izzydata··on Photos taken inside musical instruments
Why do these photos feel like they are so large? Is it just the lack of anything to reference size? I feel like if I stuck my phone inside of something small and took a picture it wouldn't look like this.
izzydata··on Why console makers can legally brick your game console
You don't own the software's intellectual property, but you own the hardware and it is expected to work under normal operating conditions. If you bought a camera and the manufacturer arbitrarily decided to make the software stop functioning soon after purchase the product would be considered malfunctioning.

Nintendo turning off your software should fall under some kind of consumer protection law.

izzydata··on [dead]
This feels intentional as Garmin is allowing users to do whatever they want with their own data in a non-proprietary format. This seems like a good thing to me.
izzydata··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
This happened to be on a highway when driving my friends car with all these assisted driving "features" while in cruise control. I was going up a small hill and for whatever reason there was a car stopped right at the top that I couldn't see. So the car slammed the breaks while I was in the middle of swerving out of the way. Which caused me to swerve more than I had intended. After I regained control it removed the breaks and attempted to return to the 80mph I was at previously which caused more problems because I wasn't ready for that.

I am now of the opinion that a car should never under any circumstance drive for you. If a car has cruise control it should cruise control you into a wall. That I can at least anticipate.

izzydata··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
It would probably also cost more to produce gold than you get out of it so it is effectively infinite time.
izzydata··on Zuckerberg's Grand Vision: Most of Your Friends Will Be AI
Do you know him personally? How could anyone know that. The times he is on camera is a tiny fraction of his life in which he is most likely to not be his true self.
izzydata··on The Mira Pro Color is Boox's first color E Ink monitor
I recently acquired a Kobo Clara Color and love the way it looks. It would be neat to have a monitor with the same look, but I would want the refresh rate to be at least a bit faster before I would find it acceptable in a monitor.

Also the price tag is a non-starter. Maybe it will be cheaper and faster some day.

izzydata··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
This will never happen willingly. Whenever it does happen it won't be by choice and will be because civilization has run out of material to produce stuff or too much of the Earth has become inhospitable. At least in the extreme long term it is a self correcting problem.
izzydata··on The True Size Of
It's interesting how Russia appears to only be about twice as large as the United States or China, but on a typical map it looks at least 3-4 times larger.
izzydata··on Statewide fluoride ban for tap water passes in Florida
Everything is chemicals.
izzydata··on Firefox tab groups are here
For some reason I had thought this was already implemented and I just wasn't using it because I don't have a lot of tabs open. It appears I was mistaken. Nice to see this implemented in Firefox.
izzydata··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
This is probably difficult, but if everyone collectively didn't use services that had such egregious requirements it would likely die quickly. The companies being requires to do such things would have to start pushing back against government policies that are killing their business.

Considering everyone currently and without a second thought lets Apple scan their face just for the convenience of unlocking their phone I think this is a lost cause.

izzydata··on It's Unreal Just How Awful 'Real ID' Is (2020)
I went back to check because I was second guessing myself now and it turns out it fits just fine. I think I was being silly because it comes in this little piece of paper that says it is a "protective sleeve" so I was trying to keep it inside the paper.
izzydata··on AI cheats: Why you didn't notice your teammate was cheating
I'm pretty sure the person you are replying to is talking about single player games.
izzydata··on AI cheats: Why you didn't notice your teammate was cheating
I have an even more foolproof system. Never play online competitive games.
izzydata··on It's Unreal Just How Awful 'Real ID' Is (2020)
The passport card is slightly larger than a credit card and thus doesn't fit properly in most wallets. Otherwise I wouldn't mind having it on my all the time.
izzydata··on People say they prefer stories written by humans over AI, study says otherwise
It reminds me of a genre of videos that would have you believe something is completely spontaneous and natural, but is actually entirely staged. The thing is only interesting under the assumption that it wasn't staged so they trick you into thinking it isn't.

Then someone in the comments inevitably says it is fake and everyone says of course it is. It's a skit, but it is still funny.

Knowing it is written by a computer and not by a human lowers the value of it regardless of how difficult it is to distinguish in my opinion. Thoughts and expressions by fellow humans gives something value and being written by a computer takes away a lot if not all of the purpose behind art.

izzydata··on The Ethics of Spreading Life in the Cosmos
I'm not actually advocating for or against anything. I'm mostly suggesting there are some assumptions being made and that some concepts need to be better defined so it can be better understood what kind of framework we are thinking in. I think it matters when talking about things at the scale of the universe.
izzydata··on The Ethics of Spreading Life in the Cosmos
Assuming suffering is bad suggests there is some cosmic morality that the universe is judging us by. Perhaps spreading suffering across the universe actually doesn't matter at all.
izzydata··on Tiny changes in gene expression make big difference in eye size of fruit flies
That actually makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
izzydata··on Tiny changes in gene expression make big difference in eye size of fruit flies
I'm surprised a tiny change in genes doesn't completely destroy the viability of the organism. You can change one character in code and it no longer compiles or the entire thing crashes.
izzydata··on 'Destiny 2' Reveals Its 'Content Shredder' as a Result of Recent Lawsuit
I'd actually consider playing again if all of the content existed in the game in a way that could be easily accessed. For a long time I was waiting for more expansions to come out so that I could buy the latest and play all of the old content only to discover that they have been slowly removing old things from the game.

I assume the point being that they want the fear of missing out to be the motivating factor to keep people actively hooked on current content.

izzydata··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
I'm not making any suggestions I was wondering what people would agree is a good solution. If DRM free is good enough then it is good enough for me.
izzydata··on Material Theme has been pulled from VS Code's marketplace
I fundamentally disagree with making money from ads. I have no problem giving money to people who make things.
izzydata··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
What would a true purchase of digital content look like? Just the lack of DRM? You could still lose your copy and the company you purchased it from could no longer exist.
izzydata··on How people get rich now (2021)
I'd wager it is more decided by people that own a lot of real-estate or at least by people that already own homes. How often is there a democratic vote to zone populated areas that would allow building more homes? Rather than lobbying of local governments by real-estate owners to prevent it from going to a vote.
izzydata··on Are noise-cancelling headphones to blame for young people's hearing problems?
This would be my guess as it sounds similar to what I experience and have been experiencing for decades long before any king of noise cancelling headphones. I find it very difficult to process noises when there are too many occurring at once and adding voices into the mix will make it look like I am lagging trying to respond. I have no idea what the underlying condition is, but I consider this problem to be called "misophonia". I think it is about not being able to filter sounds well.

Thankfully I'm not regularly in an environment that force me to wear noise cancelling headphones.

Sometimes I believe this was caused by my childhood bedroom being soundproofed, but I still went to noisy public school so who knows.

izzydata··on Trump's State Department Could Spend $400M on 'Armored' Teslas
I don't think it is worth considering the practicalities of this grift meant to prop up falling Tesla sales.
izzydata··on Google Pixel 4a's old firmware is gone, trapping users on buggy battery update
First they have to wait for the maximum number of people to buy new phones.
izzydata··on Should we use AI and LLMs for Christian apologetics? (2024)
This is starting to remind me of the discourse around the made up mathmatics in Isaac Asimov's Foundation called psychohistory. People are starting to have near religious like beliefs for and against large language models because of its very difficult to comprehend nature.

It is not artificial intelligence and it is not generating truth or any such human concept. It is still just math.
