j79··on The Chipotle Emphasis on "Throughput" Is A Recipe for Continued Disappointment
When discussing suggestions for improvements, the author notes:

>When Subway and Quiznos work well, they work well because you, customer X, and employee A, stick with each other the whole way down the line.

To be honest, this hasn't been my case for any Subway or Quiznos I've visited. The ones I've visited has always had a manned section, with one employee responsible for that section (bread, meats, condiments, checkout, etc.)

The difference, I find, is that at Chipotles, they seem to rush you along between sections. I guess, similar to eating a restaurant where they're trying to turn tables over...if you're in that mindset (get in, get out), it works.

At Subway, things are bit slower. The employees work together, relaying the information amongst each other (if possible), or getting that information from the customer. There's more conversation, I find.

j79··on RapGenius Growth Hack Exposed
That was seriously painful to watch. From the host's hair, to the attempt at the rap genius guys trying to be "hip"... The entire thing feels like satire.
j79··on Millions of Target shoppers face new debit card limits
Not sure if it's related, but today, at 12:45PM (on a Sunday), I went to the local Chase branch (in San Jose) to withdraw some cash from the ATM. The branch was open and staffed, with tellers assisting those customers who needed to withdraw more than $100. I thought that was pretty cool.
j79··on CSS animated loading indicators
As can CSS animations.

On a project that targeted tablets (iPads and Androids), we eventually went back to good ol' gifs because of how bad SVG and CSS animations rendered and performed.

j79··on AutoJS – JS library for textarea lookahead
I'm having issues with selecting all in the middle of a sentence. Until I add a punctuation mark, it won't allow me to select all (just moves cursor to end...)

Google Chrome Version 31.0.1650.57 on OS X 10.8.5

j79··on Skip the Post Office, Use Shyp
Agreed. Not only is USPS pickup free (as well as others), but depending on the method of shipping (USPS Priority, UPS, FedEx), the packing material could also be free.

The question now begs whether the benefits of their service warrants the extra cost?

j79··on Why flat interfaces matter
I voted you up because I agree overall, but I disagree that it's a fad. I've been creating "flat" interfaces for years.

When the whole "Web 2.0" hit with the shiny buttons and gradients, I briefly played with those design trends. But, as a fan of minimalist design, I always revert back to a simpler, cleaner, and flat design.

j79··on Square Cash - Email money to anyone’s debit card
I opened my PayPal account in April of 2002 and have made hundreds of payments with no major issues. I rarely comment regarding PayPal (and occasionally join in on the PayPal hate -- it's too easy!), but count me in as someone who is doing fine with PayPal.
j79··on Label.css – an easy way to label DOM elements
Same here; Mac OS 10.8 running Chrome (Version 24.0.1312.57)
j79··on Comcast injecting JS
Oh man, I thought you were being sarcastic earlier!?

...unless you're still being sarcastic?

j79··on Sophie In North Korea
To be honest, it doesn't appear to be Photoshopped - at least to my eye. Snow is tough to photograph in general (all that bright, reflecting light!) - this just looks like a camera exposing for the foreground and blowing out the rest.
j79··on A new UI annoyance
I joined a team working on a single page app that disabled text selection (via CSS user-select:none) to give it more of an "app" feel. While I understood disabling text selection on certain things, the "disable everything" approach drove me nuts.

When we had a redesign of our app, I decided that was one rule that could be left out (and only applied where needed).

j79··on Facebook ruins Zuckerberg Xmas
Wait, isn't this the same Zuckerberg who said something along the lines of internet anonymity needing to go away??

Oh, the irony indeed!

j79··on iPhone 5
Final Cut Pro X was panned by many professional users as being a downgrade.
j79··on PayPal CEO writes personal response
Five months may seem like a long time, but trying to fix something that's pretty broken probably requires a bit of time to understand just what the hell you're trying to fix.
j79··on Dear Facebook: Please Stop Trying to Steal My Co-Founder
Absolutely agree. The constant "Get Started" fade in/out box was way too distracting. I haven't seen FlagTap on other sites, but hopefully the behavior isn't the norm!
j79··on Why Your McD's Burger Doesn't Look Like the One in the Ad
In the US as well. Typically shirts and suits to give a "slimmed" appearance.
j79··on Announcing Hipmunk's $15M Series B Funding
When I search for flights home (Boston) from Santa Clara, I usually do a search for "SFO,SJC" to "BOS". This shows me all flights from SFO and SJC to BOS allowing me to pick and choose which flights work for me (time wise) as well as what makes the most sense price wise.

http://www.hipmunk.com/#!SFO,SJC.BOS,Jul13.Jul22&1,First

As for the multi-dates, when you select a date, you can click the "+/-" buttons to add time to your query. You can also manually add "+-n" to your date to give a range.

So, say I was open to flying out July 12, 13 (original), or 14 - I could update my date to look like: "Jul 13 -+1"

j79··on The new way to land a job at Facebook
Unless you anticipate working for only the hottest start ups utilizing the latest buzzwords, dismissing PHP entirely might be a bit premature. It's still hugely popular with plenty of employers looking for developers with PHP experience.
j79··on Facebook Outage: Wake Up Call For Websites
I was lucky enough to listen to Souders talk at Fluent this past week. He talked about Front-end SPOFs and specifically an experience in Beijing where Business Insider didn't load because of a third party widget (Twitter, in his case) being blocked.

One site he mentioned (and great for testing) was webpagetest.org.

Here are the slides from the talk: http://stevesouders.com/talks.php

He blogged about the issue here: http://www.stevesouders.com/blog/2012/03/28/frontend-spof-in...

j79··on Douglas Crockford now at PayPal
Funny enough, I had a similar thought when I applied to eBay. The idea of working for the parent company of PayPal turned me off (I hadn't used my PayPal account in years after getting burned!)

However, since joining, I've met some amazing people (including Bill - He's a wicked smart, cool guy!) and seen some of the projects in the pipeline. The stuff they're working on is top-notch!

It may not be a "sexy" start up and PayPal's business practices may turn people off (I know first hand!) but at the end of the day, you'll be doing some cool stuff working with some amazing people (who know other amazing people and so on and so on...)

Personally, I'm ecstatic Crockford has joined the company!

j79··on "If you want to order it, use 'view source' to find the commented-out link."
They also provide the option in the select list when you checkout. Of course, asking a user to "View Source" seems more geeky!
j79··on A Step By Step Guide to Transfer Domains Out Of GoDaddy
This is a great step by step guide for transferring domains. Exactly what I needed (I tried earlier and quickly got lost!)

I do have a question for anyone who could help: Can I transfer a domain which is set to expire in 2019? And, are there typically fees for transferring a domain?

j79··on Microsoft may halt development work on Silverlight plugin after next release
HTML5 support doesn't suck. Check out http://caniuse.com, and you'll notice that non-IE browsers are doing a rockin' job supporting HTML5. If you develop for iOS or Android, HTML5/CSS3 has been a joy. Sure, there are hiccups, but support is far from "sucking".

It sounds like your companies upgrade policies suck! OR, their decision to support/build around proprietary web technologies, hindering their ability TO upgrade. That sucks.

j79··on Scrollbars: Why is Apple eradicating a linchpin of user interface design?
While it's not a touch screen, the track pads on MacBook Pros and the Magic TrackPad for desktops provide many of the touch gestures found on touch devices. So, touch screens? Maybe zero. Touch enabled? Plenty!

And, to be honest, touch gestures in general are a very welcomed change to the OS. I find the use of a mouse only needed for precision control (say, graphical work or gaming!)

j79··on Winamp for Mac
I remember using Winamp even before Napster! 1997, I think? The first version with the basic look. I remember my machine was so old that the mp3 I downloaded wouldn't play at the full bitrate. Instead, it played at 64kbps. I remembered thinking how "crappy" mp3s sounded and was lost why everyone thought they were so great. When I finally upgraded (shortly after), my music world completely changed. Ended up buying a Rio PMP300. Amazing how far we've come.
j79··on Ring Counter Clock: still running after 40 years
Hacking is such a broad term. Is 14 hours of pounding on a keyboard writing algorithms hacking? Is circuit bending hacking? "Hack the Planet" hacking?

Personally, I visit Y Combinator for a wide range of topics - from entrepreneurship and start ups to "hacking" and technology. This seems to fall in the second half? Or, am I wrong?

j79··on Woz's personal website
This is a random story, but I'm curious if anyone else remembers: A few years ago, I landed on Woz's personal website, and noticed a small blurb about a public AFP connection for his personal machine (I think, afp://steve.woz.org) I connected and was greeted by a bunch of software (a lot of commercial) that he made available for download. Even more amazing was just how fast downloading the files were.

A quick google brings up this thread (from 2001!!! which sounds about right, actually, for when I first connected...I'm fairly certain I was still on OS9 -- my my, how time flies!)

j79··on A resume template in TeX
Actually, it's a clean HTML template (xhtml doctype!)

For HTML5, you could include HTML5 features like microdata or use some of the HTML5 tags. The design though is great - very clean!

j79··on Placebos Are Getting More Effective. Drugmakers Are Desperate to Know Why (2009)
I agree. WebMD has probably been a boom for drug companies as hypochondriacs (and wannabe hypochondriacs) research new ways for drug companies to take their money. I've met sane people who are positive they've got the latest bug or some rare disease.

The commercials you see on TV probably doesn't help too much either.
