ixacto··on Every thought about personal finance I've ever had, as concisely as possible
Best strategy with a >10yr timeline is 100% S&P 500 in a free or low cost index fund combined with minimizing taxable income and backdoor ira if applicable.

Then Just about anyone can retire with >=1.5MM and be doing ok. Of course double this number if you are in VHCOL but otherwise it’ll work just about anywhere.

ixacto··on Ask HN: How much money do you have?
Only $186135.22 at 32/m/techland #poverty right?. Going to check back in 5years after the startup exit ;).
ixacto··on LA: Ambulance crews to not transport patients with little chance of survival
Because I don't trust the federal and state governments to act in my best interests. This is not too say that some are acting in the best interests of the people as I am sure some in government do mean well, but not to blindly trust that the government knows best about our public helath.

China/Vietnam have stopped covid, that's great but you can't exercise many of the freedoms that are allowed here. Imagine if someone tried to fly a baby Xi balloon in China, or even practice a religion without fearing persecution or death? Or even mention tiananmen square massacre or the death toll from the Great Leap Forward...

That is still going on and yet we are looking to China style lockdowns as a model of how to deal with Covid.

ixacto··on Over 73% of U.S. Adults Overweight or Obese
There are a few things that are going on here which could be supporting raising obesity rates:

-The Farm Bill and USA Sugar Program, which is a bipartisan issue but which shouldn't exist in the first place https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Sugar_Program

-Increasing use of social media and sedentary lifestyles. When you are just inside on your phone all the time this is NOT healthy.

-This obesity problem is probably going to kill more people than COVID and the opioid epidemic, but noone wants to talk about it as it directly threatens various established interests.

ixacto··on Over 73% of U.S. Adults Overweight or Obese
This chart from the CDC shows obesity prevalence from 1999 to 2018. It's a very good indication of where we are going as a nation bmi-wise.

ixacto··on Can a software engineer on H1B make money from GitHub Sponsors?
Upvote, but also what are the most sponsored types of projects? I'd like to make a few bucks extra hacking away.

Right now I'm working on random webapps in node, nothing too special.

ixacto··on LA: Ambulance crews to not transport patients with little chance of survival
More people will die from covid. But the principals of free speech and assembly should not be sacrificed for something that will be and mostly gone in 6-9months. Yes people have died and that is horrible, but a dictatorship like china is not the answer. Tbh I'm more afraid of the governments authoritarianism than covid.

*Disclaimer: yes I wear a mask indoors in public places and outdoors when not able to be 6 feet from everyone. No I don't wear a mask when walking alone outside, that is stupid and just shows how much our messaging on covid sucked even with the middle and upper classes.

ixacto··on Ask HN: If agelessness was genetically possible, wouldn't it have evolved?
It hasn't been selected for in humans, but that doesn't mean it's a genetic problem. There are however ageless vertebrates including turtles and salamanders.

Also there was a 507 year old clam discovered off the coast of Iceland. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S00310...

ixacto··on AirPods Max
Have taken the blessed path on Ubuntu 20.04LTS with a Lenovo workstation, however on updating the bootloader spontaneously decided to Bork itself. Could possibly try and fix it, however this is not something I want to mess with right now so currently using WSL v2 and Docker on Windows 10 and not having any problems. It is nice to be able to add 2/4/8gb of storage and 128gb of ram for dirt cheap, something that is not possible with a mac though.

ixacto··on Colombia is considering legalizing its cocaine industry
Totally agree but you are not a politician up for re-election in AZ/PA/MI or some purplish state. Suddenly you get rid of jobs that does not look good in these areas especially if you are a state level politician.

The same would happen if we get rid of commercial insurance companies which I'm also in favor of. All those admin staff, drug sales, insurance coders would be out of work and politicians would have to explain what happened.

ixacto··on Reddit Claims 52M Daily Users, Revealing a Key Figure for Social-Media Platforms
They have been auto-creating an account if you go to reddit.com on an android phone logged into a google account. Not sure if this is intentional or not.
ixacto··on Colombia is considering legalizing its cocaine industry
In my option it [Drug Prohibition] is entirely futile and held in place by various special interests including the government and pharmaceutical companies. It would be much simpler if we allowed for the sale of every chemical that is non-weaponizeable to everyone.

This would remove a lot of people form the criminal justice system and get rid of the need for the DEA. Only problem is that the DEA is a job creator though.

ixacto··on Amazon reportedly has Pinkerton agents surveil workers who try to form unions
We also had the ludlow massacre where the local militia and mine company guards attacked the miners with machine guns (pre nfa...) and dynamite https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludlow_Massacre.
ixacto··on Ask HN: I have $1M cash in my bank. How can I stretch it so I can retire?
Go find yourself a fee-only financial planner (CFP) that is a fiduciary. Directly ask them this and leave if the answer is anything else than "yes".

Also most advice here is going to be wrong or not applicable to your specific situation.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Should We Move Again?
Feel free to bring your business the United States! You would need to bring at least 1.8MMUSD for tho for a visa.

There are many states NY/CT/MA that already have lots of finance-related companies located there and good availability of lawyers.

There is also the Delaware Court of Chancery which is very good for business. https://courts.delaware.gov/chancery/

Also if you are looking for webdev hmu I'm looking.

ixacto··on The AMA is a tax-exempt hedge fund and licensing corporation
It is more a billing negotiation tactic between your health insurance company and the medical facility that you are seeing.

The insurance company negotiates the bill to a rate of $x for in network $y for out of network. So no they are not expecting you to pay that $6000.

I got a bill from my therapist for $430 for a 30min appointment, insurance paid $186 with zero copay, it just had to go through the magical cost-reducing power of an insurance company.

This system is wierd.

ixacto··on Google moves into Venmo, banks’ territory with checking accounts
This is not a good idea. What happens when google decides to disable your account because of.. reasons?

This happened earlier this year, was locked out for around an hour when I did something one of their security bots must not have liked.

ixacto··on US Navy destroyer shoots down an ICBM in milestone test
We already saw the US navy get dominated by unconventional warfare in the Millennium Challenge

"After the war game was restarted, its participants were forced to follow a script drafted to ensure a Blue Force victory. Among other rules imposed by this script, Red Force was ordered to turn on their anti-aircraft radar in order for them to be destroyed, and was not allowed to shoot down any of the aircraft bringing Blue Force troops ashore." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002

So yeah lots of the big ships might not be that useful in a present-day conflict if they can get destroyed by suicide-attack boats. Of course that puts the whole need for the amount of military funding/pork into question and that makes the military-industrial-congressional complex very nervous.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Is 16GB enough for Software Engineering (M1 13“ MacBook Pro)?
Currently using 18.1GB/64GB of ram with Rstudio, Docker, Discord, Many chrome windows open. Was just about to hit the "buy" button yesterday but being that ram-constrained in the era of electron-based apps seems like it's pushing it.
ixacto··on The global fertility rate is falling
C) We will develop anti-aging treatments due to increased funding of SENS and similar projects. Combine that with a universal basic income and robots and you get a much better picture of the future.

Edit: we are also not taking into account artificial gestation methods that may be developed in the next 100 years. In 2120 it may seem as barbaric as child labor and other 19th century atrocities to actually have a woman carry through a pregnancy, not to say that religious fundamentalists will want to continue the practice.

ixacto··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
Failed mine as hireright did not understand the difference between an area of emphasis and major. Had to talk to boss and hr. It was a mess.
ixacto··on 37-Year-Old Mom Spent Seven Days Online as an 11-Year-Old Girl
Cool be offended. But I would still disagree with your attempted rebuttal of my original points.

a) Not just Young or attractive women will get attention. There are a lot of older/non conventionally attractive women that use online dating too. Who knows since we are thinking in hypotheticals would you deny them male attention if they wanted it? What about a younger man who wants to meet older/bbw/non conventionally-attractive women?Tinder et al. are great for that, and I would not dissuade anyone for trying to find someone they are sexually attracted to.

b) The point that I was making, and that you have created a straw man argument out of....is that yes women have it easy in regards to receiving validation and invitation to dates/encounters/sex in the form of likes and messages on online dating services. There may be undesirables/creeps out there but it is trivial to unmatched so it would arguably be easier than swanking with bad attention in in the real world.

ixacto··on Apple, Google criticised for Saudi Absher app that tracks women
Here is the Saudi abasher web-app hosted on the interior ministry. https://www.moi.gov.sa/wps/portal/Home/Home/!ut/p/z1/04_iUlD...

Feel free to hack this website. Because this kind of behavior is not acceptable, this is a literal totalitarian nightmare.

ixacto··on Samsung Unveils 15.6-Inch Ultra-HD OLED Display for Laptops
Then switch to ARM already. I’ve been using an iPad Pro (1st gen) 9.7” for most things including google docs/web/email and it’s plenty fast. And it still has 46% battery after 3 days. For development I have a 8core Xeon box with 64gb of ram to fall back on or remote into.
ixacto··on Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard
Eww so they have a landing page when you want to cancel. Pretty slimy. If it’s too annoying just give them a chargeback, heck do it the next month if they don’t stop. That will fit the attention of at least their payment processor.
ixacto··on Ask HN: How many people do you know that use Linux and don't work in tech?
Lots of nontechnical people at google used Linux. Of course it was supported by IT, so less hw problems.

I also made a few Debian box like 15 years ago for a nonprofit I interned with. Seemed to work just fine for basic web stuff.

ixacto··on Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes
Didn't know that, also FUCK AMAZON from now on. But what are they going to do? Some sort of civil suit is not that big of a deal if you have your assets appropriately sheltered.

Although this makes me hate Jeff Bezos just a little bit more. Hope he loses it all in the divorce battle.

ixacto··on SpaceX to lay off 10% of Workforce
Lol it's not that big a deal if you lose a job when you have around 12months living expenses saved up. So that goes twords living expenses, then you get unemployment at 60% of income. People need to move on, and stop being so emotionally invested in their work.

You are most likely an at-will employee. You or the employer can terminate the relationship immediately giving any reason or no reason. Just have money saved up and don't be afraid to quit without notice to something better if you need to.
