit more time before clicking 'add comment' on rising stories.

My personal recommendation sounds like a specific subset of yours -- meet people by volunteering, expecting to learn from rejection as the initiator. In-person interaction can overcome the specific shortfall that is the primary topic of this discussion - getting/giving(!) a chance orthogonally to attractiveness. The volunteering bit provides a framework for shared direction and is beneficial well beyond meeting strangers (don't volunteer solely to start relationships!). This comment covered some caveats: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16041801

The methodology shows the position of power that companies collecting data inevitably leverage:

Tinder doesn't supply any statistics or analytics about member usage so I had to collect this data myself. The most important data I needed was the percent of men that these females tended to “like”. I collected this data by interviewing females who had “liked” a fake Tinder profile I set up. I asked them each several questions about their Tinder usage while they thought they were talking to an attractive male who was interested in them. Lying in this way is ethically questionable at best (and highly entertaining), but, unfortunately I had no other way to get the required data.

j_s··on Unfiltered Fervor: The Rush to Get Off the Water Grid
True! Another commenter mentioned tablets from the pediatrician.

These days progress consists of companies marketing "healthy" improvements to products that have become a convenient part of the daily routine.

j_s··on Unfiltered Fervor: The Rush to Get Off the Water Grid
Anecdata: a dentist mentioned flouridated bottled water as an option since the parents didn't realize their kids were missing out with "regular" bottled water.

To me it's interesting to consider the long-term impact of all products that are consumed/applied frequently (both manufactured and natural ones, though somehow natural usually seems less worrisome). I believe it is best to introduce fairly dramatic variety just to give the body a chance to dodge any long term accumulating effects/deficiencies... but this hasn't translated into a soap-switching schedule yet! (a very low personal priority thanks to mass-market manufacturing similarities).

Water supply selection seems to be one of the most critical choices in this department; I appreciate this chance to learn from what other HN users have researched and implemented as best.

The "obtained from cash ATM's" part of OP seemed to be specifically targeting a higher degree of anonymity to me, but it is indeed open for interpretation.

Personally Apple pay is the primary appeal of Apple's ecosystem for me. No other intermediary's incentives are aligned to prioritize the customer in the transaction ahead of data mining opportunities.
