j_col··on Why the Google+ long game is brilliant
Despite Google's muscle, G+ is still largely irrelevant until they release a third party API (unless that is also party of the brilliant strategy and I'm just not clever enough to work it out).

If you have a laptop with Nvidia Optimus like mine (Intel and Nvidia cards), Bumblebee will help a lot with power management: http://bumblebee-project.org/

I vote for none of the above. Let's try not to be pawns in all of this (difficult to achieve I know).

Fixed it for you. Scale makes simple things difficult.

j_col··on 64-bit Firefox for Windows should be prioritized, not suspended
I could not agree with this more, Mozilla is making some strange strategic decisions these days which really make me worry about it's future, because I am a big supporter of Mozilla in general.

I just wish they would "stick to the knitting" and make the best browser they possibly can for multiple platforms.

j_col··on Stripe's 22-Year-Old Irish-Born Founder Is Just Getting Started
Ireland's cost of living has been in decline in recent years due to the recession triggered by the global credit crunch and a substantial local property market collapse. For example, this is from 2009:

"Biggest drop in cost of living since 1933" http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/biggest-drop-in-cost-of...

And between 2009 and now, our economy has been flat at best. I think it's important to look at all of these factors when examining a country's economy. The real problem Ireland has is unemployment: we went from ~4% to ~14% unemployment in just a few years. This has added to the decline in the cost of living however (less demand for goods and services).

> So, yeah. What exactly is it that's so amazing about stripe?

You have to remember, they are a Y Combinator funded start-up and this is a Y Combinator site, so there is a fair amount of hype on here about Stripe.

That said, I think they are doing something interesting and useful (in a real-world commerce sense), and wish them well with it.

> And any salary considered 'high' pays 41% in taxes (where high is > $41k per year)

That's incorrect. You don't pay the high rate of income tax on all of your income, but only on income over a certain threshold depending on your circumstances. Actually we have pretty low income tax rates when compared to other EU countries:

Right, so Google keep this a secret to protect us. How is this open again?

How about their ranking algorithm. Wouldn't that lead to a more transparent Internet?
j_col··on Autonomy misled HP about finances, Hewlett Packard says
> What other tax-payer money is used for the BBC?

License fee.

j_col··on Autonomy misled HP about finances, Hewlett Packard says
> If he was there to wield influence, he's not done very well this time - otherwise why would the BBC report on possible foul play by his former company

Well it such a big story now, they can hardly not run with it can they?

> Why would they explicitly mention his connection with the BBC?

Again, because they have to. I find it fascinating that private industry leaders would be involved, non-executive or otherwise, in the running of a state broadcasting company. The BBC is spending British taxpayer's money after all. Does not seem impartial.

j_col··on Autonomy misled HP about finances, Hewlett Packard says
> It's a non executive role, so I assume it's more for 'experience and wisdom' in their respective fields and expertise than anything else.

He's clearly there to wield influence. What other possible reason?

j_col··on Autonomy misled HP about finances, Hewlett Packard says
They only disclose it because they have to. What interests me is, what exactly is he doing with the BBC?

Way to go journalistic impartiality at the BBC.

j_col··on Elon Musk: 'Europe's rocket has no chance'
My understanding is that one of the key advantages that Ariane has over it's rivals is it's launch site near the equator (http://www.arianespace.com/spaceport-intro/overview.asp). Is this saving negated by other factors, when compared to SpaceX?

j_col··on On Hiring Developers
Re: Codility

> People who get offended too easily are probably those who you don’t want to hire (emphasis mine).

So basically it seems to be the thought process is:

1. I want you to waste your time (but not mine, because I'm more precious than you are) doing an online exam before I am willing to talk to you on the phone, or meet you face-to-face like a normal human being.

2. If you are offended by this, then you are wrong. It just proves that you are "difficult" and I was right not to hire you in the first place.

Way to go wining over developers. I wish you well.
