ixacto··on California's New Math War
“It sort of forces everyone into one slow lane,” he said. “The ones who are capable are never going to be able to move fast enough.” -TFA

We don’t need slow/fast lanes but we need less bs in schools and to push STEM and particularly the Math as much as we did in the cold-war era to complete with China/Russia.

I do empathize with those who had math problems, I did too but had to use EdX and MIT OLL to teach myself Precalc/Calc/Linear Algebra.

There is all the education you need through graduate level math and stats available for free on the internet.

Edit: Khan academy and professor Leonard are also great resources!

ixacto··on FDA authorizes Pfizer vaccine for kids age 12 to 15
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine does not use mRNA and it is currently available in the United States.

There were adult women under the age of 50 who had some medical problems with it but, it is much better than getting COVID. If the mRNA vaccine are the obstacle in getting vaccinated I’d go with the J&J.

(Note: I am not a medical doctor and this is not medical advice)

ixacto··on Ask HN: What passive income investments exist to supplement your salary?
Most states have eviction moratoriums until 6/30 right now due to the pandemic.
ixacto··on Facebook Should Halt Instagram Kids Plan, Attorneys General Say
While it might not make sense to give children smartphones, they will find a way to see what they want.

This is preferable to sheltering them until they go to college where it is all on display for obvious reasons.

One of my fondest childhood memories was figuring out how to get past the high school’s filtering software so we could get hotornot/MySpace/deviant art available.

Just remembered hotornot, kinda crowd sourced child/teen body-image shaming but it did help everyone develop a thick skin unlike today when parents try and micromanage their kids lives.

ixacto··on Facebook Should Halt Instagram Kids Plan, Attorneys General Say
Yes I think this is more a play for Facebook mindshare with parents.
ixacto··on Facebook Should Halt Instagram Kids Plan, Attorneys General Say
It’s totally possible that pedophiles and abuses are using tiktok and Instagram to groom children, but most of the time it’s someone that the child knows that actually does the abuse:

“ A common myth is that child sexual abuse is perpetrated by strangers and pedophiles. But most people who sexually abuse children are our friends, partners, family members, and community members. About 93 percent of children who are victims of sexual abuse know their abuseriii. Less than 10 percent of sexually abused children are abused by a stranger.” https://www.ywca.org/wp-content/uploads/WWV-CSA-Fact-Sheet-F...

So I’d not freak out too much if your kid searches for something really weird, because we all did that as kids.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Should one diversify their stock portfolio
COVID freaked out the stock market last year. Then it rebounded due to tech companies bring such a large part of the index. Residential real estate did great dispute COVID in some markets.
ixacto··on “What Happens to Stocks and Cryptocurrencies When the Fed Stops Raining Money?
It doesn’t matter when it comes down, next year or 4 years from now. The market will come down for stocks and cryptocurrencies.

These are not sound investments for retail investors and it will cause many people that could have been using their money to increase financial stability and fund their retirement and/or emergency savings accounts to lose that property.

It speaks to the incompetence of our society in handling money that only 39% of Americans could afford to pay for an unexpected $1000 expense. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bankrate.com/banking/saving...

ixacto··on Evidence from leaked account data on how elites use offshore banking [pdf]
WA/TX/FL do not have an income tax and still pay more to the Federal Government than they receive.

IMO the SALT deduction is a horrible thing and allows state governments to become way too bloated.

ixacto··on Evidence from leaked account data on how elites use offshore banking [pdf]
Why should people in states that do not have an income tax have to effectively subsidize the SALT tax deduction?

Maybe it will make ca/ny think twice about having such high tax rates…

ixacto··on Why People Feel Like Victims
CRT teaching and COVID-lockdown related psychosis is going to lead to more adolescent health crises e.g. Columbines than we can imagine.

This is going to cause issues with a whole generation of kids until we realize the damage it’s done and ban it.

ixacto··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
That is without employer subsidy or tax credits?

We can purchase insurance from state (ACA state) or federal exchange (non-Aca state), and also from the companies themselves. The cost will be either $0-1500+ Per month per person, yeah it varies a bit. Many employers will charge about $50-150 per month and subsidize the rest.

There are also high deductible plans that they are paying though, but they usually have a $3000-6000+ deductible per person, these are not good if you want to have kids or have a family history of chronic illness.

In my opinion the whole system is a huge inconsistent mess though. They will literally send you bills for hundreds of dollars (got a $350 therapist bill a few months ago) and I had to call them up an very politely tell them that yes I do have insurance with the credit card history to prove I’ve been paying the premiums, and to very politely fuck off.

The bill went away.

ixacto··on An open letter to Jason and David
Exactly. I find it this ironic it is the same phrase that Bush used, and now the left has taken it over too https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_are_either_with_us,_or_a....

Really this whole controversy is asking for their political views to be the only ones discussed at work, what happens when someone from a more conservative background or country voices their views?

IMO really don’t want to talk politics at work it will just lead to problems. Also SJW is not a protected class.

ixacto··on Soaring lumber prices add to the cost of a new home
I'd make SF and all the large costal cities look like this https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a4/Hong_Kon.... That is enough density to have a condo cost 100k instead of 500k. Sure there will be a decent amount of taxes and HOA fees, but that would turn housing into a utility rather than a government subsidy for the middle class. Also you could wire fibre to each unit and solve the internet speed problem for these NIMBYified cities.
ixacto··on Soaring lumber prices add to the cost of a new home
This is the real problem IMO. We need more dense condos like Chicago, where the median condo price is 268k versus other large cities where it is almost double that.

This is just people being taking advantage of their housing...investment/tax shelter/savings plan that is bidding the price up.

Look at something like this zero red flags that I can see for $219k that is much cheaper than in most other large cities, housing doesn't have to be this expensive. https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/1706-W-Huron-St-60622/unit...

ixacto··on Ask HN: What car do you drive?
Early 2000s Toyota Camry, with <100,000 miles. I’m hoping it will be the last internal combustion vehicle that I own.
ixacto··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
This app wants you to sign in and change the color scheme before using. This is not good UX, it should be more like https://www.firecalc.com/ where you just type some numbers and hit "go". Not everything needs a google/fb/clever login.
ixacto··on Basecamp Didn't Just Ban Politics at Work, It Made an Executive Power Grab
Well based on this article I sure wouldn’t want to work at Vice, sounds like a toxic nightmare.

Basecamp on the other hand sounds great, having introduced a 10% profit sharing and removing a bunch of superfluous programs.

You can fight your culture war once you’re done working for the day, just do your damn job. That applies to both left and right IMO.

ixacto··on Covid-19: Highest death rates seen in countries with most overweight populations
Finding other ways to exercise can be difficult when it is cold and rainy out. I'm a month past having my 2nd dose of Moderna vaccine, covid is not really an issue anymore apart from people still being afraid of it/antivaxxers.
ixacto··on Covid-19: Highest death rates seen in countries with most overweight populations
Being overweight/obese will kill more people than COVID, and will still be killing people when COVID is eradicated.

But the government is not doing a ban of HFCS by executive order.

ixacto··on New Google Fi Cell plans – unlimited data for $30
This is much better than it was before, but Visible is $25 w/ party pay and includes unlimited everything, although tethering is capped at 10mbit.
ixacto··on The real reason to end the death penalty
For some people prison is 3 meals a day and a place to sleep, paid with your tax dollars.
ixacto··on The real reason to end the death penalty
The death penalty should not be abolished because to some criminals in society the threat of force is the only thing they respect.
ixacto··on Initial preview of GUI app support for the Windows Subsystem for Linux
Yes Microsoft does have an incentive to make a POSIX dev env available on their OS and also make the experience of using it not suck.

I'm curious as to why they didn't just purchase https://x410.dev/ and integrate that into WSLv2 as it has hidpi support already too. Also If Microsoft is able to get GPU compute working with native performance I would absolutely switch back from M1 mac.

ixacto··on Looking for alternative ways to find first 50 users
Have you tried reaching out to therapists individually to sell them on the apps utility? That might be a better marketing strategy as they would be getting users for you directly.

Having it as a way to facilitate meetings in a specific therapy niche maybe where clients don’t want to/can’t drive to their meetings.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Significance of “8” or “88” in cryptocurrency/NFTs
Google owns 8.8.8.8.
ixacto··on Onboarding with an M1
32” 4k on a m1 mini at a scaled resolution of 2560x1440 looks great.
ixacto··on The Washington state legislature has voted to end limits on municipal broadband
If you don’t want to see homeless and/or needles go to most of the east side including Bellevue.

Median home sale price is 1.15MM though so a little more expensive.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What’s Your Blogging Setup?
GitHub pages and GitHub. Super minimal, don’t need to install anything, and easy to export the whole repo.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
Why is this dismissed as poor reasoning? The only part that I might take issue with is the 8hrs/day as this might be a bit much depending on the project.
