j3s··on Why our waistlines expand in middle age: aging stem cells shift into overdrive
i have always maintained a slightly underweight body, well into my 30s, despite limited exercise and unrestricted eating.

i personally know many people who struggle immensely, despite eating far less than me.

for me, it takes exactly 0 effort to remain thin. zero. i literally don't even think about it. other people count every single calorie they eat, exercise religiously, take weight loss medication, and still have trouble managing their weight.

but hunger is a primal thing - some people are far hungrier far more often than other people, for many reasons - and yes, it takes energy to resist hunger.

money and free time aren't required, no, but it definitely helps your odds.

j3s··on Why our waistlines expand in middle age: aging stem cells shift into overdrive
> Gaining weight and keeping it is a choice

for many people, it is not. you have enough free time, energy, and money to fix your weight issue - many people are missing at least one of these factors, oftentimes more.

there are more complicating factors here too - try telling someone taking lithium that gaining weight is a choice. or birth control, or SSRIs... the list goes on.

yeah, it's pretty easy for you - a middle aged wealthy guy - with enough free time to go to the gym 5-6 days a week - to maintain your weight. most people aren't in that situation.

j3s··on Show HN: A motherfucking app (does one thing, under 300 LOC)
honestly this joke is pretty played out at this point - you need to put more distance between your app & the initial idea, otherwise it feels a little too much like a soulless rehash / pale clone of the original.
j3s··on Sycophancy in GPT-4o
you had me in the first half, lol
j3s··on O3 beats a master-level GeoGuessr player, even with fake EXIF data
because women are commonly stalked by men, if it must be said. if any idiot can plug any picture into chatgpt and ask "where was this picture taken?" while being able to successively narrow the scope, the potential for stalking - especially of the parasocial kind - goes up.
j3s··on O3 beats a master-level GeoGuessr player, even with fake EXIF data
isn't anyone else horrified by this? the implication is that given an arbitrary picture, chatgpt can give you a very likely approximate location - expert level doxxing is in the hands of anyone with access to a chatgpt subscription.

feels terrifying, especially for women.

j3s··on Reintroducing Capsul
thx :')
j3s··on Reintroducing Capsul
yep! and we don't care if you clone capsul - that's why we open sourced it!

j3s··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
"we are being boiled like frogs" is a great analogy, definitely going to use that one.
j3s··on Blender-made movie Flow takes Oscar
there are parts of Flow that definitely look incredible imo
j3s··on The year I didn't survive
we are millions of streams that never stop flowing -- but we love to pretend that there's consistency to it. we like to imagine ourselves as a continuous person.

but we're not. we change, moment to moment, forever, endlessly -- it doesn't stop, ever. not when we go to sleep. not when we go through a traumatic event. not when we die.

a stark reminder of our fragility. i hope the author can find peace.

j3s··on WikiTok
it looks and feels completely different, for one thing
j3s··on Show HN: I made an open-source laptop from scratch
VERY impressive. the laptop looks great. wish you could manufacture and sell the thing, i'd consider one :)
j3s··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
remember - the light phone is a product. they’re selling you the idea of simplicity, not the reality. if you don’t fundamentally change your life or behavior, i guarantee it’ll be sitting in a box collecting dust within 6 months.

as soon as you’re out & about and need an uber, or maps-based navigation to another location, or to transfer money from one bank, or even to look up an important tidbit of information - the phone number of a local business, for example - you’ll yearn for the power of a normal phone.

the answer is not buying things - it’s changing your behavior. put your phone in another room. stop using it at night. purge harmful apps one by one. focus on changing your _behavior_ instead.

the lightphone is a heavy , worse supported, worse integrated, less featureful wrapper around android - do you really want to pay hundreds of dollars for that?

i have firsthand experience - i fell for the lightphone, and it’s sitting in a box next to me.

what actually worked for me was:

- setting my phone to greyscale

- disabling ALL notifications except phone calls

- charging my phone in a different room at night

j3s··on 0-click deanonymization attack targeting Signal, Discord, other platforms
people learn when they’re given kind, direct, actionable feedback from people they trust - not when they’re called sensationalists by random critics on the internet.

what have you made lately?

j3s··on I've Acquired a New Superpower
all i managed to do was make myself very dizzy
j3s··on Digital gardens people maintain outside the "Big Tech" walled gardens
cool, a garden index! love that they included an RSS feed too (https://blogscroll.com/index.xml) - i'm sticking that in my feed reader immediately. it sounds nice to have a few random new digital garden sites to peruse once in awhile.
j3s··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
not by definition, just by traditional usage

https://xxiivv.com is a wiki. it’s also very personal.

j3s··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
besides, wikis have RSS feeds too. gotta follow em from somewhere :)
j3s··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
vore isn’t going anywhere <3 any features you’ve been itching for btw? thinking about spending a weekend on it soon.
j3s··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
ironically i posted this on my blog 3:
j3s··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
yep! i recommend indie wiki buddy for discovering these sorts of community-led wikis.

the extension recognizes when you’re on fandom and recommends equivalent community wikis instead

fandom will not take down old wikis (that’d be bad for SEO), so the fandom content persists even after a full community migration.

just one of the many shitty things that company does.

j3s··on The guy who gave a negative review to Battlezone 98 Redux after playing 8k hours
this story touched me, honestly. humans are so funny. sometimes we just get used to the way things are, and we carry it forward, and that’s that. no reasoning. it’s bad, i know. but that’s life

something poetic and true abt it all

j3s··on Helping wikis move away from Fandom
oop, my bad. it got oomkilled somehow - should be back up now :3

j3s··on Matrix-Libera IRC Bridge Temporary Shutdown, a Retrospective (2023)
great post from the libera staff, respecting the matrix folks while dealing with all of that must have felt disheartening.

matrix has other driving forces and incentives. there’s only so much time they can spend on things like individual bridges.

meanwhile, they devote developers to writing two different homeserver implementations in parallel. or writing an experimental p2p homeserver - or the three guys working on thirdroom. ugh

i just hope they realize what’s important. people just want to chat on a distributed platform that isn’t irc - make it as simple and fun as possible. that is your entire mission.

no metaverse, no experimental backend shit, no securitygasm cryptography - nobody is buying drugs on matrix. this isn’t signal or whatsapp, this is discord for tech dorks.

just focus on making GROUP chatting good, simple, and fun. the ux just utterly sucks right now.

it’s the difference between scrolling through a menu on an ipod versus a self checkout kiosk - the kiosk just FEELS bad, simple human revulsion. the element interface offers the same experience.

and we _still_ don’t have custom emojis or selfserve moderation, even though matth himself promised them to us 2 YEARS ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33014245

element is _the product_, and it hasn’t moved a single inch in years from my point of view.

j3s··on Ask HN: Is Nextcloud a Great Alternative to Dropbox/Google Drive for Startups?
do not spend “innovation points” on anything that isn’t your core competency, period.

that doesn’t only apply to google workspace, it also applies to things like payment processing, auth, etc.

j3s··on GitHub was down
for everyone complaining about the status page - status pages are normally operated by hand by design, and will rarely reflect things in real-time.

give the poor github ops folks a second to get things moving.
