ixacto··on No hospital, just an emergency ‘department’. They’re popping up all over
Heck I went to the er for chest pains and what felt like an irregular heartbeat when I was 24. Had and ekg and everything. Was still around $300 (after jnsurance) even tho I was fine and it turned out to just be anxiety and dehydration.

There is no way I should be convinced by some fucking insurance company that something like this would be better seen in urgent care. What about the 0.1% of people where it actually is serious?

What if that allergy to peanuts your kid has is actually life threatening? You want the most comprehensive care available at the time available ASAP.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What ergonomic solutions are you using?
-MS Ergo 4000 for the last 5 years -Ergo monitor stand -Anker vertical mouse
ixacto··on This is the United States’ third biggest housing boom in the modern era
Owning raw realestate requres management, like any other business. but there are REIT. I'd much, much rather have 5 million in a vanguard REIT than Seattle/SF realestate...
ixacto··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
Windows 10 LTSB is really close. Then M$ decides to put candy crap + windows 10 home on the surface PRO. This puppy has great hardware but windows 10 feels like what some MS advertising exec wants everyone to use, not an actual os.
ixacto··on https://photos.app.goo.gl/fCnqs3RkoefuJZEF6
https://photos.app.goo.gl/fCnqs3RkoefuJZEF6 Look at that. Microsoft is trying to use a dark pattern to get the user to switch back to edge. Then I get a popup on a ms knowledge base article about edge.

This is annoying.

ixacto··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
Amazon search and non amazonbasics products are approaching garbage-level. How about half a page of advertising to buy some Chinese knockoff of a product that will break in a month.

My mom wanted some new lighting Apple headphones (earpods). Good luck finding actual Apple products on there.

I bought them from B&H instead. No tax + free faster shipping.

ixacto··on America’s Student Debt Machine
The trades e.g. electrician/plumber advertise apprenticeships all the time in the USA. They get paid + education which starts around $16/hr. If only some of the large tech companies would start adopting the same model.
ixacto··on Housing Costs Reduce the Return to Education
Yes housing is not in accorandce with the construction costs. Essentially you have inflated bureaucracy and artificial supply constraints & zoning (NIMBY) trying to keep the housing prices up.

Houses are just fine in Boise, ID or Albany, NY but so much cheaper than the coasts. This is really frustrating, and I don't see a politicly workable solution. So spend 50% on rent or move to Idaho...

None of this is even considering that we may be able to substantially lower construction costs with prefabricated/3d printed homes/economies of scale.

ixacto··on Subscription Hell
Subscriptions for everything. Ugh. What if we want all of our money to be disposable for what we want to spend it on, not what it is earmarked for by some large tech company...
ixacto··on 96-Year-Old Secretary Quietly Amasses Fortune, Then Donates $8.2M
Put $70k into VFIAX for 40 years. That will get you $2,061,991.75 at retirement @7% interest. Maybe a little more or less but this is inflation adjusted. I’d say if you are planning a normal to frugal retirement that is all you really need to invest.
ixacto··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Seattle is trying hard to catch up. 10.1% sales tax + just under 50% liquor tax.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What would you do with $100K cash?
Put it all into VFIAX if you intend to hold onto it. Then forget about it for 20 years.
ixacto··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
Bullshit. It is 100% advantage for the employee. Another employee and myself got laid off with 2 days notice from my former employer when they decided they were going to try to use less people. This is really annoying since I now am working as a temp for 6mo until I'm hired at another company and have to pay $400/mo out of pocket for insurance. This is in the biotech industry not the tech industry, maybe things are better there.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Will a MOOC certificate impress entry level Python employers?
Agreed. Having both the intro to programming MOOC down and a GitHub is really the way to go. This way if you apply to somewhere where the primary business is not programming you will have something to show HR and also something to show whomever is interviewing you.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
I am currently using the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with 16gb ram and a 250gb ssd. I have had to have the screen replaced for the lamination unsticking, and the fan replaced since it was starting to sound like a trash compactor.

Apart from that these are decent laptops, I'd recommend the macbook air though which is what I had before, the screen is about the same for normal use (excluding photo editing) and it is much cheaper. Use either of these with a good 4kp60 monitor/mouse/kb and you're set. Get a desktop box with a couple 1080ti if you need to do number crunching and set it up in the corner..

ixacto··on Ask HN: Why did you choose to have children?
Just hang out with people that have kids. Better yet bring the people with kids dinner or something, they will like the change of pace especially with young children. I will probably end up doing this myself, as I have significant anxiety and depression which made having kids a no-go.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What is your one tech prediction for 2018?
The median home price in Seattle proper passes $1million. SF median home price passes $2million. Microsoft/google busses start to get rocks thrown at them, hire private security escorts.
ixacto··on Swedish consumers can now get affordable 10gbit internet
I can't figure out what to do with my 100/100megabit connection. 4k youtube is nice, but that's about it.
ixacto··on Ask HN: I have £100k to spend. How can I use it to increase my quality of life
I would save enough to be financially independant. That gives you true freedom, then you don't even have to work. But it would also take about £500k GBP to give you 20k/yr for the rest of your life. This might take another 5-10 years, so do a fun vacation somewhere. Then you are set forever.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What do you wear to work?
Plaid shirt + black tshirt + dark pants/dark jeans[1] + clean fancy boots[0].

ixacto··on How and Why Athletes Go Broke (2009)
Suboptimal to say the least. https://investor.vanguard.com/mutual-funds/low-cost

With Vanguard/Fidelity/Schuab you can make only 45k/yr over your whole career, put the $5500 into an IRA in VFIAX/VOO starting at age 22, and have an retirement income of $58k/yr (not including social security) when you retire. This approximately 1.1-1.5 million in retirement is enough savings IMO, and allows you to pursue whatever career you want, e.g. nonprofit/teaching/part-time with much less anxiety than a traditional pension or more active investment like a restaurant.

Maxing out an IRA is only a 12.2% pre-tax savings rate for someone with a $45k/yr income. This is not difficult at all, however it is important that it starts in the early 20s.

ixacto··on How and Why Athletes Go Broke (2009)
This is generalizing people of different backgrounds' knowledge of securities. There are plenty of middle/upper class people who buy into idiotic mutual funds with a 3% front load fee. Wtf? Heck, many employers still offer absolute garbage funds in their 401k.

I wholeheartedly agree that major league sports should provide financial management skills, however the same should also be provided at large corporations.

ixacto··on Cryptocurrencies Come to Campus
I have also seen that Acorns and the roboadvisors seem to be popular with the younger demographic.
ixacto··on Cryptocurrencies Come to Campus
They are interested in it due to the pretty charts and slick interface of coinbase and robinhood. Many of the young adults and teens do not understand the concept of compound interest at all. They think stock picking and market timing can actually work for them. All they see is $300 -> $10000 or something. Making 8%/yr is not nearly as interesting.

IMO Fidelity/Vanguard need to figure out a better marketing campaign. Right now it is targeted to east-coast retiring boomers.

ixacto··on What I learned from watching my iPad's slow death
This. I repurposed a dell t3500 with a xeon x5650 (https://ark.intel.com/products/47922/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5...) GTX1060 6gb and samsung evo ssd, and the thing is still quite fast running ubuntu Mate and windows 10 LTSB.

The only real obstacle is the lack of NVME support. SATA3 is a bit of an upgrade bottleneck on these old systems, but even software development on this box was just fine with a fast ssd.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What are the better countries to immigrate for software developers?
Canada has a culture that is much like the USA, but without the somewhat nonfunctional healthcare and much better merit-based immigration. They want you if you are peaceful and can contribute to their economy/culture. Victoria and Vancouver are both beautiful cities that have tech happening, but also have a decent climate. There are a decent amount of tech meet ups in both.

Salaries are decently lower than the USA though. Taxes can also be slightly higher, but with the new income tax budget that passed the United States taxes should be at about the level of California tech salary taxes.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Best way/resources to learn Excel?
Excel couses on EdX are good if you are interested in Excel pivot & BI features.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Is commercial desktop software dead?
Yup. Try getting something like solidworks running in the browser. JavaScript is not there yet by far.
ixacto··on FCC Chairman Ajit Pai canceled his appearance at CES because of death threats
Death threats are Very convenient for him. Makes him look persecuted while he sells out to comcast.

Judging by the number of fake net neutrality comments submitted, I bet my deceased grandfather called in a couple death threats too.

ixacto··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
4k display and a standing desk is where it's at.
