Mostly a pseudo-humble comment farmer (h-index:~7?).

Still looking for the Partimage loopback mount utility I remember stumbling across years ago but failed to bookmark and can not magically Google back up...

Thanks much for investing the time to carefully reply!

Hey with my crap browser I can't play the video (or even really have a clue where it would be on the link you gave); if the audio were linked separately I would have downloaded it and given a listen. Keep building!

j_s··on Slack comes to Linux as a snap
eul.im is a closed-source commercial lightweight chat client launched 6 months ago; the author spent a few months advertising on related discussions until snagging a bit of critical feedback. https://hn.algolia.com/?query=eul.im&sort=byDate&type=commen... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15597468 (apparently it still downloads a 180MB embedded browser https://github.com/eul-im/eul/issues/60)

Thanks! There are a lot of resources out there, many with recommendations from key figures in the community. I would love to hear more about how HN users are progressing up the learning curve -- how effective these tools are in practice.

Anyone able to comment on how Spectre is being addressed for this processor and/or even in general by its manufacturer?

https://community.nxp.com/thread/467234 (2018-01-11) basically says NXP will work with customers privately and end users should contact their OEMs.

https://puri.sm/posts/purism-patches-meltdown-and-spectre-va... appears to only cover Intel CPUs.

>Where do you draw the line between political pressure and the management's political beliefs?

So far, Cloudflare's most notorious content on the other side of the line has been Daily Stormer back in August of 2017.

>The tipping point for us making this decision was that the team behind Daily Stormer made the claim that we were secretly supporters of their ideology

j_s··on Analysts put GM and Waymo far ahead in driverless car race

As you pointed out, this is a very fickle (price sensitive) group. Anecdata-ly, I can point to many who prioritize Lyft based entirely on personal price comparison history.

Thanks for the links! Can you share any additional feedback on your experience with either of these options?
j_s··on Designing Social Systems Without Causing Depression and War
Careful, 'downvote to disagree' may disagree with you! :)

I personally would like to see a public indication of the ratio of upvotes to downvotes, and maybe comments to flags. Without this or some other system of checks & balances (even just a total number of submissions & comments on the user account page), completely anonymous moderation by HN users passing by will continue running the site. (Users on mobile devices who choose not to comment because it's a pain to include links to sources may deserve some consideration.)

The permanence of the site adds some unique properties as well: are there any other sites that lock edits after 1 hour or prevent deletion once there is a reply (or even any that attempt to accomplish anything even close to similar, whatever the means)?

Seeing this on the front page of HN, my first impression is "wow, people are really desperate for information on this!" Can anyone with experience point to a better starting point?

j_s··on Google’s Project Fi now caps data bills at $60
I may have missed my chance to participate in this discussion, but this is the part I didn't understand.

Does this mean that when 1 phone goes past 15GB, it is necessary to opt-out of the cap to return to normal speeds?

If not (and it doesn't make sense if opting out of the cap is somehow possible), is there ever any case where someone would _not_ want to go back to the normal speed as they cross the 15GB on the way to passing the cap?

Is the intention just to throw in a minor speed bump requiring the affected 1% of users to contact support every month (leaving the few that are ignorant throttled)?

Thanks for the heads-up, it's been quite a while since I've needed it.

How has this limited your experience so far? I'm not really well-versed on even the expected impact this has on commonly used applications... is there any?

j_s··on Life in the age of noise
This topic is gaining momentum rapidly! The following discussion (of a more recent article specifically focused on how immediately available overwhelming choice has impacted music listening habits) was on the front page today:

Too Much Music: A Failed Experiment in Dedicated Listening | https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16158888

The diluvial [flood] nature of modern media leaves us little time to pause. The challenge, then, is to cultivate the patience and the discipline necessary to engage more deeply than the modern world allows. Just because we are flooded doesn't mean we have to drown.

HN user kenning summarized it this way (talking about Facebook specifically, but I believe the comment applies):

I think cigarettes are a great comparison. I heard it a few years back.

When popular, a huge amount of the population used cigarettes despite growing research showing that it had a slight but consistent harmful effect. A hooked individual is unlikely to stop using even when given this evidence, as the product is addictive and gets stronger with network effects. Younger generations understood the harm better and had to avoid regular temptation to engage.

It sounds like recycling will be going to the dump until someone is willing to process it for slightly less money.

j_s··on The Woman Behind Two Men and a Truck
Finding the right employees is the key to the continued growth of most businesses, but especially in this vertical: 99%+ of the experience of hiring a moving company is directly related to the people who show up at the house to do the hard manual labor.

PS. Set aside some extra cash to give these people directly if they exceed your expectations (at least in the US, not sure about 'tipping'/etc. elsewhere).

j_s··on So You Want to Compete with Steam
Chocolatey has some slightly-awkward-feeling freemium thing going on; there was a good discussion of Windows installer stuff recently: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15791781

https://github.com/lukesampson/scoop/wiki/Chocolatey-Compari... (scoop) is an option focused on dev tools, http://boxstarter.org for repaving dev/vm machines.

Proprietary https://ninite.com for normally-installed stuff, not sure if the free edition updates things.

j_s··on Mozilla Files Suit Against FCC to Protect Net Neutrality
There is a growing list of stumbles as Mozilla pursues additional market share, but the the company is building the browser pointed in the best direction. Hopefully there is a happy medium somewhere between "a mistake has been made" and "the end justifies the means" but it's still being sorted out. In case you missed it, the extensive discussion was here last month:

Unknown Mozilla dev addon "Looking Glass 1.0.3" on browser | https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15931730

Firefox is on a slippery slope | https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15940144

I hope that HN's 'downvote to disagree' squad doesn't reduce your collection of random internet points too severely! I personally try to upvote every comment worth replying to. I would love to see the ratio of upvotes to downvotes & number of 'flags' associated with each account as kind of a 'degree of genuine participation' indicator.

PS. It's not the mods... 'ain't nobody got time for that!'

j_s··on Mozilla Files Suit Against FCC to Protect Net Neutrality
What means did you use to share your concern? AFAIK there's a reason a phone call is recommended: letters barely matter, and emails/electronic form submissions are basically equivalent to not sent.
j_s··on Mozilla Files Suit Against FCC to Protect Net Neutrality
In case you're not aware (and for anyone curious enough to look), the extension was changed dramatically within days of when the story hit the fan. It's really hard for someone as inexperienced as me to tell what was actually run! https://github.com/mozilla/addon-wr/commit/7d4e422bf573f675b...

I believe it did technically run enough code to decide whether or not it was enabled, and I'm not sure whether or not its installation was avoidable (I believe enabling SHIELD studies is opt-in [perhaps part of opting in to analytics?]).

j_s··on Mozilla Files Suit Against FCC to Protect Net Neutrality
Are the lawyers involved salaried employees of Mozilla? [edit:no] Perhaps there is some pre-paid number of hours/month type of thing... it may even be pro bono!

If instead they are billing hourly, then the whole process gets slightly more interesting to me - these do seem like the right people for the job!

https://www.steptoe.com/professionals-Georgios_Leris.html

https://www.steptoe.com/professionals-Markham_Erickson.html

I'm honestly not genuinely interested to know how that much about the funding situation (nor do I consider it any of my business), but considering how this affecting Mozilla's bottom line helps me understand their level of commitment. Is this just a marketing stunt?

j_s··on No One Wants Used Clothes Anymore
I wasn't going to share a link to a barely related discussion from last month, but:

Recycling Chaos in U.S. As China Bans 'Foreign Waste' | https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15888827

... China doesn't want recycling anymore!

j_s··on Too Much Music: A Failed Experiment in Dedicated Listening
This is an interesting consideration when it comes to video content as well. Sometimes I wish Netflix allowed sorting by how many accounts "watched more than once".
j_s··on Datomic Cloud
> All dependencies carry risk.

Agreed, and it is often tough to evaluate to any exact degree or measurement.

However, uniquely irreplaceable closed-source dependencies seem classifiable as carrying comparatively greater risk than thriving open source projects. This specific case is compounded because there are few (if any?) production-quality alternatives that offer what Datomic does, whether closed or open.

> What do you intend to take over maintenance of your database software if it is abandoned?

I would phrase this as "Can I hire a domain expert to fix blocking bugs in my database software if it is abandoned?", but this doesn't really account for the uniqueness of Datomic (unnecessary to really consider further since any fix is impossible due to being closed source).

It boils down to "is my business even possible if this disappears" evalutation considering Datomic a novelty that enables and/or dramatically simplifies very specific use cases (profitable even in the short term) that basically wouldn't be possible without it -- and I believe Datomic does this! The best marketing for Datomic would reveal these use cases, but they are often a competive advantage.
