ixacto··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Less carbs. Study for GRE every day until I take it. No reddit. No procrastination. Make my GF smile every day.
ixacto··on Ask HN: How would your life change if Facebook/Twitter disappeared?
It would not change at all, I don't use them...
ixacto··on Ask HN: Who hires mathematicians?
My friend who did a math BS + partial masters from a large state agricultural university got a job at a company similar to this http://www.tricore.org/. understanding statistics and working with VBA in excel were important, moreso than programming which looked like the easy part. There were a couple other people with PHD in math who also work there.
ixacto··on Show HN: Tax plan impact calculator
I'm thinking about it in deducting state and local tax return. I pay $10000 in income tax. Some one in CA pays $10000 - $10000 deduction = $0 goes to the federal government if I am not mistaken. This is what I am talking about not the total contribution from each state.

If you are tired of paying state tax WA/TX/FL all have large liberal cities that have a good amount of STEM jobs...

ixacto··on Show HN: Tax plan impact calculator
Eliminating state and local taxes was a long time coming. Why should the no-tax states subsidize the bloated bureaucracy of CA/NY? It would be quite amazing if CA got rid of state income taxes though.
ixacto··on Silicon Valley Is Sneaking Models into This Year’s Holiday Parties
This is pathetic. Either don't hire women to be there or just hire a bunch of strippers. I say this as someone who is irritated by both sexism and political correctness run amok.
ixacto··on Regarding the NiceHash security breach
Nicehash is a bitcoin mining hash reseller. You could download their client and mine whatever cryptocoin was most profitable (ETH/BTC/LTC...) and get paid in bitcoin. Actually quite easy to use.

But they just got hacked for $52million...

ixacto··on Expensify sent images with personal data to Mechanical Turkers
Airbnb employees not happy with my comment I guess, but it's true. I don't want to have to give you my passport before I can go stay somewhere that I already booked like 6 months ago.
ixacto··on Facebook’s New Captcha Test: 'Upload a Clear Photo of Your Face'
Haha I wonder what they would do if you photoshop yourself into a dprk passport. These systems are a joke.
ixacto··on Expensify sent images with personal data to Mechanical Turkers
It is rather easy to photoshop and scan a passport. All you would have to do is get a random scan of a passport from your desired country, import the desired photo, print it and scan it a couple times and you have a new id as far as Airbnb is concerned. I highly doubt the outsourced workers checking it would care. There were quite a few driver license templates and passport template on demonoid a few years back...
ixacto··on Expensify sent images with personal data to Mechanical Turkers
Yup. The surprise request for passport/id is exactly what caused me to delete my Airbnb account and cancel the booking that I had already made without the request for passport/Id.

Airbnb you don’t get to pull this kind of unethical shit.

ixacto··on When Unpaid Student Loan Bills Mean You Can No Longer Work
You can get out of 11/12 grade in Washington state. Community college is really what hs should be though. http://www.k12.wa.us/SecondaryEducation/CareerCollegeReadine...
ixacto··on Older Americans who live in RVs and drive from one low-wage job to another
Pensions, 401(k)s, and most saving for retirement are not necessary. Just Roth IRA and compound interest.

All one needs to do is save an extra $450/mo after tax starting at age 22, put that into Vanguard VFIAX or similar for the next 40 years. That will give you a few million at retirement...tax free assuming the market continues to act how it has acted for the last 50 years. Combine it with social security and retirement will be manageable for most. Spend the rest of your salary on hookers/blow or iPhone game microtransactions, it doesn't matter.

The problem is the lack of financial education and ethic in the population.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What are some common traps that smart people fall into?
Thinking you can beat the market. Trying to trade individual stocks. Thinking you can make a genuinely new SASS product that noone has ever thought of before.
ixacto··on US Court Grants ISPs and Search Engine Blockade of Sci-Hub
This is not going to do anything. Libgen.io or https://libgen.pw/ if scihub is down.
ixacto··on 71% of Americans between 17 and 24 can’t meet the minimum criteria for service
Annd logging is about 3 times as likely to kill you than the military. https://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/03/15/dying-for-...

Also there are many, many jobs in the military that do not go anywhere near combat.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What do you want to see most in the next iteration of the Macbook Pro?
I have the 2015 model, and basically the same. (1) No touchbar. (2) intel GPU on the 15inch models. I don't like switching gpu. (2) True 4k display with wide color like the 4k imac. (3) Fanless if possible. The fan went out on my current MBP and if thing is going to last me until 2022 hopefully the next one will have less moving parts.
ixacto··on With a $1k Price, Apple’s iPhone Crosses a Threshold
Realistically you can just wait like 3-5 months until the price goes down a bit. Got this 128gb iPhone 7 (free unlock from att) for $570 + $10 otterbox deal from amazon + $3 screen protector + sprint 1 year "free" service for $4/mo. So that's 631$ for an iPhone and a year of service..

These phones really aren't that expensive if you look for a deal.

ixacto··on Ask HN: How do you find industry research internship?
Try amazon maybe, https://amazon.jobs/en/teams/phd-internship?base_query=&loc_....
ixacto··on Should I be worried about the EquiFax data breach, what should I do about it?
The r/personalfinance thread advised to put a 90 day fraud alert on your credit report. If you do this for 1 credit company, they have to tell the others. Here is TransUnion's form to put a fraud alert on your account. https://fraud.transunion.com/fa/fraudAlert/landingPage.jsp
ixacto··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2017 – Show and tell
Reminds me of https://twitter.com/botus?lang=en hah, good idea. Wonder if anyone has tried this for cryptocurrency markets?
ixacto··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2017 – Show and tell
Which exchanges are you using if you don't mind my asking? I have some btc that I mined ages ago and want to do something interesting with it..
ixacto··on Thanks to Venmo, We Now All Know How Cheap Our Friends Are
This is not a good idea. I don't want some company like venmo/paypal/brantree/visa looking datamining every last cent and transaction that I spend. Who knows who they could sell the data to or if they get hacked. Just use cash and tell the server what you ordered. They will give you an individual check, with totals on it. If theres >10 people yes you might need to pay 10% extra fee but that's better than subsidizing someone's 3 $15 cocktails, $30 steak, $10 dessert.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What are scientifically valid ways maximize my life expectancy?
Yes it does. Heres a start. https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-eating-...
ixacto··on Ask HN: Tax lawyer referal for founder stock questions
I'm very interested to see how this works out.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Building an MVP without a designer in 2017?
Yes. I did this for my last client, much easier.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Why shouldn't I leave Google?
It is a great workspace. Probably the best you will ever be able to work at, if you value stability and having a paycheck. But thE goog employment contract is more like a cult or indentured servitude, and really gives you insight to what is going through their minds as far as their Human Resources.

So give it to them right back, and don't lick the corporate boots. I'd work hard (or at least look like it) because they pay you well, but that's it. Every day you should be thinking about your next venture or startup, once you have something mvp profitable just quit and do that. You can find another sw job, startup, grad school or whatever but you cannot get your life back. Don't waste it on the safe option.

ixacto··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
So work for a company in expensive places, and live in a cheaper college town. You get the human contact, good food&bars, and it's not going to take your 50% income to live there. The median home price is $267,000 in Eugene, OR and $1,189,100 in SF.

37% home value per year @ $100k vs 8% for SF.

ixacto··on Introducing Surface Laptop
This is really disturbing. Pretty much the literal definition of "hook em wile they're young. I am starting to think we need a standard oil style breakup of google/amazon/fb.
ixacto··on Robinhood stock trading app confirms $110M raise at $1.3B valuation
This is gambling for almost all users, and yes I used robinhood for a couple trades. Use https://stockfuse.com and you won't actually lose your money.
